Terence Young, Guy Hamilton and Lewis Gilbert all had directed a number of films long before they did Bond.
Peter Hunt was a first timer (promoted from editor/second unit director).
John Glen was a first timer (promoted from editor/second unit director).
Martin Campbell had a mix of television and movie directing credits.
Roger Spottiswoode had a mix of television and movie directing credits. You could make the case some of his TV movie directing credits (And the Band Played On, Hiroshima) had more prestige than some of his movie directing credits.
Michael Apted was an established film director (though you could argue he was in a career slump when he got the job to direct The World Is Not Enough).
Lee Tamahori had a few film director credits.
Marc Forster had seven film directing credits before Quantum.
Unless the new one is only for the 2nd class plebes who run out to the theatre and put $'s in coffers while the original will be snobbishly reserved for films that the Academy folks feel deserve recognition and have been ignored by the masses.
I guess we'll have to see how this plays. I'm pretty sure Bond will get into this new category down the line.
And now the FF films will have a legitimate award to go after... Their next film could be the Oscar winning, "Most Popular Film"...
This is why some award shows have almost lost all credibility and relevancy-- they try too hard to have their cake and eat it too.
if who "cared"? Do you think anyone at EoN or MGM or Sony didn't "care" about SP? At the very least, they're a business whose job is to try and sell the very best product. And, like any business, sometimes they've nailed their product-- sometimes they fail.
But it is the good businesses that learn from mistakes and come back stronger-- just like Bond's longevity-- for every YOLT, they try OHMSS; OHMSS was seen as a downturn, so Connery comes back for a light-hearted turn; TMWTGG was seen as supremely sub-par, and TSWLM saves the franchise's bacon; MR's too OTT and FYEO comes next; LTK was a bomb, GE is a hit; DAD makes MR look believable, CR re-boots everything...
EoN has built more successes than failures, and generally learns from losses to come back stronger. If they didn't "care" about their product, in all its forms (from the gun barrel on), this series could have died when Connery left the franchise the first, or second, time....
Perfection.
I’m speaking solely on whether they cared about the gunbarrel, not the actual film. I have no doubt whether they cared for the final film result. In this case, I don’t blame EON, MGM, or Sony for the gunbarrel, but Daniel Kleinman, Sam Mendes, and Daniel Craig
And you blame Daniel Craig for his gunbarrel sequence(s)??? You do realize he is directed to do what he does, right? Then, in editing, the director chooses the one he wants?
And this comes from a man who loves Craig, but I haven't been a fan of his gunbarrels. My fave is Timothy Dalton (and we could have had his as being a poor man's Bob Simmons if John Glen and team didn't choose the right one)...
He just cant seem to nail the gunbarrel like every other Bond. I think his best look and pose was in QOS while his walk was good in SP, apart from the swinging arm. The SF gunbarrel was awful.
The director will ask the actor to hop like Bob Simmons (TD's never used one); to swing the gun hand, to twirl, or god knows what-- then the DIRECTOR chooses the final cut ... This is not a SC choice or DC choice as a FINAL CUT...
Duh duh DUH!
We then discover that the events of the last few films were orchestrated by her because she was angry that Bond bedded Fields so soon after her "death".
She’s the co-author of all Bond’s pain.
Ooh even deadlier lol.
We need an update soon. Hopefully things are on track.
Unlike this psychotic thread.
"Round two, Mr. Bond!"
"Ah, Hinx, nice to see you again."
I read somewhere on the internet today - the Oscar statue for the best popular film will have the head of Iron Man because Marvel will be winning it every year.
