I am no Brosnan-era fan, admittedly. I wished I coulda loved this guy more since he really does seem like a decent person, and someone who really wanted to do Bond well.

Without permission, I am going to speak for @Shardlake (and if I crossed a line, he can spank me for it (another, adult-thread, will open at that point. Pics included)).

Reading the McQuarrie interview, he does contradict himself just a little. He talks about the change of tone, or actor, and transitional period where we assume he would bring something new that fits inside the character we know and love.

But, in contradiction, almost, he talks about Connery being the gold-standard ("but of course" he is), and how he did like Brozzer.

Why mention an era he will never be able emulate (Connery), or another era that no one is asking to go back to (Brosnan (apart from his solid fan-base on site))? You want to be a part of a transitional period for something different just to try and bring us back to... Connery?... Brosnan?...

Someone like me, and possibly Shardlake, can't speak of Connery and Brosnan in the same sentence. So, admittedly, the backs may be against the wall here. In one actor, we had the cool, natural suave of the 60s-- the Golden Era-- and the other, well... not the Golden Era... and one where the actor was more avatar than character...

In one interview this guy, McQuarrie, takes two steps forward (wanting to be involved in a 007 transitional period), but citing the past (two steps back, 'cause really, he will never be able to re-create the Connery era), and the recent past, that could, COULD influence his vision (Brosnan-Bond; to people like me, this was not fun at all; we've taken four steps back).

The elements of the interview could, COULD, be a warning to some that this guy is wishy-washy in the world of Bond.

As I said to one of our great members earlier this evening: if Craig's last film was between McQuarrie and Fukunaga? Hands down I go with Fukunaga.

'Mission: Impossible' director Christopher McQuarrie reveals the Bond movie he'd want to make
    https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/christopher-mcquarrie-reveals-bond-movie-hed-want-make-exclusive-135754188.html

Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie has responded to calls for him to helm a James Bond film, revealing the type of 007 adventure he’d want to make.

“I think that, as with anybody, I would be most excited to be there [making a Bond film] for a transition,” McQuarrie told Yahoo Movies UK.

“There are key moments within the series where you see either a change in era, a change in Bond, or a change in tone, I would like to be there for something like that.”

[...]McQuarrie says that if he did make Bond 26, he’d want to add a bit of levity hinting that he’d welcome a return to the lighter tone of the Brosnan Bond era.

“I think Daniel Craig is a fantastic Bond,” explains McQuarrie, “but I’d love to see a Bond who enjoys being Bond, I miss that.”

“My first Bond was Connery, he was the gold standard. I’m actually a fan of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond. He had these little moments, these little grace notes where he was really having fun with the character, that were quite surprising, I really enjoyed that. But I like them all.”

[...]Bond, like Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, has endured on screen, with both spies enjoying multiple sequels, and McQuarrie thinks the appeal of Bond lies in his timelessness.

“It’s that Bond lives out of time. Each one of those movies self-contain,” he mused. “There’s very little reference from one movie to another. It doesn’t matter who the enemy is, if it’s a Cold War… He’s so adaptable, he changes with the times.

“And when it’s time for a new Bond, you just get a new one. You don’t acknowledge the history, I think that’s great. Bond is an attitude, and it’s been great to see that attitude live on.”

McQuarrie is saying everything I's want to hear from a potential director – "a Bond who enjoys being Bond" (we really need that!), enjoying Pierce's Bond, and little reference from one movie to the other. Sign him now!

What the F is that supposed to mean, exactly? If McQuarrie's opinions of DC are based on tabloid BS, then, no, he has no business being behind the lens on any Bond film. It shows how uneducated he is.

I think he refers to this:
    Daniel-Craig-as-James-Bond-in-Skyfall.jpg

    Versus this:

    Goldfinger-james-bond-6182703-1197-716-1024x613.jpg

To put it short; a Bond who enjoys himself more than a Bond haunted by past events.

    Fleming's Bond versus Connery's Bond

If that’s the case then Connery’s Bond is vastly superior to the source material.

Same. Collectively though I believe Craig’s films are a lot stronger. But I think both are great Bonds.

One of the things that I like about fukunaga is that he didn't choose a favorite bond or
or film which makes him a better contender for bond 26. I highly doubt that EON Would choose him because he has already made a spy film he wanted to make.

A Bond who enjoys himself. As in Craig's Bond is miserable 98% of the time while the others enjoy themselves on and off duty. No way one could misinterpret that... Unless you're biased.

I think by conceding he likes Craig as Bond, he is also taking a dig at him and his "slashing wrists" comments. At least, I saw that as the underlying message. DC seems miserable playing Bond and thus we have a miserable Bond.

I don't think either are true.

There are plenty of instances in which the DC Bond is very much indeed enjoying himself (in that perfect sort of arrogant way)...

With all due respect, I cannot fathom how you came to this conclusion; he is clearly about the character of Bond and the tone of the Craig era films , not how Daniel feels about playing the role.

There are no digs at Craig, not even implied.

Agreed. He’s talking about how each actor plays the character. You can see this when he talks about the way Brosnan played Bond: “He had these little moments, these little grace notes where he was really having fun with the character, that were quite surprising, I really enjoyed that.” Clearly he’s speaking only about each actor’s on-screen performance; not any off-the-cuff remarks they may have made outside of their films.
  • Hopefully Craig takes de Armas with him to Bond 25.

Unfortunately she's too young for Craig.

No, you're just taking an offense that someone might've accidentally taken a jab at Craig's Bond, so you're interpreting it the way you want it to seem like, stirring things up to suit your narrative.

Heaven forbid someone gives some constructive criticism to the way things are handled... or mishandled.
  • I'm glad McQuarrie threw a bone to Brosnan's Bond. I grew up with him as Bond and think he's underrated IMO. But I'll leave it at that.

Regardless, he's off the mark even in his interpretation. That's not exactly the Bond we have, as I've pointed out.

Not to pile on, but of the 35, few are Bond having fun being Bond in the spirit of Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan.
This isn’t a shot at Craig, even as his Bond has been written, he’s one of the best. There’s just a desire to , even if somewhat, return to the old ways.

Agree entirely. Anyone who says they like the Brosnan era sets alarm bells ringing for me. Having said that, he is never going to direct a Brosnan Bond film and he is a better director arguably (certainly of action) than any of the Brosnan era directors. So he would not be the worst choice. I don't see EON wanting MI's sloppy seconds though.

    Yes
  • I’m surprised there are people who are terrified of getting another Brosnan Bond movie. Considering that during the Craig era we got the likes of QOS and SP then another Brosnan movie could only be considered a step up rather than a step down. Some folks seem to be under the deluded impression that Craig is batting 4/4. He’s not. And 2/4 is not a percentage to be proud of.

I think Brosnan is the man with 2/4 percentage - GE and TND being his best Bond films. If Bond 25 hits a bullseye, Craig will be 4/5 percentage - now that is good.

Stop over analyzing guys, he just wants a more self aware suave bond as opposed to the blunt instrument we have now.
It's not surprising his comments are being overanalyzed, he committed two sins for people around here: criticizing Craig and praising the Brozza. But his opinion is as valid as anyone else's.
I’m surprised there are people who are terrified of getting another Brosnan Bond movie. Considering that during the Craig era we got the likes of QOS and SP then another Brosnan movie could only be considered a step up rather than a step down. Some folks seem to be under the deluded impression that Craig is batting 4/4. He’s not. And 2/4 is not a percentage to be proud of.
I actually don't think QOS is a bad movie (just a highly forgettable one), but indeed his batting average is hardly great. With his movies it's one step forward, two steps back, that's why I'm predicting/expecting B25 to be great.

Exactly. That's as obvious as it gets.
