Yes, they both were. The film's major positive points go to the pre-title sequence.

Is this the Bond 25 news/discussion thread or just another one hijacked by the same Spectre-haters who bag out the movie at any opportunity in every other thread?

Seriously, we get it that you don't like the movie, but some of us really did, and we come to this forum looking for news and discussion of Bond 25. Can we stick to the point please?!

Don't blame us, blame those who made the movie.

I still enjoy Spectre. Not as excellent as Skyfall, but I did enjoy it. Not amazingly mindblowingly GREAT like Casino Royale was, but it was good Bond film. I simply don't share the negative feelings so many have about it; I really don't. Some people seem deeply unhappy, yes. I'm satisfied with it overall and am looking forward to the next one.

I honestly don't get the harping on about SP, especially when it comes to the brother stuff, which I have never minded and don't get the fuss. Of all the things about the movie, that's what gets people going.

The only major thing about the film that really takes me out of it all is the torture scene. If Bond was shown to stumble about and have temporary fatigue during the shootout as he and Madeleine exit the compound, it'd been one of the best parts of the Craig era, easily.

I love SP, and over time I've grown to appreciate it more than SF. It doesn't have a Tennyson-like scene that completely washes emotion over me, but none of the other Bond films do either, and I'm fine with that. SP is a far more interesting film to me in comparison to what came before, from almost every stand point.

I like SF too, as I like all the Craig era, but it is most certainly overrated in many ways, largely resting on Silva. I think he may be the weakest Craig villain for me, as Le Chiffre was a great Fleming addition done beautifully and Blofeld astounds and fascinates me every time I watch SP, where I'm always picking up new things about him from Christoph's nuanced performance. And Greene is interesting to me for his hair-trigger sociopathy and the facade of eco-protector he wears, aspects of his character that culminate to create a very satisfying and frightening villain, because men like him work with impunity against us every day.

Silva lacks the same impact as the others for me, I'm afraid. I don't think I was ever through the roof with him, even. I can enjoy him, but he's certainly not on the level of most of the Craig era, or to the level of the villains of old, as many reviews liked to proclaim at the time. His debut was interesting to watch unfold, but I think the one-shot monologue he delivers makes him peak on arrival, and it's only downhill from there. He could've been rescued if the film would've played up the doppelgänger angle between him and Bond more, men connected through their respective relationships with M. We lack a lot of supporting information on just what M and Silva's dynamic was like beyond some throwaway exposition of how they drifted apart as allies, and nothing more. Getting more background, even through brief flashback/s or simply more meat would've made Silva someone to understand. With what we get in SF, I hear his pain and anger, but never feel it.

I think we're all looking forward to the next one. What we're not looking forward to, however is a 3 to 4 years gap just to get a meh movie.

My frustration with SP stems from EoN having all the time in the world to craft a great script and then because of time wasting and negligence, they had to do a rush job and were still crafting their shooting script well into the December of which filming was to start; and as a result I found the film to be incredibly disappointing. That's just unacceptable and hope a more serious approach and focus can go into the preproduction process, primarily the bloody script.

Have to disagree there, actually thought the car chase was one of the better bits of the film, glad to see it didn't go the crash bang wallop way of a Hamilton car chase and actually had some humour to it.

The SP car chase lacked any real danger. The two drivers where not engaged. The director's focus on that sequence was to intro the Franz O./Bond foster brother angle not to present a tense escape by Bond.

The chase started off clever with nothing working and ended ok but the middle was meh to me.

The issue is (and others may disagree) is the producers lost their way in terms of what to "borrow" from. Now before people start blaming Babs or Michael no this issue stemmed from the 70's (hey Star Wars just came out let's do a film like that called Moonraker) now I get it the producers want to make money and that is perfectly fine but I wonder if in the 70's if in stead of looking toward jaws and Star Wars if they instead looked toward films like the French connection how different and better the film series might be. The latest issue of not knowing who to copy comes with Spectre who is stealing from Marvel whole heartidly and this is an issue because had they instead look to Taken or hell even the Bourne legacy we would of gotten a much better and more interesting situation

As it stands Spectre is far from the worse film in the franchise (even the whole brother thing doesn't bother me as I feel like it's now a well traveled road with Goldenye showing "brothers in arms" and Skyfall.... Yeah silva keeps calling M mother and referring to her as if she is his and bond's mother and we are really gonna be ok with that and not Oberhauser uhm sure fine let's call one execution of the same idea brilliant and the other poor) but it's not the best either but there is a new Jason Bourne film out so hopefully bond 25 borrows from that more so then the next marvel film

This is right. Is it a watchable and entertaining scene? Yes, in a mild sense. Could it have been better? Yes. It's poor directing. You have a car chase through Rome and instead of creating an amazing action scene, you take a phone call in the middle of it to 'drive the story.' It's the first time we're getting a potential full gadget Bond car and it could've been cool, but instead they go for humor, some of it lame. You've just established your bad ass henchmen, who also has a cool car, and he does... nothing.

I'm really looking forward to the next Bond film, so I can finally erase the disappointment with this latest 'effort' from my mind once and for all. It will most likely end up being my least watched Bond film in time, eclipsing those other works of genius, TWINE & AVTAK.

Let's please have some real news sooner rather than later, so I can finish the grieving process and start to look forward to better days ahead.

For me @tanaka123, sadly it is. Much glossier than those others definitely, and more polished, but ultimately actually more 'empty' for me. At least those other two films have some liveliness and spark to them, thanks to the humour sprinkled throughout (I can't believe I'm defending TWINE).

So we could have had another Bond v Villain car chase, smashing into things, firing missiles, guns etc at each other and Bond escaping anyway? They could have just re-done the chase from DAD, because that was exciting wasn't it?! I like the fact they did something different which payed of with a great visual gag. I dare say the majority will disagree but, hey ho, we all like different things :-)

@Lancaster007, but trying something "new" is pointless if it's dull and lacks excitement. The SP car chase may be unique in that they don't smash into one another or use a ton of gadgets or really cause any destruction, but that's irrelevant when you consider just how boring it comes across on screen. There are a few beautiful shots contained within, but other than that, it's mind-blowing how much money and time went into shooting such a dialed down "car chase."

Well stated. And me too. I know all this SP ramblings is not so much B25 speculation but it is some of us lamenting over SP hoping for a fresh approach with the next film.

Didn't some people 'in the know' claim there would be a new James Bond actor announced this month?

Well, it's 30th June, and it's the afternoon in the UK. EON better hurry up with the press conference or the day will be over.

All these rumors have been just that: rumors. So much for that 007 Magazine site that seemed pretty confident on their "sources," which turned out to be a whole lot of nothing, like they previously predicted. I fear we won't have any more concrete news about the franchise for at least a few more months.

Maybe that's why Boris has pulled out of the race to be the new Conservative leader.
Because he's the new James Bond. ;)

Well, they did put emphasis on the word "apparently" in their report, but they don't strike me as a magazine that posts any news without concrete facts.

They shouldn't have been so confident about it, then, especially after they spent months hammering home the fact that anything you hear outside of an official confirmation is completely false; seems their own reports turned out to be false, as well. No matter, though, I really haven't expected any news over the last few months, so I'm ready for even more waiting.

In my opinion, I think DAD > SP. At least DAD wasn't trying to be something it wasn't, and though it's cheesy, it's still a fun adventure with life -- something SP lacked. Maybe I'm biased because DAD was my first Bond film, but there's something nostalgic and "guilty pleasure" about it. People often complain about the invisible car, but I didn't think it was too outlandish (maybe at the time). Spectre is just simply a bad movie because it tried way too hard to be good, and fell flat on it's face; and it doesn't help given the whole pretentious attitude Mendes gives us; not to mention DAD is a simpler film, that usually makes sense at least. Meanwhile, Spectre plot, torture scene, aimbot, magical hacking, screaming with a gag in mouth...

    Anyways, back on topic.
