Which is a very different scenario than that of the post-"Die Another Day" period, where EON Productions basically urged Pierce Brosnan to resign, or to at least make him say "I'm done with it".

Brosnan really wanted to return after "Die Another Day", but EON more or less didn't want that to happen. With Craig it's the other way around. They desperately want Daniel Craig to return, but now the actor himself has the final say.

They didn't urge Pierce to resign. They were suffering creative fatigue and weren't sure where to go next. They didn't feel they could change gears while still keeping the same actor in the role so they had to let him go.

If I'm not mistaken, Barbara and Pierce were on a conf.call together in 2004, when Brosnan was at his house in Malibu. They extensively talked about it and at one moment there was an uncomfortable silence from Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Brosnan then said himself: "So....I guess you want me to leave then?". You are right that they weren't directly urging him to leave, but implicitly that was very much the case. A combination indeed of creative fatigue but also an uncomfortable moment where that fatigue was definitely broken by an understanding from both the producers and Brosnan that leaving the role could be good to usher in new inspiration and creativity.

And this is very much so different from the situation with Daniel Craig. They basically throw all the balls to executive producer and actor Daniel Craig. And with it they let all the creativity for Bond #25, how difficult that may be, at the moment depend on him. If he signs up for Bond #25, then EON believes there's still a lot to gain from Daniel Craig as James Bond as opposed to Brosnan. In a way, this situation is much more comparable to Roger Moore and Sean Connery. When their contracts were served out completely, "Cubby" or "UA" always showed interest to get them back.

It's a completely different kettle of fish with DC, though. No actor has been given carte blanche in the way Craig has and that is down to Barbara and her decision to switch things up post-Broz. Neither Connery nor Moore had creative control in the way Craig does, they both turned up, did their job and took the paycheck. Cubby was constantly testing during the latter Roger years and Rog was content playing hardball over his fee. Cubby could've easily told Rog to stick and gone out on a limb, much like Babs did with DC, but he didn't because from a business perspective he had a product that was ticking along and making money - that's no different to the post-DAD scenario.

This whole thing boils down to Barbara doing her own thing, something she clearly wasn't confident in doing back in '95, the shadow of her father still looming large and MGW still a constant presence. Post '02 (Which, lest we forget was an interesting time for cinema in general) she decided it was her time to make a break and put her own stamp on things. Pierce was caught in the cross-fire. It could've been anyone.

Absolutely true. That is indeed the biggest difference between on one hand Moree/Connery and on the other hand Craig.

The amount of creative freedom, including script revisions by Connery for 'Goldfinger', were always denied to him. Craig however........it seems Barbara is turning him into some kind of 'Tom Cruise'. She loves him.....especially from a creative point of view.

So another question comes up now:

If Daniel Craig quits as Bond actor, could he still return as co-producer? Giving valuable advise to his future successor?

  • Daniel Craig is still the first choice of Eon Productions to play James Bond, a long-time crew member on the 007 films TOLD THE BBC.

“We would love Daniel to return as James Bond,” Callum McDougall said today on the BBC’s Today program.

Craig, 48, “absolutely, without question” is the top choice of Eon co-bosses Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, McDougall said.

“I know they’re hoping for him to come back.”

McDougall, has been a production manager on the film series since 1995’s GoldenEye. He added the title of co-producer for 2002’s Die Another Day and executive producer starting with 2006’s Casino Royale. (In films, executive producer is a secondary producer title, while on television it’s the title for the top producer or producers.)

Craig has had the Bond role for the last four 007 films.

Connery's feelings on the script of Goldfinger were listened to, actually,@Gustav_Graves. He was part of the reason Maibaum was brought back in at a later stage to fix some issues.

But that's neither here nor there, as we don't know how much influence Dan has had on the script, at least to my knowledge, so a lot of judgement there can't be imposed.

As for the question, of course Dan isn't going to stay on as a co-producer. When he's done in front of the camera, I think he's also done behind it. He's got his own things he'll want to do post Bond, and I think if he stayed on to produce he'd feel like he was hogging the stage and getting in the way of the new guy in the role, who would deserve his shot uncontested by a previous Bond actor working behind the scenes.

I agree, once Dan is finished with acting as Bond,he will break from the whole thing..butt hopefully we will still see him at 007 get-togethers ala Sir Rog and Tim...

This isn't really news. It was obvious from other interviews that MGW and BB are desperate to have Craig back. Which is a weak hand from a negotiation standpoint. Maybe Craig is waiting so long so that he strengthens his negotiation standpoint - i.e. the more desperate they are the better deal for him will result.

I don't think James Bond will return until 2019 at the earliest. Then after a long wait, a dark haired handsome Irish guy will step forth from the shadows and we will think it's 1995 all over again.

@Mendes4Lyfe have you been watching the second series of Poldark? What do you make of it, and of Turner in it?

Craig being 'the first choice' is the most useless piece of information I've ever heard, to quote Sir Rog in TMWTGG.

The series itself is very prototypical for a costume drama. Not bad, just not all that inspiring or unique. I like it because it is filmed in my county and I recognise quite a few of the landscapes.

Aidan Turner on the other hand does a stellar job. I think between this and 'And then There Were None' he shows us why he is perfect for Bond, and more importantly what his Bond would be like.

    Do you watch/enjoy the show?

Yeah, I'm enjoying it. Although it's not as good as the first series, I'm not finding it as engaging. The trial scene had no suspense and then there should have been more tension when he went out smuggling. He has the looks for Bond but I would have to screentest him if I was the producer.

@Mendes4Lyfe, you think EON will hire Brosnan again? Interesting theory. I guess if he dyed his hair black as you said, he could do it.

I like the idea of Mendes not returning for Bond 25 myself. Newman, especially.

    Me too.

Perhaps we should kill both Mendes and Newman, and throw their corpses overboard? :|

Nah ...too drastic. Mendes impressed me with with SF and Newman impressed me with SP so I prefer to simply drag them behind the boat then send them home with hot cocoa and a t-shirt.

    Now Logan ...hmmm? :-?

    Jesus.

I wouldn't say Newman impressed me but IMO the SP score was superior to his SF effort.

I'm still convinced that he won the Oscar for SF because people associated the score with Adele's song.

    He didn't win the Oscar.

Weird. In my mind I thought he'd won.

But what's to negotiate though? It's not like Craig is all about the money; and if it's not about that then it would be over creative directives and I'm sure all parties will be lobbying for something that won't turn out to be a disaster of a joke.

Interesting interview with Marc Forster discussing QoS and the writer's strike. He also seems to acknowledge that while the film was received pretty well upon release, it's been liked even more over the last eight years:

@RC7, that he does. The photo seems to be from his current work as the "face" of Speak-Marin watches.

He's got more style and presence than ever before, and it really makes you wonder what he could do as an older Bond. At least we have The November Man, regardless of if it nets any sequels or not.

I'm sure @0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 and @bondjames would agree. I just love how good-looking these 60+ years old like Neeson, Brosnan, Gibson, Denzel and Dalton still look.

Forget Hiddlewhatever, Idris, Jamie Whatshisname, etc etc. When Craig goes....Brosnan must come back!!!!!!!!! Pierce looks DAMN good there.

And if not Pierce, then Tim.

@DaltonCraig007, Neeson has a Richard Burton-esque way about him in his older age. He's got a great presence in everything he plays and effectively brings dangerous characters alive convincingly.

He's never screamed Bond to me, but it'd be interesting to see him appear in the films in some capacity. I think he'd make for a great M.
I must say, in those pics of Dalton and Barbara Broccoli from the other day- he looks lean and mean. Darken his hair, grow it out a bit, and he'd look like a slightly older version of his old LIVING DAYLIGHTS self. His features, though a bit more defined now, really haven't changed that much in 30 years.
If Bond were to be recast for B25 I would fully support the idea of Tim or Pierce returning for the next 3 films.
