You're right it's not absurd but Campbell has been so adamant about not returning that seems such a long shot.

I'd rather he didn't return. Let him preserve his legacy and let the series look towards new talent instead of churning out the same ol' usual suspects.

Funny, I feel the same way about Craig.

And sometimes I do too ...but always depends on whom the replacement might be for me.

I've heard you're a big Turner advocate but on my side I haven't had any candidates jump out at me.

Less choice this side of the recent presidential election.

The longer this drags on, the more adamant I am that they clean house completely and come back fresh. So anything past 2018 and I'm all for a complete new start.

Exactly. Why tamper with a legacy?

I think Fiennes has the option of one more film.

But I agree. The only thing I truly want to keep is M's office...

I'd like you all to keep in mind that Tarantino's idea for a Bond film was Casino Royale set in the '50s, shot in black and white, starring a chainsmoking, pill-popping James Bond played by an older Brosnan.

I wouldn't write off his approach to any Bond film immediately, it would just be.. different. Even the producers tried to steal Christoph Waltz from him.

But going forward, I was floored by Arrival and Sicario and thus count the days for Denis Villeneuve to be attached to a Bond film.
I'm also in the camp that think Nolan would have a great approach, as a Bond film is something he's probably been loosely planning in the back of his mind for decades, like Inception. I even made the case that Inception, moderately tweaked albeit, would have been a great Bond plot with the villains stealing dreams.

    Villeneuve is my first choice.

My first choice too... after Blade Runner 2049 he will direct a smaller scale movie set to be released in 2018... he would still have time to direct a November 2019 Bond 25. He's a fan of the series, he expressed interest in directing a Bond film, he's a very good director, very talented and good at directing actors... bring back Deakins (he actually works with Villeneuve since Sicario I think) and Arnold. With Daniel Craig playing Bond, for one last time. Maybe they can start with Blofeld on trial, with the plot following on from there. Or maybe they should let "that envious voyeur" :) in prison and bring back a Bond driven mission formula with less Proust allusions and more gritty action. Maybe it's also time for a female main villain (Tilda Swinton type).

I had forgotten he was a fan. Very good to hear. Doubt EoN would hire him ...I'm sure they are going to talk Mendes into returning because they have no clue it didn't work.

I'm angry and I've lost confidence in EoN after SP.

    This would be a dream.

@mcdonbb Not to worry, mate. Mendes will never direct another Bond film. He's made it clear that he's done for good.

I loved Spectre, I really loved Spectre. I believe it's a fantastic, magniloquent, quintessential Bond movie. I really love the concept behind the story, that if you wanna drive into the future you have to accept and embrace your past. But, after four movies "deconstructing the icon" I would like a really fresh new chapter, very different from the last two movies. Not as kinetic as QoS but still not as retro as Spectre.

True, but look at Forster and Mendes. Neither of them managed to surpass Campbell's Casino Royale. And GoldenEye was also better than Spottiswoode, Apted and Tamahori's efforts.

The trouble with Campbell is that he sets the bar so high that no following director can match him.

What that says to me is EoN need to do a better job at actually being producers when it comes to hiring directors and to have better QC with the scripts. For starters they need to scrap the, only British and Commonwealth directors are eligible to direct Bond movies shtick; it's archaic and asinine. Campbell isn't even a great director. He's mediocre at best but he excels at understanding the world of Bond and clearly has a great vision to realise that world. The good news is he's not the only director in the world with such capabilities and he's nowhere near the best. EoN now just have to put in the work and be wise with their selection going forward.
  • Campbell just turned 73. For someone who inherently has a huge amount of energy, he could absolutely do Bond 25. People run marathons and write Star Wars scores in their mid to late 70s and beyond. Depending on how many years they take between films—and that is the big unknown here as no one can really say how many years that will be—there exists a very real possibility not only for Campbell to do another Bond film, but to be the one to introduce our next James Bond.

Agree with this.Ridley Scott is nearly 80 and he makes huge scale films every year.I dont see why Campbell couldnt do it again. But my guess is that hes had enough of Bond and maybe he doesnt want to be known as the '' Bond reboot guy they turn to every decade ''.

  • I don't think he would have that mindset at all—unless there was some history with him being slighted and repeatedly begged back, but that isn't the case. Campbell's biggest successes have been with Bond. You'd think he would really want to go for one more.

I wouldn't mind a style of film like SP or the comic Hammerhead... just want a good thrilling story.

Agree! Campbell may want to do a victory lap with Craig, and vice versa. I'll bet Campbell has some things to say about an aging spy. This really is the perfect time for a more faithful adaptation of YOLT. Call it The Garden of Death (to avoid a third "S" film).

Hear, hear! I've always said to bring back Campbell. If Bond 25 is Craig's swansong, then we must have Campbell to send Craig out on a real high note. Unfortunately, I won't be getting my hopes up though. :)

Mendes would be wonderful too if we want to find out that Bond has a sister who is Blofeld's lover, who is resurrecting Spectre 2.0 and sits at the head of the table with her and Blofeld's love child on her lap instead of the puss. Gold standard.

As long as Waltz comes back I'll be happy. We don't want Blofeld to be recast in the vein of Pleasance to Savalas to Charles Gray. Complete misuse of the character.

I haven't seen Waltz doing hand-to-hand combat in any film, though. He's only the vocal menace but not physicality. I was excited about his casting at first, but ended up being disappointed after seeing his performance. He was wasted.

The problem with Campbell directing Craig's last is EON's seems unable to make 2 consecutive films that are hits with the critics and general audience. SP (and I think the film is really fun) was nowhere to the level of SF in popularity, same with QOS after CR, TND after GE, MR after TSWLM, and so on. I'm not saying EON will never succeed, but right now, as of 2016, they haven't done this since the Connery days. So, are we ready to sacrifice a brilliant debut film for Bond #7 for a high-note ending to the Craig era? I'm pretty sure most people outside the hardcore fan base will tell you that each debut outing is better than the last film of the previous film, but I don't think EON has it in them right now to follow-up a debut outing straight after a CR-level send off for Craig by Campbell. Unless they either get Campbell to also direct Bond 26, or as @doubleoego said, they strip these boring limitations and hire a non-Commonwealth director - Villeneuve would have no problem delivering the goods straight after Campbell.
