I think some of the locations are almost incidental - they don't linger enough on the context. But overall I like QoS. It gets a lot of stick that it doesn't really deserve.

I even think it benefited from the writers strike. It lacks the stodgy dialogue of a lot of recent Bonds. It just feels stripped back and lean.

I definitely need to see it again. It's been nearly a year. But as of now I think it's one of the worst Bond films (alongside TWINE), so I disagree as I feel it deserves a lot of the criticism it gets.

When Bond takes influence on Bourne for the reboot yet makes a very classy Bond film (CR), they knock the ball out of the park. When they (IMO) clearly intend to follow Bourne with a flat-out wall-to-wall actionner (QOS vs Bourne Ultimatum), Bond beats Bourne at his own game by quite a margin. Don't get me wrong, I love both characters, but Bourne is more of a badass that basicaly spends the entire film punching and shooting people, while in QOS Bond does the same but he still got that Bond style (Tosca scene beats every scene in all 3 Bourne films) and there are many scenes in QOS that gives Bond more depth. Also Barry's soundtrack is brilliant, and the cinematography is a lot more lush than Bourne's.

Actually, Bourne hardly fires a gun to shoot people.

Hmm you're right but he does beat up a lot of people. ;)

I find the criticisms of the Bourne trilogy unconvincing. Bourne is not Bond and Bond is not Bourne. It's possible to appreciate both without criticising one or the other.

I never criticized Bourne, I'm just saying the Bourne trilogy is more action and thriller orientated, while the Craig films, while having taking notes on the grittiness and believability of the action scenes, are still larger than life and classy. Bourne films are more rugged.

    Gloriously so.

Bourne beats up people better than anyone else IMHO.

Rama from the Raid films beats people up better than about anyone as well.

If you want a high rate kill, watch the 4th Rambo film. I have no idea how many people Stallone machine gunned at the end, but it seemed like quite a big number. :P

There's also the airport scene in Expendables 2.

Those are gun battles, not fistfights.

I know :) I was thinking of films with a high body count.

Ah, I see. Good ole Arnie kills about three million people in Commando, a masterpiece of 80's action cinema.

Surely Keanu's Neo holds the record for single handedly thrashing a bunch of Smiths in Matrix Reloaded:

I love QOS. Obviously the lack of a decent henchman is the major fly in the ointment plus the title song is a bit meh but minor quibbles aside it makes a good companion piece to the classic Casino Royale. I just wish we'd seen Bond roughing up Youssef. I can't stand that character.

For me, QOS is similar to LTK. In that it took me quite a few viewings to appreciate both films. ;)

That seems to be the general consensus, but I'm actually the opposite. When I first saw QOS in theaters I was scratching my head at all the negative attention it was getting. Saw it a few more times over the years, enjoyed it, but slowly started enjoying it less and less until now I have to really search for things to like about it. I still find much to appreciate, as I've mentioned time and time again, but in 2010 (or so) I probably would have ranked it just outside my Top 10 favorite Bond films.

    No longer.

Heavens no. That would've gone against all that Bond had grown into by the end of QoS.

Kind of interesting: both Greene and Sanchez fight Bond with a sharp object, both have a lair that gets blown up, both threaten a president/president wannabe. Also, in both movies, Bond is on his own and in both movies a villain gets captured and escapes.

    I'd hardly call the eco-hotel a "lair." ;)

I'd never noticed those similarities between the film before. Ludovico :)

QOS has a very anti climactic end to it.A hotel goes up in flames....and thats it.Its like as if LTK's action climax ended with Sanchez drug lab went up in flames and we didnt get the awesome truck chase.

    That's a valid criticism.

For me, though, I liked that Bond basically took everyone out rather swiftly--he's a trained assassin. That's his job.

It is certainly in keeping with the quickness of the action that preceded it. With that said, however, it's interesting that it took him so long to dispatch an ostensibly untrained Greene (I suppose the flurry of axe attacks may have had something to do with it).

Rama....oh poetically brutal Rama. The way this man just eliminates people is enough to make one weep from overwhelming joy.

That's the rule of cinema. The final confrontation between the hero and the villain always has to be a long, tense and even affair... nobody cares if it makes any sense or not. The classic is when the villain has done no fighting and given no signs of being a warrior through out the film, but then suddenly pulls up a sword and happens to be an agile expert in sword fighting... (:| Its the same with computer games. The final 'boss' always has to be the most challenging one.

I've also never liked how Blofeld personally goes after Bond on skies in OHMSS. It seems a bit silly, out of character... Its so much more satisfying in Spy for example, when Moore quickly shoots the guy in the balls, and we're done! ;)
