Even the mighty Sony EON empire will fret about the bottom line and getting a job done for the lowest cost in the quickest time and the DTP photo manipulation way is the modern quick fix way to do things.
Even a decent photo shoot with attendant cast and minions will cost £1000's anyway so they're not then going to chuck it all away because an extremely talented visionary illustrator artist has a work of art to offer instead. It doesn't happen very often let's put it like that. If course there are 1000's of professional illustrators who could run rings around the disappointing fare offered like the newest teaser. Even when some would even happily offer work for free in such a project the realism of photographs rules all the way now. Like I say, I don't like it either but that's the way it is until trends and styles change and illustrative skill is rewarded and recognised once more.
Compare the CR teaser to this and the gulf is embarrassing. One is dramatic, atmospheric and gives you a flavour of the film. The other is just a bloke.
How did anyone even pitch this as a concept?
'Here's what I've come up with - brace yourselves - Bond holding a gun standing in front of a grey screen!! What do you think?'
And rather than just telling him to get out everyone has looked at each other and said 'Yeah that really works for me.'
Pathetic.
The DAD teaser is fantastic. The hot gun melting into the ice is just like a Chopping book cover. Yes the font looks a bit stupid today but then so does TB's 'L007k Up, L007k Down, L007k Out!' It doesn't prevent either of them from being awesome. In any event I don't think it's the lettering anyone has a problem with its the lacklustre concept of Bond just standing there.
Mind you are we being over harsh? Is it any worse than the TLD, LTK and GE teasers? Well yes IMO but it's difficult to articulate why. They are all just Bond with a gun but somehow seem so much more interesting. Is it just nostalgia talking? Perhaps I should cut some slack to EON for signing off on this?
Nah bugger it - it's shite!
I'm with you there. Appalling - particularly the way Halle Berry got practically equal billing like it was a buddy movie.
Often as not, it's too easy for them to maintain the easy, play it safe mindset. despite seeking professional advice. Many are so entrenched in what they KNOW they want they get given exactly that (and what they deserve).
Some of the best work gets it's legs cut out from under it before even getting a chance. The problem is, every man woman and child will have a firm view about this kind of thing and will be more than happy to make sure their feelings are known about how they see something should be done. When I go to the dentist I'll trust his professional judgement and experience and just be damned happy the results don't hurt too much not stop him half way through and tell him how he should do it.
As is often the way, many will go to the trouble of hiring a guard dog and still bark themselves...
If not, then it deserves all the criticism it's getting for being boring, motionless & uncreative. The CR one is by far better, and as has been mentioned, really gives us a flavour for the movie's theme - one of the best ones they've done in recent years.
The exact one used by Sony is a custom version of Faux Occident based on Gotham. So not really no :P

Or there's one you have to pay for, which is close, called faux-occident

Yes naturally we are not slagging off any graphic artist out there who put this together as he is only doing what he is told. Poor guy probably has 100 better ideas and just has to hold his tongue as the corporate studio moron tells him what will play best with the public.
That'd be about right, that's how it usually goes.
Has there been an elimination vote for the best poster in the whole series thread yet? I can guess where CR and SP would end up!
After viewing some of these. The SP teaser doesn't look so bad.
Personally I like it anyway. The TWINE flame girl and QOS shadow are not the best imo.
I agree. The CR teaser was a lot classier.
I don't think either SP are dynamic enough to do this, however clever the tentacles bullet in the broken glass idea may seem. In fact, apart from CR, there's little redeeming features about many of them shown in your post @benny.
I've always liked AVTAK and MR principally because they're painted
I think the SP one is vying with the GE and TND ones for bottom place though. You may not like the TWINE or QOS ones but at least there is an artistic concept in there. Personally I don't like that particular OP one but at least some thought has gone into it.
I agree. I love that particular AVTAK one and used to have it on my wall - it harks back to the great YOLT volcano one.
No wall big enough to put it up though, really, although I might try to hang it somewhere!
Here, to make the comparison, the poster of Daniel Craig:
Casino Royale (2006)
Quantum Of Solace (2008)
SkyFall (2012)
SPECTRE (2015)
