It's horrible, isn't it? It's making me ill.

Yes, it's really nasty. The air quality index right now is at 219--"Very Unhealthy"--but was at 270 earlier today. I feel even worse for my relatives in Sacramento but hope the weekend will bring some improvement.

  • Forecast is for rain by Wednesday so maybe that'll knock the particles out of the sky. I'm thinking about going to a movie if I can be sure of the air conditioning...

Santa Barbara, dinner, visit and back in 36 hours.

I'm impressed you didn't hit monster traffic!

On the way down I did. 2 1/2 hours from San Jose to Gilroy!

I got caught in that stretch once, and it was certainly awful.
This year I tried to avoid traffic by taking a plane and train to San Diego. The plane to LA was delayed three times, the bus from LAX to Union Station refused to arrive for almost an hour, and the train to Oceanside left 40 minutes late thanks to a "clerical error." I finally made it Oceanside at 12:40 am. You just can't win.

Gift-wrrapping the Christmas presents, for me, while listening to some music (Jean-Michel Caradec, to be precise). Due to some mishap or other, they won't be as commplete as I wished for them to be (the slide I gave to a photo lab to be digitized have not come back on time, so my brother and sisters will receive them later), but at least, they'll receive the main things on time.

As for yesterday... Well, let's say I shouldn't have gone to Paris to get the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, and check my pull list at my comics store. Between the "Yellow Vests" demonstration Rue de Rivoli, which forced me to walk the whole of that street from Les Halles to the Place de la Concorde, to some problems with frost that stopped all trains in the evening, forcing me to take the last bus home in Versailles (after having to walk from one train staion to the other), it was a saturday I won't soon forget.

I had some old friends over last night to watch an assortment of Christmas-themed clips and short films:

    * "Blue Christmas," from Elvis Presley's '68 Comeback Special.
    * "I'm Grateful" by Mahalia Jackson, from a DVD of her Bell Telephone Hour appearances, 1957-62.
    * A Christmas Dream (1900) and The Conquest of the Pole (1912) by Georges Méliès.
    * The Mickey Mouse cartoons Mickey's Good Deed (1932) and On Ice (1935)
    * The Disney Silly Symphony cartoons Santa's Workshop (1932) and The Night Before Christmas (1933)
    * The Fleischer Brothers Popeye cartoon Seasin's Greetinks! (1933)
    * The Ted Eschbaugh cartoon The Snowman (1933)
    * The Tex Avery cartoon One Ham's Family (1943)
    * "The Blue Carbuncle," from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1984), starring Jeremy Brett.

Christmas fair in Windsor. Here I am in the dodgem car with the best number, looking forward to some Brosnan-style vehicular mayhem.

Today : groceries, storing my comics (here, I've just finished the latest issue of James Bond Origin), and a bit of writing to do. Tomorrow, movie (I'll try to do a double bill with Mary Poppins Returns and Aquaman) Monday : visit at the dentist (not really impatient for that, as you may realize).
