Casino Royale was such a great movie, that its successor was always on a hiding to nothing. Certainly I felt that way. But with time, as you said, I began to appreciate QoS - a film with different and contrasting levels of "greyness", in which Bond is a white knight.

I quite like that description. There's actually a lot of chess-like metaphors in the Bond series as a whole, when you think about it. The spy world Bond frequents is it's own chess board, with Bond a pawn of his government fighting on the front lines, a weaker force in the face of massive conspiracies like SPECTRE.

And of course at times M has been called "The Evil Queen of Numbers," White "The Pale King," and of course Bond has no doubt been teased endlessly for being a pawn, soldier, etc. of the "kindgom" or "realm." A lot of that is simply down to Bond being a celebrated staple character of an old imperial power in a series that welcomes the frequent symbolic usage of monarchical or royal sounding titles, but anyway...

On the SP discussion, for me it's like this:
Bond goes after Blofeld to stop him (and, if it works out that way, kill him). hence the destruction in Marocco. Bond is known to rile up his advisaries, that's why he said he was there to kill him.
Then in the MI6 building, Bond shoots, but he's seen the glass allready. It's just his frustration (and a homage to TWINE).
Finally, on the bridge, he's stopped Blofeld. He doesn't kill an unarmed man, he doesn't like killing in cold blood. Even though this guy has killed Oberhauser, even though they have this long-going connection. It's got nothing to do with Madeleine, he's acting like he's always done.

The drive-off isn't that special. It's another homage of Bond driving off with the girl, like he's ended with Tania in the gondola, domino under a B17, etc. etc. Even emphasized by the rebuilt (classic) DB5.

We won't see Swann again, their 'love' was as much a love story as Tania's

I think that the Bond film I have viewed most all-time is The World Is Not Enough. What I found so shocking is that in my most recent viewing, I noticed that after Bond fends off Elektra with his right hand (the one Zukovsky frees), he reaches up with his right hand to free his neck. In the subsequent frame, it shows his left hand being the one to unlock the neck restraint.

Ha, didn't notice that! will look for it. Brosnan's Bond does get left and right confused at times, he does too in GE while observing the yacht.

Oooh i didnt know that either....bad continuity then....i will check that out next time i view TWINE and GE....

I've watched the films so much that those goofs seem to pop up more frequently these days. A couple of weeks back, I noticed how Bond enters the tube to meet M in DAD, and as soon as he descends the steps and goes through the door, the camera cuts to where he's now standing, which is in a corner with no door in sight.

In other words, Bond entered a wormhole or portal of some sort.

So, we can all basically agree that Brosnan's Bond is not only a man with lightning fast hand reflexes, but he's also a skilled time traveler and "jumper?"

I'm also guilty of noticing more and more gaffes in the films of late.

They don't just apply to Brosnan's Bond (Martin Campbell mentions the change-of-hand when observing the yacht in the dvd commentary) but to a fair few of the others as well (night turning into dawn in the space of a second in LTK).

The most infamous gaffe? Probably the car stunt in DAF.

I just realized that Moore rode a sea vehicle (boat or watercraft) in all of his first four films. There were the boat chases in LALD, TMWTGG & MR (two in this one if you count the gondola) and Q's waterjet in TSWLM (you could even count the Lotus if you want but that was underwater).

Being on a boat in all respective outings is also true of:
Dalton - he parachutes on a boat (TLD) and is aboard for Wave Krest (LTK).
Brosnan - The Manticore (GE), the Stealth Boat (TND), the Q boat (TWINE), the boat to get on the Cuban clinic (DAD).
Craig - in Venice (CR), in Haiti (QOS), on the way to Silva's Island (SF) and on the thames (SP).

GOLDFINGER is the only Conners film where he isn't seen in a boat or water going vessel of some kind-

    DN- Boat to Crab Key
    FRWL- Escape from SPECTRE goons
    TB- Throughout
YOLT- Boat to the fishing village
    DAF- Cruise ship with Tiffany.

I've noticed that Benzes are quite prevalent in James Bond films as baddie's cars. In fact, Mercedes-Benz seems to be the vehicle of choice for the henchman. Usually top of the line S-Class as well.

GF, OHMSS & SP (Lucia) all feature black ones.

OHMSS & DAF feature silver 600 SEL Pullman limos for Blofeld. OP features a blue one used by Kamal. FYEO features a silver 280 SE (driven by Loque) and OP features a maroon 450 SEL (driven by Gobinda). Fatima drives an SL in NSNA. Elliot's goons drive two blue W126 S-classes (not sure which model) in TND.

The good guys drive them too. TMWTGG features a white 200 driven by Hip. Bond himself drives a 250SE (I think) in OP on the tracks, and he drives a rental S class in SF in Shanghai when pursuing Patrice.
    --

Rolls Royce also gets featured a lot in these films. FRWL GF, OHMSS, TMWTGG, AVTAK, LTK, TWINE, & SP all have them.

The babes tend to drive sporty Fords (normally Mustangs). Tilly, Tracy & Fiona all drive Stangs, and Jinx drives a T-Bird.

One of the shots in the Skyfall underwater ice fight is flipped horizonatlaly for no good reason. I remember this caused me great confusion in the theatre, with what a disaster of photographt and choreography. Mendes excels at the family drama, but not so much on the action.

    Two observations from SP.
The first is after the DB10 has ejected Bond by parachute. At 50.42 - 50.44 the chute looks no bigger than a large table cloth. Though I'm no expert on parachutes, it does appear rather small.
The second is during the Nine Eyes meeting in Tokyo. At 51.16 although blurred you can see that Australia is one of the members. Though at 51.30 via Tanners laptop we can see that Australia isn't one of the members of Nine Eyes. They are, Spain, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States.
So what are Australia doing there? Perhaps ASIO are so good that no-one noticed. Despite the place card.

Good spot Benny, although it's clear enough Australia isn't a member as there is no one sitting at the table wearing a large hat with corks hanging from it.

Or overacting and using words like. "Strewth." And, "Fair go cobber."
Despite this, I still find myself very much enjoying SP. My second favourite of the Craig films.

A shame too, as Mad Max and Bond could've teamed up to save the world.

I just found out the other day that Maud Adams actually appears in "three" Bond movies, if you count her tiny background cameo in AVTAK. I never knew she was in it.

I haven't had the chance to look myself, but she apparently appears when Bond and Chuck Lee are first walking and talking with one another. They say this is her behind them, in the tan jacket and black pants, holding hands with the man in a plaid shirt:
