I actually felt like Paloma had an updated Goodnight quality.

In some alternate universe, there's a cool scene in a future Craig Bond film where Bond visits the CIA headquarters in Langley and meets with Leiter and Paloma again.

That would be a laugh: a bit like that Kingsman movie where they visit the US equivalent. It would be quite funny to meet the American equivalents of M and Moneypenny (I guess if Gogol had a 'Rublevich' then the CIA head needs a 'Miss Buckycentz' or something :D ) - with his denim padded door to the stage right of her office or something :)

Yeah I think Blofeld stands up to repeated reimaginings; Scaramanga is interesting though. I think the film version is pretty iconic in a way (the gun itself is very recognisable) and yet the film isn't very good and doesn't really use him very well. So I'd almost like to see that version again, but in a film which is more about the greatest assassin in the world.

Once Roger Moore took over, Bond fans became divided. Heck, possibly before that even.

I think the greatest split I saw among fans was for Van Halen, when Sammy Hagar took over as the new frontman.

Listen, you're just, 1,000% right. Let's all please move on from this.

I thought I was making a spectacularly benign comment about how some fans like that moment, and some fans don't. How it tends to cause disagreement, from the above literal definition of the word "divisive".

I commented the other day (elsewhere) about how Bond fans were made special by really spectacularly talented people like Connery/Adam/Barry working on them and someone argued with it. It is incredible what fans will argue about.

I think it has something to do with how infrequently we get new content to talk about.

Like rats in a bucket, we begin to eat eachother.

I only had it pointed out to me last year I think: I never noticed! :D

Christopher Lee is good, but Scaramanga on the page feels like a much younger character than the way he plays him.

There's room to redo him (yes, I know some say Sanchez = Scaramanga). A younger, cockier Scaramanga. Oscar Isaac could play him perfectly.

I’m into a more faithful TMWTGG remake, though I agree with @mtm’s points on the film. Let the current film keep the iconic gun, but have another go at making a film of the book, why not.

I must admit I don't find him very interesting in the book. He's just a sort of cocky local gangster.

I found the book to be unmemorable. I’ll have to pay more attention on my next read through of the series. Just so hard to focus coming off of the firecracker of YOLT.

After rewatching the teaser for Project 007, it should be how they announce the film titles from now on.

I do want to see modernizing characters that have been mentioned before.

The problem with Ponsonby and May is not only are their roles unfortunately almost pointless, the roles they do play are incredibly outdated now.

Also, on the reuse of character names @NickTwentyTwo, do you not think that maybe it'd be better for the identity of the franchise as a whole to have different names? It seems like such a small thing, considering the continued reinvention of some characters, but to see lets say Dr. No appear again in the credits of a James Bond film would feel somewhat strange to me personally.

It's not true to Fleming's last line, but for Bond #7, I wouldn't mind an "introducing Goodnight" arc over several films where he marries her in the last film.

I agree that the following should be brought into the series or be modernized:

Blofeld, Goodnight, May, Tanaka and Trevelyan would be my top 5.

That’s how Tom Mankiewicz felt too. This is why he made Scaramanga in the film more of an analog to Bond. A gentleman assassin like Bond, but the big difference being he actually enjoys killing people. Bond hates Scaramanga because he sees a side of himself he recognizes and intensely dislikes. “I admit, killing you would be a pleasure”.

I think that’s the one aspect Mankiewicz was fascinated with the most which is why it’s the strongest part of that film, and everything else is kind of a mess.

It's a pretty compelling idea and I wouldn't mind a remake with that version of the character (ditch all the Solex stuff).

In fact I think he's the character who could make a good spinoff because he is so close to Bond and gives the audience the same sort of thrills, and yet is still different enough to not just be a clone.

I wouldn't mind having a someone as Scaramanga the way Safin "was" Dr. No. Don't take the specific character and name, but scatter in some allusions here and there and work off of the characterization. In one of the comic shorts, there is an Argentinian assassin who likes to duel people and is said to never miss. It's just a little thing, but it's a fun bit (sadly the rest of the story isn't great...).

I still maintain that they could do something cool with the TMWTGG novel opening for B26. "It's another nut who says he's James Bond. Even knows his code number. Says he wants to speak to M. personally." would be a good opening line for a new tenure after THAT ending to the previous one.
But I also always want to know more about the inside of Fleming's MI6. Those chapters are a goldmine for that, but I understand that it isn't exactly the most cinematic.

I think we will see the opening of the TMWTGG novel eventually. Barbara was the one who pushed for all the YOLT references in NTTD, and it's only a matter of time before she gets to the next novel (and the unadapted parts of MR, for that matter).

Maybe... I always worry that it's so Man From UNCLE-style naff though.

No. As for me, with myself, it is not divisive.

This entirely goes against the concept of something being divisive. It’s divisive because it divides a group of people (Bond fans) people into sides (I like the emotional stuff in the Craig Bond films, vs I prefer not to have emotional stuff in my Bond films).

Divisiveness in this context doesn’t occur within an individual person, but among a group of people.

But there's me, myself, and I. Not to mention, My Conscience and My Desire, my Ego and my Id, the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. Oh, man, it's crowded in here !

I meant more the Goodnight from the novels whose certainly not presented as incompetent like in the film.

Goodnight in the film is a real low point of Bond girls. Whenever someone tries to say that Bond girls were actually mostly treated as empowered and strong, you'd have to look at Goodnight messing everything up and tottering around in a bikini, or Stacy not noticing an airship creeping up on her, and say they're not entirely correct :)

For those of you who watched Boba Fett yesterday........................they can now choose between Sean, Roger, Timothy, George, Pierce or Daniel to be Bond in the next installment.

It looked better than the last ep of S2 of The Mandalorian, but still nowhere near good enough even for the short screentime the character got yesterday, let alone a feature length film. They should have just recast the role.

Luke looked fine when the character never had to speak. That’s why most of his dialogue is spoken when his face is out of frame.

As weird as this sounds I always thought Charles Grey looked most like Flemings Blofeld because of the description in OHMSS. Minus the shiny chrome eyes of course.

Telly Savalas played a great Blofeld ! Robust, big appetites, self-centered, credible !
