A strong script with a craftsman director and a great editor seems like a good combination.

And don't forget an awesome second unit...

    Absolutely, and composer. Lol.

I guess my point is that a great script is vital.

Martin Campbell had to really pressure Purvis and Wade for stronger material for CR. They really need to go.

Didn't Campbell actually try to get P & W removed from CR, but EON wanted to keep them? They've also said that the script for the next film will 'probably' start with Purvis and Wade. Chances are their feet are under the table for the foreseeable.
Was it Forster or Mendes who said that BB and MGW sat watching him direct scenes and then passed him notes with their suggestions between takes? Can't see Nolan thriving under those circumstances, tbh.
The reason I wondered if Fukunaga would get another chance is because EON hired Paul Haggis to have an (uncredited) pass at the NTTD script, despite the allegations against him. Those were far more serious claims than the ones against Fukunaga and I wondered if BB gave Haggis the benefit of the doubt because they were just allegations at that point. Hence wondering if Cary would get the same chance. I totally get that BB might well want to steer completely clear, though.

@Venutius I'm really not sure the Paul Haggis hiring happened for NTTD.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm convinced that Scott Burns was the only uncredited script doctor on NTTD and that, after a P&W early draft, the heavy lifting thereafter came from Fukunaga, then Burns did a two week action polish, then more heavy lifting in the final weeks was done by PWB.

Haggis was mentioned in some papers, but it never, as far as I was told, came to fruition (or was even considered; I could be mistaken, but I don't think so, lol)

Thanks for that, Peter - EON not having any involvement with someone with Haggis's recent reputation is much more congruent with what I'd have expected from Barbara Broccoli, tbh.

after Boyle’s dismissal l, and Fukunaga’s hiring, they attacked writing duties pretty aggressively and rolled out the shooting draft with efficiency (no matter what some may think of the final product; I’m strictly taking writing not the film).

This really would be a dream come true, unfortunately I feel like they won't have even started filming by then, no matter whose directing it...

I assume Campbell is too old to be considered nowaday, but who knows? EON are seeming loyal to purvis and wade no matter what they do, perhaps they DO think Campbell has one more film in him. I can't tell you how happy it would make me to see this man in the directors chair of another Bond film, I would probably cry. He's one of the last guys left who actually grew up at the time of Fleming, and feels a part of both that old world and the modern one we live in. Perhaps that's some of why he's so successful, and why his films feel so authentically bond.

I'm all for Martin Campbell as Bond 26's director. I'm sure James Bond fans around the world would speedily approve of him. Also, I want him to complete the hat-trick of launching three Bonds successfully.

Yes, that really would be a fantastic achievement.

They won’t go for it. The age, as stated above. That’s not where EON is.

    Because that worked in 2006.

@peter was the early forms of the script incorporating more of the YOLT Fleming story, as I'm guessing it was. The island is mentioned as being near Japan and Russia, which in the final version of the film is irrelevant, but has significant meaning when tied to the Fleming novel.

I've also seen an artist impression of the shed that Bond hides in while in the poisonous garden. Again, this didn't make it into the final film but features heavily in the novel.

    :))

Those days of boycotts and Craig will be a one and done. Lol.
As much as I'd like to see Martin Campbell return for a third film, it's not going to happen.

Looks like the strike will be averted afterall, hopefully that means EON can finally kick into gear and get things rolling on Bond 26 before another delay happens.

@jetsetwilly I've no idea if the early scripts skewed closer to the YOLT novel.

@Mendes4Lyfe , where exactly are you getting your information from? There have been some promising signs that discussions are continuing, but the WGA is still about to propose to members that they be given authorization to strike.

The expectation at the moment is that everyone is still expecting a strike to happen.

So if you have information I'm not privy to, I'd love to get the source.

    Signs have been positive during week two that discussions are ongoing, after a very bad week one. But;

The WGA will be asking members to authorize the strike this week….

Although there was good momentum in discussions this weeks, the expectation is strike.

May 1 is a long way off.

Can you post the articles that say the WGA has “reached an agreement”, because positive talks and an agreement are two wholly different thing.

I’m kinda stuck in the middle of this @Mendes4Lyfe … so I’d really appreciate you citing the articles that said an agreement was happening. Because I was just told yesterday that there were positive discussions, but we are still expecting a strike….

"the two sides are closer than expected" is what I read from deadline.

Read the full Deadline article @Mendes4Lyfe . Not the bits you want. Even in that article, they still state the expectation is that we will strike.

The article also states that the WGA will be asking for strike action this week.

We are a long way off from averting a strike. This is a rollercoaster ride and there will be ups and downs until May 1.

    Week one of discussions, abysmal.
    Week two was positive.
Who knows what week three will bring.

But posting that a strike has been averted is very premature.

Read that article again, @Mendes4Lyfe … I can assure you as one who is presently working with a producer who is a WGA signatory, we are blasting through rewrites every day on my adaptation so everything is polished by May 1! The reason is because 95% still expect a strike to happen.

    We pray it doesn’t.

But the expectation is still mobilizing for a strike (if the talks were almost on the brink of an agreement, the WGA would probably take the step to show good faith and NOT ask for strike authorization this week. But they’re not close to an agreement, and that’s why they ARE asking for strike authorization since that’s the power punch they have left to prove to the producers, that they are willing to go the distance, regardless of “positive talks”)!

I'd welcome Campbell back. His non-Bond films are irrelevant; he understands what makes these movies work and he also understands how to bring Bond to life on screen. Neither Brosnan nor Craig recaptured the steely-yet-charismatic performances they gave in GE and CR.

But the important point is that these movies need action directors and action writers, not dramatists. Bond movies are not dramas, they are action-adventures, and it seems like Babs and Michael have forgotten that.

@slide_99 , personally I thought Brosnan was head and tails better in TND , than the unsure performance he, IMO, put forth in GE.

And have you seen NTTD yet? I'm assuming you haven't, and if that's the case, I'm not sure you can judge all of the Craig era.

As weird as it may sound, I think Brosnan sports a better haircut in TND than in Goldeneye. His haircut in GE is a bit too “Remington Steele” than “James Bond.”

Absolute BS. They would never entrust a rookie director… she’s a writer, actress. If there’s any truth in this I’m 100% certain it’s for a writing gig.
