Where does Bond go after Craig?

I’m unsure if this post is on the right place, but I’m currently really enjoying the new Mr and Mrs Smith on Amazon. I remember watching Bourne Identity and feeling like it brought something fresh to the genre. M&MS is the first thing I’ve watched in years that I really felt was bringing something new to the genre. The main thing for me is that it gets the genre and builds on it with great dialogue, some great comedic elements but plays it’s pretty straight for most of the time. Donald Glover is awesome and the costumes (and his expansive watch collection) , set design and globe trotting elements really work. If you love Bond, and have a significant other, I think you’ll find it a really enjoyable watch.

Why would you predict that? Even if they nobody at EON did anything to advance the development of Bond 26 for another half a year, there would be still plenty of time to finish the film in time for a 2026 release. Not 2028. Not 2027. 2026.

Heck, right now even a late 2025 release is still possible.

I think the game will come out before the film.

Both Barbara and Gregg have admitted that nothing has happened on Bond 26 and its been 2 and a half years, or around 30 months since Bond 25 premiered. I see no reason why production would suddenly ramp up out of nowhere, and even then the process of recasting Bond is likely to take months in itself.

At the moment, it's looking like 2026 is Bond 26's year. 2025 can only be possible if a script is finished this year and they unveil Bond 7 in October.

Could it be a weariness has set in and there's not much enthusiasm for a new Bond and film? Might the old guard feel as those Bond actors who felt it was time to pass the torch. Other than those who read and post to this site, is the general public waiting anxiously for the next Bond film?

I don't think the general public anxiously waits for a Bond film, unless we are talking about the height of Bondmania?

But once the film is cast and in production, interest will turn to it...

Once the posters are showcasing its Coming Soon...

And once it's released, the public will be there as they always have been. They are good escapist fun, and a good night out.

    I don't see this changing...

I'm sure you're right. Once the PR machine cranks up, it's possible the next Bond film will be the most successful yet. But I do find the long wait and lack of anything hinting at the next installment to be interesting, hence my comment about a possible weariness on the of the producers. I know actors tire of playing the same role. I assume it's the same for scriptwriters. I understand the EON family Bond enterprise, but do you think it's that way for producers as well?

Not sure why any weariness amongst the producers (should it exist) matter. At the end of the day while Bond is a legacy, for EON making these films is also a job. As much as anyone can become weary about a job they still have to do it (and often regardless of the field they’ll do it with that weariness/having done it so long to the best of their ability).

Weariness might not give us the best film, but it’ll likely get us a film. Honestly, I can imagine EON rushing things if they genuinely felt that way.

If we do get a B26 someday, I'd say Eon would more likely keep a November release. However, I agree we won't get another film until 2028 at the earliest.
My hunch is it won't be until the 2030s, and by then it sadly won't be a cinematic release.
I have a feeling all content will be streamed as the cinemas will probably close by the next decade. :(

It'll be sad when the movie theaters disappear. It used to be going to the movies was an event. Going from the fridge to the chair to watch the next Bond film really not that special. Got to love those days of the Bond double feature. That was an event.

In any case, I think Bond 26 has to be a great film to maintain the success of the franchise. I think each of the six actors' first films were pretty good and ambitious. Goldeneye and Casino Royale in particular were important to ensure the continued existence of the series. What is Martin Campbell actually doing these days?

Bond 26 in 2026 on the 20th anniversary of CR? There's a fair few free PR hooks right there. I'd rather wait til 2027 or '28 if it means we get a timeless classic Bond movie rather than one designed to meet a passing anniversary, though.

I don’t think movie theaters will ever truly end. They still have passionate fans. Sometimes, it’s the case of people not shutting up, and thinking that they are in their own living room that turns people off.

Martin Campbell is reuniting with Bond alumni these days, it seems. I think he wants to end his Bond time on a high note, though. CR is generally considered better than GE in a lot of ways it seems.

I would take Martin Campbell directing Bond 26 in a heartbeat, and if they were to start filming tomorrow that could work, but it's likely going to be another 3 to 4 years before a frame of the film is shot, by which time Campbell will be closer to 90 than 80, which is pushing it a bit.

Oddly enough I'd say there is a solid chance that Christopher Nolan knocks out his next film in a few years and then is available again to direct bond 26 in 2028.

I would take Campbell in a heartbeat as well for the next Bond film. Movie theaters will become more and more prehistoric as more affordable high end VR home theaters become the norm. That said, I will always go out of my way to see theater based retro screenings of the Bond film to get my "double bill" fix.

I’d still like Gareth Evans to do it, but sadly the more I’ve thought about it, the more I can’t see it happening. I don’t think EON, or any big studio, would let him shoot all the action himself and oversee his usual long post production/editing process. And if he couldn’t do that, then there wouldn’t be any point in getting him. When it comes to action nobody can touch him, outside of that, he’s just okay.

Campbell would be fine but I think I’d prefer someone new. Love GE, less keen on CR, and I think his recent films have been very hit and miss. And I still can’t picture a Nolan Bond film feeling different enough to the last few Craig films.

Probably too inexperienced for the next one, but a name to keep an eye on imo is Bill Hader. Barry was brilliant and some bits in it made me think he could do one some day, if he shifts into directing films. There’s a camp darkly comic edge to that show, and the unique action scenes strangely gave me an old school Bond vibe at times, with all the visual gags, long distance shots and the lack of music.

If Bond films of the future are only made every five years or more, and assuming big scale theatrical exhibition will even survive, I gotta wonder about the feasability of having one actor tied down in the role.

Maybe it's one & done from here on ...

@thelivingroyale, give me a world where Gareth is responsible for the choreography and shooting of the action and I'd be a very, very happy fan.

Otherwise, I'd still be giddy as hell to have Campbell return for his third intro entry in a row, no matter his age.

Campbell is too old and I don't think he can give us anything new.

Well, I don't think he can give us another Casino Royale either.

Age means nothing behind the camera. The man doesn't have the strongest non-Bond filmography but he understands the character and the franchise and has proven his talents twice already.

Directing takes a lot of stamina and it's much harder to do night shoots when you get that much older.

I think Gareth's action is more in line with Robert Rodriguez's style, plus he's more about excessive fisticuffs. I can't see how suitable his style would be for Bond. I think action in a Bond film is delicate. Do it without care, and it becomes another Hong Kong action flick.

Me too @Creasy47. I think we’ll have to be content with that Tom Hardy film he’s got coming out though.

His action scenes have kinetic camerawork but I wouldn’t say he’s like Rodriguez at all. And I think Apostle showed he can do variety, I don’t think he’d treat Bond like a martial arts film.

@thelivingroyale, I always remember you as the other Evans fan I can remember, so I think of you randomly whenever I wonder when the hell Havoc is finally going to release or at least get a trailer. I've no doubts he's going to crush it with it.

Yeah. That's my worry @thelivingroyale Treating Bond like a Kungfu/Gunfu film. Can Gareth resist not to, though? Hmmmm. It's like telling Michael Bay to tell his actors not to talk loud and scream, while he frames them from low and tight angles.

I think Gareth could make it not like The Raid or an all-out martial arts film but I still think it'd be unlike any action we've seen in the past (aside from maybe a few flashes in QoS? Which, of course, excites me greatly).
