Damm, he still looks amazing and much younger than Wikipedia wants to make me believe he is. Would be great to have him back for one final Bond film.
If there's a list of potential James Bond actors, then you'd imagine there's one with potential James Bond directors.
Having given the world the fifth and sixth Bond's, then Martin Campbell would surely be on that list.
Definitely.
I share your frustration.
Exactly. No one says Ridley Scott should stop directing. Or Eastwood, for that matter.
Campbell can make movies for Liam Neeson. No one says he should retire.
I don't doubt Campbell can still do it but time is of the essence, they would really have to get rolling soon if that were the case.
To be honest EON are so loyal to their own that they only tend to let the regulars go once they've gotten sick of Bond, and Campbell has stated he would do another one, so I wouldn't put it past them bringing him back.
On another note, if they were planning on doing something potentially dirisive with the next film, like raceswapping bond, it might be seen as a sweetener to have fan favourite director Martin Campbell at the helm to quell any anxieties.
Not really, since Hamilton was retired when GE entered production. I think it's also fair to say that Campbell has a superior track record with Bond to Hamilton.
"We didn't need that?"....did Hamilton direct GE?
That's my point. We left the past behind.
That is very true. Aren't Ridley Scott and Michael Mann in their 80's? Ridley's 86!
Best director ever :)
That's just another reason to hire him IMO. And bring back David Arnold while we're at it. :D
I could be wrong, but I think fans tend to overemphasise that situation. From what I understand he didn’t try to get them fired. I mean, how could he? He’s not a producer and I suspect had he suggested to EON that they fire two of their long term collaborators (who seemingly worked on this project for a relatively long period) he would have been on very rocky grounds with the company at worst, or laughed out of the room at best. It was simply a case where P&W had done their (pretty extensive) drafts and Campbell suggested that an alternative writer who he thought suited to the job come in and work on it going into the final stages. Seems pretty standard really.
Unless Campbell has some sort of strange grudge against these two writers (and there’s no reason to believe he would - I doubt he’s even met them that many times) there’s no reason he’d be especially tough on them. No more than any other writer who produced drafts of a script he thought needed work.
Agreed, Campbell is just so good at bedding in the new actor, his reserved workmanlike style means they can take the follow up in any direction they choose. If quantum had pivoted into a more broad bond adventure I don't think anyone would have thought twice about it, and similarly if Tomorrow Never Dies had taken a dark turn it would have been completely accepted and not jarring in the slightest. His style just gives the producers a lot of room to manoeuvre when in comes to where they what to take things in future.
Now if EON only would wake up from their desks, phone Campbell and tell him he's back in the directors chair and we can finally get this show on the road!
Martin would have a blast. One last hurrah. And we'd be a happy bunch.
If only... ;)
Anyway, not anything Campbell can do without scripts/a solid direction for the next film. Better get that sorted first really.
When it comes to a director, I favor an excellent craftsman rather than a high profile auteur.
All we know (or perhaps it's just rumour) is that Campbell apparently preferred Henry Cavill to Craig back in '05. So presumably he would be happy with Cavill as bond, although it's not his decision obviously.
Well, we know he wants to do it because he's said as much in interviews through the years, including recently. Whether EON want him is another matter, although after the fiasco of Boyle on Bond 25 it may be that they want a reliable pair of hands without too many pretensions, especially since they find themselves behind the 8 ball somewhat with the strikes and whatever else.
Indeed, and above all else, one that understands Bond on a pragmatical level.
