    Yes, Bond should not drink either. Thanks for the reminder @theliving .Alcohol destroys lives just as much as cigarettes do. In fact alcohol by some is seen as more addictive than heroin.

    But Bond drinks in the movies because it is glamorous. I think he should have mineral water from now on and if he is really naughty, a freshly squeezed orange juice :) Now in all seriousness he has become boring by removing that also.

    Bond is a fantasy figure who does things and experiences things we do not. If Bond was a heroin addict in the early films and the books, then I say show it.

    My point is that smoking is part of the character's origins. How is him being seen as a smoker bad and as a killer good?

    I'm against smoking and never have, probably never will at my age. I agree that it kills and is frankly very dangerous. But James Bond smokes. It's part of his character. I almost wanted to stop reading Carte Blanche when Deaver said Bond was a former smoker. It's a person's choice if they want to smoke or not and the health riks are readily apparent and well documented.

    Oh man, just have Daniel suck on a prop & digitally add in the smoke- problem solved for all. Seriously now.

    Bond smokes, and he doesn't expect to live forever, bottom line.

    Btw, not to go all NSNA on this, but the free radicals caused by smoking are produced by a lot of other daily factors for non-smokers as well- good nutrition is the best defence either way.

    I know that, I was just saying that it isn't shown onscreen apparent enough for me.

    You know what's weird? Of the five or six times in my whole life I've smoked a cigarette, each time, I've felt sick and thrown up! What is up with that??? Has anyone heard of anything so bizarre? Am I just a big wimp?

    @Master_Dahark, it just happens to some people. My friend's parents both quit smoking for many years, and took it back up this summer with no problem. I've known other people who quit smoking for around the same time, had a cigarette, and then felt sick and threw up. Some like it, some don't, and I'm in the former category. I enjoy smoking, and you only go around once in this world, so do what you enjoy while you can. I'm sure I'll give it up when it's time for me to have kids or something, but for now, I won't.

    @0BradyM0Bondfanatic7, probably, but I enjoy smoking, and I don't want to miss out on the finer pleasures in life. If I neglected to smoke my entire life thus far, and was killed by a speeding car tomorrow, what would be the difference? I'll enjoy myself while I can.

    no one as mentioned that Craigs bond is right at the start of his career and maybe he was a smoker when he was younger but packed it up. But after a few missions and the stress of killing starts to get to him he turns to smoking later in life maybe a month or two before he his sent out to Jamaica. That's why we see him smoking from DR NO on wards

    anyway i think its good Craig packed up and should stay away from smoking roles it is hard to quit i should know i have tried to many times but after a drink soon find myself back on them but now i have cut back and taking my own steps to kick the habit

    Roles that require smoking are inconsequential. The production team can easily provide herbal cigarettes like they do for Mad Men.

    Iconic figures of the past smoked. Iconic figures of today don't.
    The difference is down to a well grounded fear of terminal disease but it is also very much down to people wanting to prolong their athletic and sexual prowess and to look good longer.
    Smoking looks appropriate in period movies — as it was at the time. In contemporary films it looks completely and utterly out of place. If Bond looked cool in 1962, lighting up in a Casino at the start of Dr.No. He would look distinctly ridiculous today, huddled in a door way, puffing away with a load of office nit wits.
    It will be interesting to see how William Boyd handles Bond's nicotine habit in his forthcoming novel. Evidently, its set in1969,Bond is 45 and if he has retained his sixty a day habit with his beloved Moreland specials with the three gold rings, he will have been a chain smoker for at least 25 years. This means that he will have a great deal of difficulty climbing a flight of stairs, let alone chasing a villain!
    Daniel has done a great thing stopping. Yes, its tough at first but he'll be surprised how quickly you will become a true non-smoker. I stopped fifteen years ago and it's the best thing I ever did.

    If they were going to have him smoke, they should have done it in Skyfall when he was at the bar with the scorpion, and at the Casino in Macau.

    That's exactly what I said. There wouldn't be a better placement for Bond smoking than either of those scenes.

    The bar with the scorpion would have been perfect then they could have found the tumour during his Mi6 medical and got him straight into chemo!

    When watching Severine in SF, she looked very sexy with the cigarette in the casino. A lot of casinos allow smoking. I do not think you would need to show Bond standing outside having a cigarette.

    Why would Bond look ridiculous smoking? If anything it would add to his anti-hero image. Bond has never been a paragon of virtue or a healthy lifestyle advert. He is a character with a prediction for a short life expectancy.

    And I know smokers who work out a lot and hence are able to be highly physically fit. I know non-smokers who are physically incompetent by fifty.Mental attitude comes into play and Bond has a very strong mental attitude.

    If we are so concerned with health then why is it ok for Bond to drink? Alcohol is also very bad for fitness and causes all kinds of health issues. Ever been around an alcoholic because it is not a pleasant sight either.

    I do not drink but have no problem showing heavy drinking in films if it suits the character.

    In the '60s my doctor smoked as did Ian Fleming until he passed away prematurely in 1964 at the age of 56.
    In 1976 it was announced that the warning that smoking may damage your health was completely inadequate as it was proven that it caused lung cancer.
    Today, smokers do not sit in luxury environments posing with their gunmetal cigarette cases and their oxidised Ronsons. They huddle in the pouring rain clutching packaging that shows them lovely pictures of lung, mouth, stomach and throat tumours that they try to laugh off as they prefer to think of themselves as the last anti-heroes. In reality they are hopelessly addicted to tobacco and the vast majority would love to quit.
    Craig has done the right thing and I hope he stays the course.
    Bond is a fictional character that has thrived because his creators and managers respect the times and sorry for you puffers out there but today's Bond would no more smoke than he would have a frontal lobotomy.

    Oh yeah, because smoking a pack or two over the span of a week would totally kill him. I think it's not outlandish to assume that Bond may have smoked when he was younger given his hard life, and that on occasions when he's in a low place in his life again like after he 'died' in Skyfall, then I think its perfectly understandable that he would pick up a bad habit again, like he did with drinking!

    My two cents: maybe Bond should be a reluctant non-smoker. Have M force him to stay away from cigarettes, use the novel Thunderball as source (there are some really great dialogues when M sends him to Shrubland). Just a thought.

    I would love to see a smoking Bond again. This anti-smoking is a PC measure and Bond is a stressed character underneath.

    @Villiers53, I love how some people think 'smokers of today' are just copying 'cool' movie figures and famous celebrities.

    Are there people out there who smoke to 'be like Bond' or 'be cool and fit in?' Probably, and that's pathetic. My friend was dating a girl for a while who took up smoking, just because he liked it. Hey, if you want to inch yourself closer to death just to impress some guy (who she ended up leaving around eight months later, and is now addicted to smoking), then by all means, help yourself.

    I enjoy smoking because, well, I enjoy smoking. I don't do it for Bond, celebrities, movie figures, because others think "it's cool," or because some of my friends do it. I do it because I enjoy a cigarette after a long day of work or a rough day of finals. I enjoy a cigarette after sitting in a movie theater for a few hours, watching a good movie. I enjoy a cigarette after an incredibly delicious meal. I enjoy a cigarette with my coffee in the morning.

    Is smoking bad? Absolutely. Nobody could deny that. But, as I previously stated, anything can kill you these days. As amply (and unfortunately) demonstrated in Connecticut, you aren't even safe at school. Why deny me one of the few things I get to enjoy? I'm not hurting you or any other anti-smokers when I choose where to smoke.
