A Bond movie (to ME) should have a slight sense of the absurd to it, contain at least moment where I wonder if someone could really do/survive something, make me laugh a few times, get my blood pumping, and make me want to see it again soon.

A coworker of mine, around 40, recently saw it and I asked him what he thought. He loved the pts and thought the car chase and its conclusion was brilliant, but that it dragged big time in the middle. I am guessing he meant some of the scenes in Austria and the hotel in Morocco.(I have stayed in several Moroccan hotels by the way, and they all look like that). He fell asleep.

Guess the dude likes action and hates talking in movies.

Oh no, there's a Brosnan fan working with you? How can you cope with such specimen? ;)

Didn t ask him anymore than that. We work while at work. We are not French.

    =D> :))

There were some 20 yr olds next to me in the theatre on my 2nd watch. From the moment Bond went to Austria they started texting.....all the way up to London (with a brief look up to take in the Hinx fight and the torture scene). They didn't seem too impressed. Also, I have never seen people leave a theatre faster than the audience did at this showing...

Yes. I'm not sure why, but for all the Spectre showings I've been to, the audience seemed disengaged. I was one of the first ones to see it in the country, naturally you'd assume that the people in that showing were primarily Bond fans. However they gave me the impression of average moviegoers. People barely laughed at jokes, and not a single clap at the end.

GE is damaged by some lousy dialogue and a horrible soundtrack (and, unlike most, I disliked the tank chase), but it is indeed a much better film, both structurally and in terms of pure enjoyment, than SP.

Which is quite something considering it was the strongest script of the Broz era...

GE is far superior to SP imho. SP has its moments, but GE is the better Bond film. It's just so much fun. Dialogue wise, I actually find GE far more memorable as well, even if it's borderline camp.

From what i gather from reading everyone's comments, is that whether you like or dislike SP, it does seem to me that the film lacked the 'fun' factor, to hold a persons interest in the film!.........I found it fine, but i can understand why people with goldfish brains would tire of the film!

In my screening very few people left when the credits rolled, most people waited to see "James Bond will be back" show up in the screen :D

I'll take SP over GE any day.

Terrible cheat of a PTS, OTT cartoon characters in Onatopp and Boris, explosions and machine gun rampages masking any real action, excruciatingly awful dialogue which I suspect they misguidely thought was profound. Terrible Bond too. Brosnan is too self consciously prancing and posing as Bond in the PTS and then his spectacular fail at a foreign language in the Casino.

It was quite devastating at the time to know this was the Bond we would be saddled for for the next decade or so.

I appreciate it's very popular with a lot of people but it'd take more than the hiatus, Remington Steel - which flopped in the UK - and a computer game to make me appreciate this particular emperor's new clothes.

I adore Spectre, but I'm not sure I can say the same for the people around me.

I love GE, but c'mon- it's a different KIND of Bond from SP... that's like comparing LTK to TSWLM...

I liked SP, but I much prefer GE. It just has spark....it's not trying too hard. It set out to be a 'Bond film' and it succeeded. SP did the 'Bond film' part great, but I didn't like the other things it was trying to do at the same time.....it all seemed jumbled to me.....

Up to the end of Rome, SP surpasses GE. Then GE takes it, including a superb latter half (such a rarity for a Bond film these days.......sigh...)

Yes i agree........some have said they don't like the last London part of the film and it wasn't really needed..........i disagree, i would of been well disappointed if the film had finished after the explosion at the Spectre base.........i thought the last act, whether you like it or not added an extra quality and dimension to the story......so there!

Loved the earlier comment about folks texting during the showing. Boomer that I am, I know I'm not supposed to get it. That I just don't get how being in constant touch with someone--anyone--is so now. Do these same folks also text during sex because the activity at hand doesn't provide enough stimulation? I gather Bond would be far more relevant if he kept checking his messages every few minutes.

In the UK it is frowned upon if people look at their mobiles during a film......its ok to do so during the adverts, prior to a films start, but its very distracting to see a screen light up like a light bulb in the cinema!

Light up your smartphone in a U. S. cinema & you take the chance of getting shot.

Bondforever, my thoughts exactly. I still have issues with the final section in London. No offence to Londoners, but we had enough of that from SF. I also wish the final section stayed in Tangier, but how they would have done it, I'm not sure. I also wish they stayed in Austria for longer. And wouldn't it have been great if that fight scene with Hinx was right at the end. The most exciting sequence in the film, if you ask me. I hope for Bond 25, they stage the majority of the film in one major location. (Japan, perhaps?)

I say they go to germany and india, and russia for the pre title sequence :D

There was a moment where Hinx actually catches up with Bond and even pulled up beside him. Hinx didn't pull out his gun and start firing at Bond, he didn't ram into him or do any aggressive maneuvers to stop him. I didn't perceive any immediate threat.

Good point. I was wondering the same thing. What was Hinx hoping to accomplish? Get Bond to pull over from intimidation?

Funny you should mention that. I never got the feeling that Bond was in danger with Hinx driving behind him. The train scene of course was a different story.
  • It's interesting, the more reviews I read that are more critical of SP than mine was, I actually find myself feeling defensive of it. I think it just makes me recall all of the things I love about the first half, and overlook the weaknesses in the second. I'm curious what another viewing would do to my opinion....

I'm thinking of giving it a third view this weekend, but I am hesitant. I have a fear that it will come off as bad or worse, and I don't want to bury it any deeper than it is now. Those major issues aren't going away.

Debating whether or not to give it a go.

Since you don't like it, I would wait a little while longer - at least another week or two. See it too often too soon and you'll probably hate it more.

That's nothing. I could go on for 80 minutes.
I could have done the same for Skyfall... but SPECTRE made me appreciate it more. I'm afraid I'm a 21st Century James Bond fan after all.
Thank you Dan Craig & Sam Mendes!!!

Skyfall was for the masses, a stupid daytime soap drama plot, and it worked bringing in the masses.
  • 1. Not sure why Hinx starts the fight on the train if ESB was planning on JB and MS arriving at his lair. Did Hinx go rogue?

Exactly. Spectre was just such a weird film for me because individually I really liked certain sequences (like the train fight), but in the entire plot of the movie very little made any sense. Why does Hinx keep trying to kill Bond when Blofeld wants him face to face? Why does Spectre want to capture Swann at all? Why does Bond voluntarily ride into Spectre's crater base?

I was never a big fan of the MI series because I felt that aside from the first film in the series, they were just mindless action (although very good mindless action if we're talking about the last 2). If you're going to have a film that's weak on the plot, or is rehashing something from a past film, then I think you've got to go all in and make it an unbelievably fun film (like MI has done). SP seemed like it tried to ride the fence between a mindless action film and one that had some emotional heft to the story and in the end the tone just felt really off to me.

No comparison between SP and GE. SP is light years ahead of it. In fact most Bond films are light years ahead of GE.

SP is a bit better than GE.
Nothing is lightyears ahead of GE.
