Bored, bored, bored....Bond idea...

One of the issues about being self employed is that, when you have a quiet day, you get distracted and do this:

This seems like an interesting idea, although there do seem to be some implausibilities, such as Bond inflicting torture to gain information -- especially torture that causes permanent disfigurement. You can't do this sort of thing with a main protagonist, especially one like James Bond.

Whilst I would question the wisdom of sharing an uncooked "idea" (since these are not subject to copyright and can easily be nicked by others), it looks like a viable outline for a script. Why don't you develop it more before somebody else does?

Hi, thanks for the comment, it is appreciated.

I do work on other original (non-Bond) scripts and treat them with the professionalism they deserve. To be honest, a Bond script is always going to be pure fun (and a welcome break from the efforts of other work)
there is 0.000001% chance of anything serious coming from it so , on that basis, I am happy to throw ideas out there for the forum members to love, hate, ignore or comment on.

Plus, trying to come up with a complete cohesive 140 mins worth makes you appreciate how hard it is and have more sympathy/respect for those who do it.

Re the torture scene, I have not put it in lightly. The fight/torture scene takes place immediately after Bond has seen the Prof shot and, without going through the whole thing, he is bloody angry/furious as she had personal technical knowledge that was key to the investigation plus he had an emotional connection. Anger/rage makes people go close/over the edge.

Plus, the fact you raise it, shows it would be a talking point concerning just how far Bond would go to obtain information and a wider reflection of what western governments (and their agents) will do - "the end justifying the means", water boarding, etc, he has a license to kill so is it implied he has a license to torture? interesting and not cut and dried, open to discussion

Plus it is part of the theme running through the script - physical and emotional scars that agents collect along the way and the scars that they give to others.
The script is 90% complete. All good fun and better than watching X Factor or strangers baking cakes.
    Thanks again

Agreed. Bond GETS tortured, he doesn't torture. He kills.

There were some solid ideas, but I agree about the torture idea, and I'm also unsure how I'd feel about the closing moments of a Bond film being Bond and M going off to play sports.

It is interesting that torture is such a taboo and understandably. We have seen Bond kill and injure so many people over the years and that's what he does but we hesitate at the idea of him torturing a bad guy - even if the information gained will save many innocent lives. As with many things, it is not only about Bond but reflects on our wider values.
Good guys kill and injure but only the bad guys torture (even though we know in the real World, it's far more complex). Why is taking someones life acceptable but applying pain in order to obtain information just "not Bond" ?
Yes, the ending needs changing. see below:

    Final scene:

On a spring morning in a Parisian park, Bond and M sit on a bench. Bond confronts M about whether he knew that Kessler didn’t have access to the new explosive. M reminds Bond that the motives for the assignment are not his concern and he just follows orders. If that’s not acceptable, he can pass over his Walter and take retirement. Bond pauses, reaches into his inner pocket and pulls out a packet of French cigarettes that Anne has given him as a goodbye present. He lights two cigarettes, passes one to M as a gesture of appeasement and takes a long, deep breath on his own. After a thoughtful pause:

“I must lose myself in action”. M competes the quote “ lest I wither in despair.”

Bond nods and smiles: acknowledging that M knows the quote and it's context within Bond's life.

Because torture implies death, and anyone in that position is being brought to an inconceivable (to most of us) edge that removes basic sanity. Information gained in this way is dubious at best and made up to satisfy at worst. Bond would never resort to methods that he reviled (& never worked on him to boot).

    noun: torture

    1.
the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something

Based on some of these examples, I am happy (at the moment) for Bond to drip acid on to the cheek of a henchman, its proportional IMHO

A mere slap is NOT torture. It is unpleasant. It's like spanking a child. Hurtful, and to be avoided if humanly possible, but not in the realm of life-changing physical damage. The one who inflicts real torture has lost his claim to humanity, and indeed has lost his own soul. A great price to pay for a quick & dubious intelligence fix. Torture a rabid dog for biting a child to find out why he did it? Makes as much sense I guess. And yields about as much useful information, generally.

On a wider note, as the character is so well established and fans know him so well, when you are trying to write a script, what Bond can actually do is rather limited (like a creative straight jacket)
"Bond pops into Tesco for a pint of milk" - NO!
"Bond enters the casino and orders a cocktail" - YES
so all of the time when creating a script, you are thinking, "does Bond actually do that?"
and I suppose the fun part is snipping around at the edges to open up the character a little whilst not going too far. The torture discussion is a good example of being on the edge (or going over it),

This thread went from a Bond fanfic to an analysis of torture and physical pain.

Well, there was a torture scene in a it got debated, that's fair enough, I have put a link in for a full scene by scene breakdown of the script, that may get it back on track

The Anne subplot feels quite similar to Camille's background in QoS, Bond torturing feels very Jack Bauer. But I like the idea of the scene with M at the end.

I hope in a future Bond they have the end of Moonraker the novel - Bond sat lonely on a bench after he's discovered that the Bond girl was engaged to someone all along - would definitely suit Craig's Bond.

Re Camille, yes, that did cross my mind but is it different enough in that we only find her motivation 10 mins from end? or some may guess it earlier? (also it gives the chance to play with the audience re their own expectations as we see her at the masked ball and then with a scarf so the scars come as a big reveal - for Bond and the audience, in my own fantasy World where the movie is marketed - the scares are never shown) plus the scarring makes here a very different Bond girl IMHO, they never "hook up" - affection, flirtation and mutual respect
thanks for the feedback on the final scene
