True with the exception of Aladdin and the King of Thieves, that one I like very much.
Also The Mummy Returns, which came out a year before DAD.
Agreed. The one exception to the rule.
Death Wish 2, 3, 4, 5 - although i love me some Bronson vigilante justice, they are all just exaggerated rehashes of the original.
The Exorcist 2 - the original is a classic.. the 2nd film is so bad that the underrated 3rd film is a better alternative.
Children Of The Corn - the original is a personal favorite of mine, the drop from it to it's numerous sequels is a really steep drop.
Nightmare On Elm St. Part 2 : Freddy's Revenge - just a piss poor sequel to a classic... and it's easily forgettable sandwiched between 2 superior films..
Halloween III - although i defend this movie on its own for actually being pretty good.. the fact that they tied this film to the 2 films prior that had Michael Myers by calling it Halloween III, really doomed it from the start.
Jaws 3 and 4 - I don't mind the concept of the idea behind the 3rd film, but the hokey 3D effects are just hilariously bad..... and the 4th movie is easily one the worst films ever made.
Jason Goes To Hell and Jason X - the friday the 13th series isn't full of academy award winning material, but easily the 2 missteps in this franchise are number 9 and 10 respectively, with #10 being worse than #9.
Major League 3 : Back To The Minors - the original is a baseball movie classic, and it's sequel, while not as great, is still a fun entertaining film... the 3rd film in this franchise is often forgotten about, and for good reason - it's atrocious.
Caddyshack 2 - it's amazing how many terrific first films - classic films - spawned such gutter trash sequels.
Blair Witch Project 2 - the original movie helped ignite the new era of found footage horror films, and is a personal favorite of mine... the sequel is just weird, and by the end turns into a trashy late night skin-a-max style porno (which wasn't completely bad, but not what i was expecting).
there are more for sure... i'll post more when i think of them.
And I agree on 'The Mummy Returns'. The first was popcorn fun, 2 was popcorn on the floor of th cinema 5 weeks later.
3 & 4 are Death Wish films I like most, followed by 1, 2 and lastly 5.
Those two attract more ire than any other films in the series. They are either hated for being too different, or because they are Friday The 13th films. Jason Goes To Hell is one of my favourite entries. The opening and closing sequences are the best in the series. What's in between, I can appreciate for trying something different. Jason X has some of the most inventive kills (that is what the series is all about) in the series. But the film paints the series into a corner. A new sequel would have to screw with any continuity the series has, and act as though Jason X didn't happen.
JX - god where do i start... this is the DAD of the Jason franchise as far as i'm concerned.... Crystal Lake Research Facility? When in the hell did this happen???? - and some research facility, kind of just looks like an empty basement - complete with leaky water pipes that wont stop dripping.. i normally don't get hung up over set design - but com'on, it's so cheap looking for some "high tech" security / research facility, that even the guys at Asylum Films would've thought twice about it.... there should be a rule: "If your film is under X amount of dollars for production budget - nothing trying to resemble high tech." ...... So once the inevitable happens, and Jason breaks loose - he gets frozen, then thawed out aboard a not too convincing space ship in the future - along with the girl who conveniently got frozen with him - this is where the movie starts circling the drain faster than the last time i took the Browns to the Super Bowl... the CGI effects were extremely dated, even by 2002 standards.... i could literally sit here and spin yarns about how terrible this movie is - but i will save that for another time.....
..... what i will leave you with, is that even my 9 year old niece, who loves watching these movies with me - even she said this movie sucked... when your "scary slasher movie" can't phase a 9 year old, then you know it's terrible.
The laughing stock of this movie year.
And considering MoS wasn't received well that's quite an achievment.
Mortal Kombat Annihilation
While the first one is a cult movie the second one is just crap.
MoS was better.
Teen Wolf Too
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (although not a fan of the first, this was truly terrible)
Son Of The Mask
Basic Instinct 2
Weekend At Bernies' 2
Jaws: The Revenge
Robocop 3
Honey I Blew Up The Kid
The Rage: Carrie 2
Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd
The Crow: City of Angels
I thought MoS was utter dogshit so gave BvS a wide berth but given you think it's so awful I'm beginning to think it might actually be half decent.
One film I haven't seen here which certainly deserves a spot is DAD.
Not sure it counts as although its part of an ongoing series it's not really a sequel to anything. Still it's very poor so deserves a place on this list surely?
If DAD counts then DAF would as well. And AVTAK.
And LTK.
Not sure we should go there.
The S in Bull v Shit is worse than in MoS, by far.
Batfleck is brilliant though!
And WW.
Overall it's the worst one since Batman & Robin.
Ok I'll wait for it on an illegal download then as charisma free Cavill does nothing for me. How did this guy get so close to being Bond FFS?
Perhaps we should only say Bond films are eligible if they are somehow connected to a previous one then so that they can be classed as sequels?
So that would mean:
FRWL
TB
YOLT
OHMSS
DAF
TMWTGG
MR
FYEO
QOS
SP
Of these I would say only DAF, TMWTGG and in some people's eyes maybe MR could be up for discussion but as the thread title is 'worst sequels in history' then there are probably no Bond films eligible as even DAF and TMWTGG are way better than dreck like Indy 4, Superman 4, Jaws 4 and Episode I (does a prequel count as a sequel? Or is the Phantom Menace the first film now and Episodes IV, V and VI the sequels?)
Haha, he's the Trump of the Bond world. =))
Halloween III: Season of the Witch, again, fails as a sequel. But on its own its a pretty effective 80's horror flick. The worst of the bunch is definitely Halloween: Resurrection though
Can't decide if it wants to be a remake or a sequel, fails at both.
Let s hope Ghostbusters 3 knocks it out of the park!
