Wow, I haven't seen that video in so long. Did some actually find it funny? It's a serious question - I'm sure they did, but wow, that was embarrassing to watch.

Yep. Plenty on here at the time who defended it. Wonder where they all are now?

Needless to say, I wasn't one of 'em!

Needless to say we're having the last laugh.

That we did and as they say whoever laughs last, laughs longest!

This scene reminds me of the Kanaga finale in LALD. Bond gets restrained and tortured by sadistic baddie of the film, girl watches helplessly, blood drips, audience winces a bit, baddie takes his sweet time, Bond uses a lame gadget watch trick to escape, ridiculous + very underwhelming outcome happens and the scene feels tonally at odds with the rest of the film.

In Colonel Sun, a doctor gives Bond a "little fix" of something that will keep him going for an hour or so after the drill torture. If they had worked something like that into the film, there would be less whining on here, I think.

The complex itself doesn't seem that well guarded considering its size.

That's very true actually. Bond's recovery seems far too rapid considering what he's just been through. It seemed more a comic book Moore Bond thing but maybe that was in keeping with the film?

By the way, what did you think of Colonel Sun, @Thunderfinger? For me, it's the best of the continuation Bond novels.

I liked Wood s THE SPY WHO LOVED ME better. I liked the beginning of CS, and the end, but there is a huge section in the middle that is just boring, and Amis has none of Fleming s descriptive powers.

Yes, I'd tend to agree that the beginning and end of Colonel Sun are the best bits and I've heard that criticism that it drags in the middle (especially the Altair boat bits) before. I need to reread it again actually to see how it holds up on a third reading many years later!

I guess one is left to reason that Blofeld failed to hit the right spot in Bond's head to fluster him as he wanted, and was prepared to drill again for another attempt, but was stopped with the watch. I haven't seen the scene in a while, though.

Fleming could make even mundane matters seem interesting. Amis could not, at least in this book.

That was my thinking, as he says " if it
Finds the right spot " so he missed.

Yes, @TheWizardOfIce has surmised that Blofeld didn't have a clue what he was doing with the machine at all. Your theory would tend to back this up.

Yes, Fleming was a hard act to follow as the pitfalls of the continuation project showed!

He should have left it to the professional, namely Colonel Sun Liang-tan.

Blofeld can't find the spot, hence why he's a lousy lover.

Not much chance of anyone wanting a screw with him. What lady wants a man who doesn't wear socks with shoes? He's supposed to be somewhat asexual a man anyway, so I call it a win for the characterization of the guy.

Yes, with slippers. I take it this was intentional to kind of make him more repulsive than he already was. It helped to make him look like a mental in-patient too.

It could be an homage to Sanchez ( LTK) who also liked a bare foot. I remember in
an interview with Anthony Hopkins about Hannibal. He did a scene in his bare feet.
as he remember going to a photographer many years ago and the guy, was walking
about in bare feet. He said it looked very sleazy , so used it in the film.
Then again it may have been a bad Christmas for Blofeld and no one bought him
    any that year.

If anything just like acupuncture, those deep penetrating probes, could actually
have invigorated 007 ! helping his balance and fashion sense, making him not
just a better agent but a better man !

I took it as the standard story element where Bond in danger gets back his Spidey sense. I mean, his mojo.
Well, you know what I mean.

You could say Blofeld tapped into Bond's inner invincible star. ;)
