Ok, so this took some doing. Here is my list, please note that no Bond movies are included. I have left the 007 movies out as my list would have had them all from ’73 onwards, due to a bit of bias.

    1976 – Logan’s Run
1977 – Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

We all have so many varying and differing opinions when it comes to Bond, but damn, if I don't agree with a lot of the lists presented here. Also nice to see a lot of you placing 'Fury Road' as number one for the year. The National Board of Review just declared it as the best film of the year yesterday!

My list exempts Bond films and is compiled strictly of what I would deem mainstream Hollywood cinema. I needed some boundaries. It was an interesting experiment. It reminded me that some years (particularly the 80s) were particularly rich in choice, whereas others were pretty bereft of quality. If I were including the Bond's, 2006 would be slam dunk for CR, that year is so lacking in quality blockbusters.

    1984: Romancing the Stone
    1985: Back to the Future
    1986: Labyrinth
    1987: Planes, Trains and Automobiles

    1989: Batman
    1990: Home Alone
    1991: Cape Fear
    1992: Reservoir Dogs
    1993: Jurassic Park
    1994: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
    1995: Toy Story
    1996: Scream
    1997: The Fifth Element
    1998: The Truman Show

    2000: Unbreakable
2001: LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring
    2002: Spider-Man
2003: POTC: The Curse of the Black Pearl
    2004: Kill Bill Vol.2

I deliberately limited it to Hollywood cinema. I might do my European/World cinema list tomorrow.

I love foreign films...but most are heavily intellectual. When I want to exercise my brain, they're a good choice. When I want entertainment (mostly) I go with the mainstream stuff.

Bond trumps every year for me . I know this because I compulsively watch all of the.films over and over and over again, and always have and always will. Only original Apes and original Godfather also get regular repeat viewings, and even then nowhwere close to the Bond treatment.

As for action emphasis. My list would show more variety if it went beyond top film of year.
Such a list will generally capture my top favourite genre film.
My top 30 films from any given year would show more variety.
I particularly like a wide variety of '60s and '70s fare. Not only the two Golden decades of Bond but all cinema IMO, although the Police Academy romps of the '80s deserve special standing in comedy hall of fame.

@DaltonCraig007, still can't get over 'I Saw The Devil' and 'The Chaser,' even though I saw them both years ago. Those are some quality films.

@RC7, finally caught 'The Act of Killing' a few months ago. It's a tough watch but very good, odd, and unique.

God, don't know how you guys came up with your lists so quick. I was born in 1965, so its gonna take me a while. But I shall endeavour!
  • I just came across an interesting discrepancy which may affect a couple of people's picks in here. I had forgotten that Memento was released in the UK in late 2000, where I saw it, but it didn't come out until January 2001 in the US. So I'm reclaiming it as a 2000 movie! Updated list:

1975 One flew over the cuckoo's nest
    1976 Rocky
    1977 TSWLM
    1978 Superman
    1979 Alien-MR-Rocky II
    1980 The Shining
    1981 Thief
    1982 Star Trek II
    1983 Scarface/National Lampoon's Vacation
    1984 The Terminator
    1985 Eh...Rocky IV?
    1986 Manhunter
    1987 TLD
    1988 Rain man
    1989 Eh...LTK?
    1990 Pump up the volume
    1991 The last boy scout
    1992 Reservoir dogs
    1993 True romance/Hard Target
    1994 Natural born killers
    1995 Heat
    1996 Fargo
    1997 Boogie nights
    1998 Very bad things
    1999 The Matrix
    2000 MEMENTO
    2001 SEXY BEAST
    2002 Road to Perdition
    2003 eeesh...struggling...The Cooler?
2004 SIDEWAYS (had forgotten about this, updated after I saw it on someone else's list!)
    2005 The New World
2006 Casino Royale (with shoutout to Miami Vice)
    2007 Sunshine
    2008 In Bruges
    2009 Public enemies
    2010 Inception
    2011 Drive
2012 The Dark Knight Rises (sorry, James!)

Somewhat off topic, but...Here are the weirdest films I have ever seen. And by weird, I don't mean in a David Lynch sort of way; I mean films that have an odd combination of cast, plot, music that makes the whole thing feel disjointed and/or uneasy. Most of these are early 90s films...an era of the bizarre, imho.

    The Warriors (1979)
    Sharky's Machine (1981)
    Risky Business (1983)
The Falcon and the Snowman (1985)
    Tequila Sunrise (1988)
    The Bodyguard (1992)
    Final Analysis (1992)
    Jennifer 8 (1992)
Rising Sun (1993) (Is this not Connery playing old man Bond in a weird YOLT sequel???)
    Intersection (1994)
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
    Random Hearts (1999)
    Spy Game (2001)
    The Recruit (2003)

If I catch any of these films on TV, especially late at night, I'm usually in a funk afterward. LOL

Hmm, all right. One rises to a challenge, so... ;)

    1979 ~ Moonraker
1980 ~ The Empire Strikes Back
1981 ~ Raiders Of The Lost Ark
    1982 ~ E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
    1983 ~ Local Hero
    ...
    ...

Note: as per the thread's title, these are my favourite flicks from each year of my life, not necessarily those I consider best (although there's certainly some cross-overs).

If I had been born a year earlier this would be on there too. The only Star Wars film that I really rate, but what a movie that is ^:)^

Yes, it also happens to be one of my all-time favourite movies (there's only five or six of them on that particular list; I probaly have about a dozen in total, I'd guess).

With the benefit of hindsight, I've made one or two alterations to that list, actually. If anyone at all cares, that is.

My second list: Independent/World Cinema (Inc. Docs)

That's a cracking selection. But no Cidade de Deus? For shame; for shame. ;)
