Casino Royale
The book is intense and concise. The film feels bigger but then again, it's a 2006 high-profile Bond film, stripping a lot from the established formula but still forced to meet some of our expectations, including action and some high stakes (e.g. the attack on the airport), to be commercially interesting.
But, and this argument will come up often here, the book is a book, a spy thriller written in the 1950s and the first in the series, whereas the film had entirely different goals set for it and came from an already pretty loaded legacy. Ergo I think they both excel in their respective medium / series. I love both, with intensity. CR, both as a book and as a film, offers an almost religious experience for me as a Bond fan.

I don't disagree with you that the two mediums and/or eras cannot be compared.
However, I was more aiming at which of the two you personally enjoy more. :D

It seems that Ian Fleming outwitted Martin Campbell and Daniel Craig by two votes.

For me, it's the book again. It's my personal favourite of the novels and while the 1973 adaption certainly has its moments I'm not so extremely fond of it.

It has to be the book. It's not even a contest, really. EON's Live and Let Die ranks near the very bottom for me, just above the likes of Die Another Day and The Man With the Golden Gun.
The only thing the book doesn't have is Jane Seymour. Other than that, fascinating novel, very tense. So I'm going to go for the book.

For me, the book would have made quite a good film script. There was no reason at all to use the title for James Bond in Space. Again, the book is more my taste.
