Dear all

Veteran members may recall that our forum used to try and steer clear of posting images which were directly taken from Bond related EON / MGM / UA / Sony property. This friendly request, issued by our admins and closely ‘policed’ by the mods, always ensured that our forum would stay out of trouble with the people behind the franchise we all love. As we’d remain on their good side, our main website – still the largest and most updated Bond related hot spot online – would furthermore continue to benefit from inside information, the latest news updates, high-profile interviews and a very positive attitude towards our wonderful MI6 Confidential magazine.

In recent times, however, we have more or less released our grip on this ‘rule’, mostly because we enjoy our members’ input and their often creative, informative and funny use of images taken from Bond films. Unfortunately, we must now bring this very permissive attitude to an end, which is never a pleasant thing to do so we hope you can all understand and respect our renewed terms concerning the use of Bond related images.

1) Please refrain from posting images, snapshots, stills… directly lifted from Bond films, DVD/BR/CD/book/game/… covers and so forth. You can, however, post links to those pics.

2) Please do not post the 007 logo if directly taken from the official EON / Danjac / … material, either available on the Internet or scanned from personal Bond related collections. Personal creations of the 007 logo aren’t a problem of course and neither are links to the 007 logo.

3) Please post links to YouTube or other media channels rather than the actual video itself. It’s a small effort and it saves post space.

4) Fan creations (fan-made posters, book covers, …) are of course allowed, even if they contain copyright material, because they will most likely be given enough of a personal touch to be perfectly acceptable. However, as a rule of thumb, bear it mind that the more the creation resembles the original material, the safer it is to simply post a link rather than the fan creation itself.

5) Selfies, photographs, … of Q&A’s, meetings with Bond celebs, your personal Bond collection, movie premieres, … aren’t a problem of course – in fact, please share them with us! – even if there’s official Bond material clearly visible in the background.

Friends, we don’t want to go hyper-strict on this thing; we merely politely ask not to blatantly post copyright material (from the world of Bond). Other film franchises can be drained at will. :D In the end, we’re doing this for the benefit of the website, the magazine and our beloved forum.

    Same here, @chrisisall. I too try to always play it safe. In the end, we can post images, stills, ... as much as we desire, but by means of a link. ;-)

    Sounds all fair enough. Just one thing, if I may, with YouTube links, once posted they show up as a video to play rather than just the link. Is there a way around that?

    Yes I believe the URL tab beside the image tab stops youtube videos from becoming windowed. [ url="http://"; ] [ /url ]

    So reading between the lines (given the flagrant disregard in your final paragraph for anyone other than EON's copyright) this 'the world's most visited unofficial 007 site' is anything but.

    We can, apparently, infringe any other film company's copyright with gay abandon and that's not a problem but actually treated as a joke if @DarthDimi's smiley is anything to go by (so getting sued is clearly not the worry here) but a behemoth like EON are so petty that if a handful of people post a pic from a Bond film they will kick off??

    You have to wonder just how 'unofficial' this site is then when EON just say 'jump' and the mods say 'how high'.

    To be fair I know other forums like CBn have been warned by Eon's lawyers too in the past (also in regard to Bond fan fiction on forums) so this is nothing new.

    I will abide by these new rules of course, but I kindly suggest to all EON reps who may be reading this forum that they perhaps spend their time and effort to try and get us a Bond film sooner and with higher quality. That should really be a priority imho. Oh, and have a tighter grip on the script next time. Cheers.

    It's just.... stupid, for lack of a better word.
    I frequent another forum, where there's a general movie thread, and when Skyfall & Spectre cam out respectively, people were posting pictures left and right! Nobody gave a ****, but god forbid anyone do that on the 'official' Bond forum, lol.

    Whatevs, I'll play along.

    Mod edit: come on, folks. Read the post again. What's up with these sudden outburst of discontent?

    Uhm... you caught me with my pants down, sir. That smiley wasn't to be taken as a sign of disrespect towards other franchises so I apologize if it looked that way.

    We're a Bond forum first and foremost. Even before I joined in '05, our admins have asked - again, politely - to be careful with copyright material. There's never been any talk about Disney or WB or Fox or ... I suppose we don't post from their properties as much as we'd post from EON's so perhaps that explains the extra caution.

    Now why would you say we're not the biggest Bond forum in the world? ;-)

    Pathetic. When you look at all the struggling film makers and musicians who hardly receive a cent these days because of illegal downloads but a company like EON rolling in cash is worried about someone posting a pic on a fan forum read by about 100 people that you can find on google in half a second?

    We're hardly Kevin McClory on here are we?

    Good shout. Spend more money on screenwriters than lawyers and you might actually have a product worth protecting.

    I can understand if people were posting links to 1080p downloads of SP but shitting a brick because someone might post a still from DN that has been in the public domain for over 50 years?

    EON certainly know how to let their fans know how much they are appreciated.

    Does this mean we have to review our avatars as well, as many seem to be taken from MGM/Eon material? Surely they wouldn't be that strict. Ironically, my username is taken from the character in OHMSS - a Swiss lawyer. I wonder if Gumbolt specialised in intellectual property law. A spin-off series in the making I fancy...

    Whoa, come on, fellas, don't shoot the messenger. I don't think our discussions will be any less enjoyable if we no longer post pics but links instead. Also, yes, avatars are preferably not directly taken from MGM/Eon material. Look, just add something to it or change a shade and I'm sure it can't do any harm.

    I'm not a lawyer, I'm clueless as to how this stuff works and I don't mind admitting that. I never claimed to either. Our post wasn't meant to slam a fist on the table and make brutal demands. It is a simple and polite request, nothing more. And we pointed out that we're not going to be maniacal over this. This is not a "change that avatar or you're out" thing.

    And there's nothing stopping you from posting the links, minus the IMG tags. Someone brought up Youtube videos, they aren't a problem.

    Actually, here's a technical question.... Is EON only upset at their images being taken directly from their websites? In other words, when you normally rightclick to copy an image link do they get some sort of notification? Or if you were to instead right click and save an image, then load it onto Photobucket, for example... then it would have a whole new address and they're less likely to ever know.
    An annoying extra set of steps I admit, but could this be a loophole for still posting pics?

    No Master Dahark that would not be a loophole. The image is still the same and it is - technically - a breach of copyright. Whether you get caught is a different question. Like my username suggests, I get my beer money from legal practice so I'm pretty sure about this particular point.

    @TheWizardOfIce you were around on the old forums as well, so why the flaming discontent now? @Darth shed a light on why we should take care: the magazine and site have very good connections close to EON (or Sony, I don't know) that might get distanced if there's too much on it. And as a company caring about it's image, they're probably just concearned about the images and texts combined. It isn't like everything beeing said here is positive. And a negative comment with an official picture is one too many that can be found through Google et al.

    In my profession, it's often acceptable to post photos AND link where credit is do. At the bottom of a well formed argument, for example, one might note (Photo: Eon Productions).

    This is a forum, and people are bound to post and talk about stuff. Promotional materials like posters or stills often have tags ON the photos themselves, and legally, if it has been posted to social media, it is promotional material and free to publish anywhere.

    This is the exact thing its sounds like is being forbidden. The 007 logo exists to be shared as advertisement -- it serves no other function!

    If this is being requested of this website, I have no reaction besides that of concern for the legal rights and freedoms of this forum's managing persons. A fundamental understanding of copyright and photo distribution rights would be integral to any shared relationship with companies like Eon and Sony.

    It doesn't really make any odds to me as I hardly ever post pictures or videos.

    The question that troubles me is just how 'unofficial' is this site?

    What happens when EON's lawyers ring up and say 'we're concerned that people saying that the 3rd act of SP falls apart a bit might affect box office so if it doesn't stop we'll withdraw our good connections'?
