licence to kill: best bond film ever????

  • But he is undercover. He's pretending to be an ex British agent looking for work when in reality he's an ex British agent who's pissed off and wants to destroy Sanchez and his organisation.

I think 'undercover' would suggest that Bond has some kind of official sanction to be trying to get to the heart of Sanchez's operation. In the film Bond simply wants to kill Sanzhez and only gets accepted into his fold by mistake (once the Chinese Narcotic team get caught in the forest), its only then does Bond think it necessary to get into Sanchez's good books as he decides it gives him a second chance to get at him after his botched effort on the rooftop, so in turn Bond decides to spread the seeds of distrust in Sanchez's mind and have him tear apart his own operation therefore slowly making himself weaker but also creating a successful cover for Bond.

Fair enough it wasn't his original plan but circumstances changed and Bond came up with a better idea than just putting a bullet in his head.

I still think it counts as being undercover, it's just Bond went undercover of his own acord and wasn't sent by MI6.

Wow. A lot wrong here..Bond AGAIN compared to Jason Bourne, Dalton beating Connery, Craig tying with Pierce, and Moore beating out of last place. WOW.

Hey, stop hating Roger Moore, just create a hate thread if you want to hate him that much.

Yes, why just kill him when Bond could do a greater good (and possibly get his reinstatement) by sending his organization to Hell with him?

I DON'T hate Roger Moore, I adore him. I DO hate his Bond, mostly because it seemed he wasn't playing Bond at all most of the time...

And by the way, thanks for replying to a comment I posted a year and a half ago, mate. Little late to the party, but we saved you some tortilla chips and dip.

Ewwwue, the dip is mouldy.... :-L
  • It was refreshingly different and really the first time we see Bond express well-acted upset throughout the film. Nobody mentions how he lost his humanity when mistaking one of the ladies for a double agent in his hotel room. That was a first for Bond to show regret like that. It would have gone well with the slow part of the LALD theme: u used to say live and let live...

He was playing Bond. He was playing his version of Bond. Just like every Bond has. The only Bond to really properly stick to the book version was Dalton and even he had his fair share of one liners and comedy moments that wouldn't have been in the books.

No problem, but I have to apologize too. As @chrisiall mentioned, the dip is a bit moldy. Better down those chips without it. :-&

LTK was the first Bond movie I owned on cassette. Though because I watched it when I was in first or second grade I found parts too violent and didn't appreciated the story, so I saw it as a boring Bond movie.

Last night was the first time I saw LTK since I was young and it blew me away. All the wasted years I could've been watching this gem! I really feel like I missed out. The story was good, and the action was unbelievable. I'm not sure if my expectations were low because of my memories, but this skyrocketed to among my favorite Bond installments.
Though I don't feel like LTK was hilarious, but it had it's moments. I particularly like Q in the field.

I also feel like the film was crisp and in the scenes not featuring computers I feel like this movie aged very well. I also found it to fit in line with Craig's interpretation, and thought while watching it that LTK was everything I wanted QOS to be (I like QOS btw).

Since I began reading Bond I gained a new appreciation for Dalton, and I'm now extremely disappointed that he only had the two movies. I suppose I'll have more novels I can read to have that LTK 'feeling'. I understand that Dalton gets left out of the mix due to only having two installments and being sandwiched between both Moore and Brosnan, but I feel like more people should give this one another watch. A darker Bond is more acceptable today and I think more people will appreciate this installment now that a more serious and gadget-less Bond is mainstream.

I prefer Daylights and think it's a better overall release than License to Kill as the latter doesn't always feel like a Bond movie, but Dalton comes in with another powerhouse performance but it's simply spolied by the stupid winking fish nonsense at the end, and after such a serious adventure of all things. Great villains with Davi and Del Toro but the others didn't deliver much. Lowell was a decent Bond girl but Soto didn't get up to much. It's a great Bond release nonetheless but of course, it was to be Daltons last

Yes but it spoiled a very serious and straight faced adventure and almost jeopardized all that came before it

not to mention the irritating Soto character

Bond - 'I thought you hated that thing ?'

Lamora - 'Don't you know, Iguana's are a girls best friend'

Does the winking fish really matter, it's 5 seconds at most, it really can't ruin a fantastic film.

People forgive the winking fish but crucify the double take pigeon? Birds have rights too, you know!

I always found that getting inside the head of the pigeon was a very artistic moment, wasted on the masses.

TLD for the 'Bond" feel; LTK for a killer performance as Bond- both shine for me!

I agree with half of this in that LTK suffers from not having the Bond feel. The reason for this it seems to me is the over Americanisation (particularly the locations), TV movie production values and the score. TLD with its cold war intrigue smashes the Miami Vice feel of LTK out of the park when it comes to

SF is similar in several respects as regards not having a traditional Bond-goes-to-foil-villains-scheme plot but that does have more of a Bond feel thanks to better locations and a more Bond sounding score.

I'm going to risk some flak here by saying I find Daltons performance a bit, to avoid the word hammy lets say, theatrical. The bit where he finds Felix and Della is nowhere near as good as when he pops the balloon after Saunders and I find a lot of the time he spends scowling too much.

Dont get me wrong - its all relative - he still out acts every Rog, Brozza and half of Seans films but he just seems to layer it on a bit more than in TLD.

Really? That 1 second shot spoiled the entire film for you? The film is over - who cares?

Currently watching Licence to Kill on Bluray, this is a excellent film and more so on this format, it is certainly one of the best movies. Would have it in my top five right now. With only TB, OHMSS, FRWL and Casino Royale above it. This film certainly has improved greatly over time.

Its funny, I've just finished the audio-book of You Only Live Twice (read by Martin Jarvis). Despite the novel being a revenge story like LTK it actually reminded me more of SF. The reason wasn't so much due to some of SF being set in Japan but more the high dose of camp in each.

Parts of the novel are completely ridiculous and downright silly. There's a scene when Ride of the Valkyries is playing at the Castle of Death and it made me remember Silva's entrance at Skyfall. Also, the little stories that are told throughout the book such as the story of the Japanese bankers downing cyanide obediantly reminded me of the "rats" speech Silva gave to Bond on the island. Just seemingly random stories that have a connection to the plot.

I like LTK but this is the problem I now realise exists within it. The film is too dark and, in many respects, too "American" in its tone!

In also with @Wizard in that, as much as I like Dalton, there are a couple of scenes in LTK where I find his performance a little "iffy" and it feels like I can "see" him acting.

All I can say to you damned Daltonites is that you're totally shit wrong in thinking that LTK of TLDL are the best Bond movies ever because they simply aren't, and Dalton is far far FAR away from being the best Bond. That honor has and will always belong to Sean, and No One can deny that!!! NO ONE!!!!!!!!!!

Wow you've won me over with your brilliantly reasoned and cogent argument. Ever thought of joining the bar with debating skills like that? Although I think you might be better suited to working in one.

LTK is in my top ten, but I agree with you. That Bourne was influenced by Bond and Ludlum even gave him the same initials isn't important of course. Next time, make sure you'll be on time for the annual "Moonraker is Star Wars whine o ton."
