how QOS intro should've been

i was playing the game recently, and as much as i hated the cod-style gameplay, i loved the way they styled the intro. It opens at casino royales end, bond standing over white, when guards run up, bond sprints of, gets into a fight with the guards and eventually stops white. Then the title sequence (which is better than alicia keys version) starts, WITH A GUNBARREL, and they use the car chase FOR the title sequence

Doesn't Bond also say something awful like: "I think we should go somewhere a little more quiet to talk" Has he never heard of the word "quieter"?

That was excellent. I might pick this up now. Done much more traditionally than the film, but I feel the opening of the film was still good.

i did like the film opening but i liked this alot better. im not a fan of the cod style gameplay, but the takedowns were cool and i liked the way they played out the plot (started with QOS, midway through bond is talking to camille and the next few levels are a flashback to CR, then at the games end we pick up with QOS again). the multiplayer isn't brilliant though. overall its worth picking up.

I'd like the QoS opening very much if only they had shot it for normal folks instead of people with short attention spans.

exactly, i hated the bourne-style camerwork in the film, there's no need

i thought it worked well for the opener... it was chaotic, but you still had a sense of what was going on.....

... can't say the same for some of the other scenes in the film - though i enjoyed them, and could follow through just fine - there's no denying that it was a problem for lots of people - not just irritated Bond fans lol.

I don't view the shaky camera work of QoS as "Bourne-style" filming considering Paul Greengrass didn't magically create the style/term. I don't see the comparison. The shaky camerawork is much more pronounced in my opinion in QoS, and when it is used in TBS and TBU it is used in a very creative fashion.

    agrees...

shaky cam is an effective tool, to make the audience feel as though they are there, going through what the main character is going through - to put us in their shoes if you will...

but when it's abused - then it becomes too noticeable and distracting

PS - i also categorize a difference between just regular hand held camera work, and shaky cam - most people want to classify them as one in the same.... i don't.

Absolutely. There is a very big difference between handheld and shaky-cam.

There is also a very big difference between shaky-cam and what we saw in QOS. QOS had no shaky-cam. It was not the camera work at all, it was editing. The cameras themselves were rather steady whereas the editing was very fast paced. I feel like I'm the only one who sees a distinction.

I agree. QoS was mostly handheld, with multiple angles, and quick cuts. Bad combination.

Shaky-cam is more Star Trek (2009), where you literally have Abrams shaking the film role to get a shaky look. Its very effective in Star Trek for the violent movements of a ship under attack.

If you actually look closely at the intro sequence, you'll only notice that the shaking camera is used when two conditions are met: 1) the camera is inside the Aston Martin, and 2) the Aston takes a hit. The obvious intention is that the camera shakes so the audience feels it.

Likewise, the quick cuts are used to show the chaos of a chase. We, like Bond, never fully know what is going on. If the sequence had been filmed with long, steady shots (like Nolan did for the chase in THE DARK KNIGHT), the scene would have been much different. And I think it would have lacked the punch that the steadycam and quick cuts delivered.
    WITH A GUNBARREL
The gunbarrel was left out of the opening because it would have broken the tension too soon.

How could the gunbarrel break the tension if it opened up the film? QOS still could have began with the gunbarrel, which opens to the camera panning across the lake.

the gun barrel usually marks the start of new 007 adventure (or mission)... since this was a hold over from Casino Royale, it would've been like breaking continuity.................. at least thats how i see it....

besides, i like how Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace are bookend by the gun barrel sequence... it's a nice touch that i like....

but i hope Bond 23 returns to tradition, and has it at the beginning

  • i think they should've either had the gunbarrel the same way casino royale did or just have it back to normal. the gunbarrel to me belongs at the start of the film before the opening titles, at least in some way shape or form, so i was disapointed that QOS broke the tradition and had it at the end. at the end when everybody is getting up to leave the cinema. at the end when you stick the TV of because the films finished. see what i mean?

The quick-cut editing is all I'd change. The rest is fine by me. One shot I always did like in the PTS is when the car goes over the cliff and disappears off the screen before it stops rolling. Love the shaky look of the camera mounted on the Aston, too- especially when it comes to a stop. Don't mind the gunbarrel being at the end- it's something different. Can't say I want to see it happen again though!

Anyone who hasn't played QoS yet- I recommend it.

It's thought by many to signify the end of the reboot which is why it's placed at the end of the film.

makes sense i suppose, but i'd still have rather had it at the start

For Quantum Of Solace it was the only way it could have been done and works as a one-off due to closing a two-part film. From now on, it'll be back to where it normally is.

It's gonna be insane at the movies watching Craig walk out to the Bond theme, shoot and then PTS and so on. I'm itching for B23 so much it hurts.

So no bullet through the gunbarrel? Jk. By the way, that intro looks awesome. I'm guessing the Bond theme and the gunbarrel will be slightly different again.

    @thelivingroyale

They should not relate though. This time we've got a new beginning and some fantastic people in front of and behind the camera working on Bond 23. I think this one will be very good indeed.

i always defend DAD saying it has a good PTS, however, i still facepalm at that gunbarrel (although it would've looked AWESOME in 3d)

Because the film was clearly building up tension towards the start of the car chase. That's what the whole sweeping shot over the lake intercut with shots of Bond, the Aston and the Alfas pursuing him and the way the music stopped to let the engine note sound out were all about. A gunbarrel at the beginning would have damaged that.

I like the beginning of the PTS without the gunbarrel. The soft music building up is amazing and revs you up for the sequence.

I hate to admit this but...I don't recall a whole lot of QoS. Was the movie that bad? I know it is not nearly as good as CR but when you guys mention some scenes i just can't remember. I did not like Greene, I was not too fond of Camille, the subplot about water, oil (WTF?) Camille and that Latin American officer?? I did like agent Fields though. Maybe they should have stuck with the Mr. White, Quantum storyline rather than going off on that other stuff. :(

They did stick with the Mr. White/Quantum storyline. Mr. White was just a smaller part than the farther reaching Quantum one. If you are forgetting this much you really need to give it a reewatch. Apparently it has been a while.
