Ok now in the mine. Tuned out a bit for this entire section. But Roger getting lured down by Mayday and her death is one of the best scenes in the film.

I have been revisiting the Moore era a lot since his passing. To me, LALD and TSWLM are by far his two best, and MR his worst The problem is in ranking the others. TMWTGG, FYEO, OP, and AVTAK all have terrific moments but also have cringe-worthy stuff that drags on the overall effect of the film.

TMWTGG: Pepper. He has no business being in this film. He alone ruins the whole thing for me. LOL
FYEO: Bill Conti's score, Bibi (can't stand her), and the hockey attack.
OP: Tarzan yell; Vijay playing the Bond theme; Octopussy's female ninjas clad in red jumpsuits (really? whose idea was that?)
AVTAK: Moore's is too old; visible stuntmen;Beach Boys

At the same time, each film has redeeming qualities: Thailiand (TMWTGG), Loche's death and the monastery climb (FYEO), the train chase (OP), Christopher Walken (AVTAK).

When ranking the Bond films, these four bounce all over the place. Where as I am solid in my ranking of the other Bond actors' films, this is simply not the case with Moore. It seems to depend on the week.

Oh, what's a Bond fan to do?

Finished. Meh, very average film and a rather (b)limp send-off for Roger.

@BAIN123 Indeed. But Walken is so deliciously good in this film, I am constantly drawn to it.

    -MR
    -LALD
    -TMWTGG
    -AVTAK

The Roger Moore Bond films are very difficult for me to rank as well. I also find TSWLM to be my favourite by far, followed by LALD. AVTAK (rather than MR) is my least favourite, but the rest of them are always a chore to put in order because I like so much in all of them. I don't mind the gags at all.

EDIT: I would like to add that with the Moore, Connery & Dalton eras I don't find too much to be polarizing. I have favourable impressions of most of the films, even if I don't objectively rate some of them too high.

That's not the way I feel about the last two actor's tenures however. There are far more highs and lows within these timeframes for me, and given the length of time to get the films out, that is impacting my opinion of the franchise more negatively as time goes on.

Moonraker has one of the top scores and some of the best cinematography in the series. A far better made film than a lot of the films in the 80s.

Not for me. An obvious ripoff of SW and is far inferior most of the way.

It's goes too far into farcical comedy most certainly, but its beautifully filmed and scored.

There's a majestic larger than life quality to most of MR which elevates it for me, despite the overt comedic aspects. If viewed as pure popcorn entertainment of the highest order I think it succeeds beautifully (far better than DAD imho). However, it's not the sort of film which does well under critical appraisal.

    ...or Fleming enthusiasts.

Nonetheless, I see MR as a perfect film to watch at Christmas time as its an over-indulgent, decorative family friendly feast.

I quite agree @BAIN123. Lots of fun. Bond by way of OTT blockbuster. I actually find it timeless in a strange way.

Aspects of it are timeless, other aspects are very dated (the humour and shots of open-mouthed onlookers is very 70s and like something from Some Mothers do 'Ave 'Em).

Will continue my Rog end of 2017 marathon tonight. Coming into this latest viewing my RM rankings were

    1.) Moonraker
    2.) LALD

    3.) TSWLM

    4.) OP

    5.) TMWTGG

    6.) AVTAK
    7.) FYEO

Thinking that FYEO may surpass AVTAK on this viewing, they always flip flop. MR and OP were right at the bottom 4 years ago.

Definitely there are several dated elements, most notably the fashion but also the humour and reactions as you note. When I say timeless I'm more referring to the larger than life fantasy aspects. I'm also willing to bet that Moore, if alive and in his prime could still deliver that classic "A woman?!" line even in today's #MeToo times and get away with it. Only he could do that without causing offense.

Exactly, you can't imagine todays contemporary stars getting away with a line like that.

A couple years ago on Sir Roger's birthday I watched both FYEO and AVTAK, and interestingly discovered I enjoyed AVTAK a bit more. Lately in my Roger rankings AVTAK has risen substantially-after years of being my least favorite.
I love all the Roger films, though.

Indeed. A good deal of this comes down to MR not taking itself seriously. It was much more of a knowing wink at the audience. While DAD played it dead serious with all of the over-the-top stuff.

...and the main theme of the score is kicking in when the nasty mousetrap does its job...

John Barry must be one of the main reasons why I have fallen in love with these films.

...love the theme song, Shirley Bassey's best in my opinion.

    @JamesBondKenya

There is so much I love about it.
The black humor, the characters like Wint & Kidd, I adore Charles Gray's Blofeld and he's probably my second favorite villain after Scaramanga.
Tiffany Case, well...where to start really. A wet dream come true on all levels.
Willard Whyte, laughing my ass off...can't wait until he appears....
Hi, I'm Plenty.... really, I remember DAF as the one film with the best dialogue.
Practically every single sentence and one-liner that Connery has in this film is funny to downright hilarious or outrageously brilliant.

The score has stuck in my mind and I'm so pleased to hear it again.
The lift fight, or perhaps I should say "elevator".

Moneypenny in uniform...uh...huh.... Would you settle for a tulip?

The film is quite brutal and violent too. What a perfect mix really with all of the above.

Bambi & Thumper are merely the icing on the cake, a huge cake full of wonder, fantastical episodes in the most wonderful sets by genius Ken Adam.

I'll stop now and continue watching. Cheers.

I'm in agreement @Andi1996Ruegg. DAF is full of colourful characters, has snappy engaging dialogue, and boasts an absolutely top notch score. I'm looking forward to taking in a viewing soon (it's been a while). Enjoy!

The great Bernard Lee, nobody does it better. His facial expressions and comedic timing are a pleasure to watch.
