    Thanks for the last post.

Giant green screen would make sense in dropping in a 60's VFX background.

    Until tomorrow. Sleep well.
  • Excited to read your ongoing discussion. @laneyboggs2001 has been a great source of information for us as well. Really looking forward to this movie!

@laneyboggs2001 has been doing a great job.

Sorry, but I don't work for Warner Bros.

As production starts I'm hoping there will be more information than anyone knows what to do with.

Now I can't get that out of my head................................

  • Production to Begin on “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” for Warner Bros. Pictures

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer Star Under the Direction of Guy Ritchie

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Principal photography will begin on September 9 on Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” The film is the first to be made under filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s and producer Lionel Wigram’s new production shingle, Ritchie/Wigram Productions, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Having successfully re-imagined the classic detective Sherlock Holmes in two hit films, the pair now bring their fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series by bringing super spies Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin to the big screen.

Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin, alongside stars Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby”), Jared Harris (“Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows”), and Hugh Grant (“Cloud Atlas”) as Waverly.

“Guy and I have long loved these characters, and wanted to start from scratch with our own take and create a film steeped in the 1960s for today’s audiences,” said Wigram. “We are particularly happy about our cast, who all bring something special to the film. Henry, Armie, Alicia and Elizabeth are among the best and most exciting actors of the next generation. In addition, we are thrilled to be working with Hugh Grant, who we have known and been fans of for many years, and Jared Harris, who did such a great job for us as Moriarty.”

Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

The screenplay is written by Ritchie and Wigram, who also serve as producers. John Davis (“Chronicle”) and Steve Clark-Hall (“RocknRolla,” the “Sherlock Holmes” films) are also producing. David Dobkin is executive producer.

Ritchie’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes two-time Oscar®-nominated director of photography John Mathieson (“Gladiator”), production designer Oliver Scholl (“Jumper”), editor James Herbert (the “Sherlock Holmes” films), Oscar®-nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston (“Lincoln”) and Oscar®-winning key makeup and hair designer Sarah Monzani (“Quest for Fire,” upcoming “Edge of Tomorrow”).

Filming will take place in England, with location filming also in Italy, in Rome and Naples.

A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

As much as I love the Craig era Bonds, I'm really looking forward to a stylish, 60's era, cold war driven spy flick.

Grant seems to youngish for the role if Waverly.

Anyway, noooooo! I've been championing Harris as a Bond villain for ages, ideally for Bond 24 and now it looks like it'll never happen.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to this movie, makes the wait for Bond 24 all the more tolerable.

http://screenrant.com/man-from-uncle-movie-synopsis-cast-start-date/ Some of our readers have taken issue with the decision to award Henry Cavill with the “Rising Star” title in our Summer 2013 Movie Awards, but the actor – formerly known as Henry VIII’s “Bro” Charles on The Tudors and abs man Theseus in Tarem Singh’s Immortals – has cemented his place as the newest onscreen incarnation of Superman, thanks to his performance in Man of Steel; meaning, he’ll be appearing in the sequel (featuring Batman) and potentially future DC shared universe installments, like Justice League, in the years to come.

In case that wasn’t enough, a few months ago Cavill replace Tom Cruise in what could wind up becoming a successful classic TV show-turned movie franchise relaunch, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. The movie reboot, based upon the TV series that ran from 1964-68, was going to pair Cruise opposite Social Network (cough, and Lone Ranger, cough) star Armie Hammer, before Cavill took the former’s spot in the cast.
Man from U.N.C.L.E. will retain the basic setup from the original series, where two agents – American CIA employee Napoleon Solo (Cavill) and Russian KGB man Illya Kuryakin (Hammer) – must overlook the longstanding tensions between their respective countries, in order to work together at the height of the Cold War in the early 1960s. Here is the official synopsis for those characters’ big screen outing, from the WB press release:
Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.
The optimistic spirit and metaphor for international cooperation that’s inherent to the Man from U.N.CL.E. premise – which pits the titular fictional organization against the aforementioned “criminal organization” known as T.H.R.U.S.H. – seems to have been carried over in the reboot. That ought to be encouraging news, for the longtime fans who’ve been concerned about the original TV show’s thoughtfulness being tossed out – following director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (Side Effects) being replaced – now that Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie is overseeing the movie instead.

Here’s the official rundown of Ritchie’s collaborators behind the camera on Man from U.N.C.L.E. (which includes a couple of his old friends from other productions):

Ritchie’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes two-time Oscar®-nominated director of photography John Mathieson (“Gladiator”), production designer Oliver Scholl (“Jumper”), editor James Herbert (the “Sherlock Holmes” films), Oscar®-nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston (“Lincoln”) and Oscar®-winning key makeup and hair designer Sarah Monzani (“Quest for Fire,” upcoming “Edge of Tomorrow”).

Filming on Man from U.N.C.L.E. is scheduled to begin next week on September 9th, 2013 (at the time of writing this), with Ritchie taking his cues from a script draft that he penned with Ritchie/Wigram Production partner and Sherlock Holmes producer Lionel Wigram. Principal photography will take place in England, as well as Rome and Naples in Italy, so the globe-trotting feature should have an international flavor along the lines of the Mission: Impossible franchise (albeit, with Ritchie’s flashy moviemaking style).

Armie Hammer (sans mask) in Disney’s ‘The Lone Ranger’

Lastly, the main cast includes Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Hugh Grant (Cloud Atlas) and Jared Harris (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones). You may recall that the latter worked alongside Ritchie and Wigram on the sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, where Harris played the nefarious Professor Moriarty.

The film boasts quite the solid roster of rising talent and seasoned acting veterans, all things considered; that is, despite the fact that its leads are coming off both the most successful franchise reboot and least successful property re-launch of the 2013 Summer Movie Season, respectively. Will Cavill and Hammer offset one another, giving rise to… um, the most adaquately-successful movie reboot of 2014/2015?

    _____
  • re: Hugh Grant's age: he turns 53 on Monday (when the movie starts filming). At that point, he will be seven years older than Will Kuluva who played Mr. Allison (the original U.N.C.L.E. chief), whose scenes were re-filmed but who appeared in the movie To Trap a Spy.

Six days and counting....(Diamonds Are Forever joke)

OK, I'm probably reading too much into this, but in this post, the author says Jared Harris is playing a character named Sanders.

    http://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/jared-harris-boards-guy-ritchies-man-uncle/

But, in the photo that accompanies the post, Harris almost resembles George Sanders, who played villain G. Emory Partridge in two episodes of the original show.

The press release doesn't give a name for Harris's character. And Partridge didn't work for Thrush in the show (though was a contractor for Thrush in the second of his two appearances).

Not basing this on any inside knowledge whatsoever. And I'm probably wrong.

And so, the Ian Fleming connection starts.

    From Chicago Examiner:

"The Man From U.N.C.L.E." will re-imagine the popular 60's television series of the same name. The series centered around secret agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, played by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. Bitter rivals from the CIA and the KGB, the two are forced to team up when an international criminal organization looks to reek havoc. Viewers followed these employees of U.N.C.L.E through 105 episodes of intrigue spanning just over three years. According to Wikipedia, Ian Fleming contributed to the show's original concept, so much so that it was originally titled Ian Fleming's Solo.

Let's hope this will be better then the horrible AVENGERS movie with Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman & Sir Sean Connery. One of the worst movies of 1998... Guy Ritchie dleivered good with his two SHERLOCK HOLMES movies, so this might actually turn out to be good. I remember that in the 1990's Tarantino talked about doing this for the big screen, but then it never became true...

Just adds to a growing list (and this isn't comprehensive):

Also, the home base of the U.N.C.L.E. movie is Warner Bros. Leavesden, a studio that was originally constructed from a Rolls Royce factory for production of GoldenEye because Pinewood was booked. Warner Bros. acquired it years later.
  • Filming began Friday, Sept. 6. A picture (albeit with the leads having their backs to the camera) has emerged. A copy of the picture is here:

Yes it does look good! But everything Uncle is uber cool!

The movie I think might inspire career-minded young men and women to pursue careers with the United Network Command, which of course is real. After all, the organization was thanked for its cooperation in the closing credits of every TV episode.
If I like the look of this film, and I'm thinking I will, I may invest serious cash in Uncle inspired wardrobe.
Cavill has found a real Solo facial expression. He's been studying Vaughn I think.

A twitter from one of the suppliers indicates that there will be a Grand Prix racing sequence in the film, a la "The Girls of Nazarone Affair".............. That's something Bond has never done.

Just noticed that laneyboggs2001 has even more info on this.
