The Wire. Again, I'd heard great things, bought the set used/secondhand, and turned it off after a few episodes. Fortunately I was able to sell it on for what I paid for it. Later on someone told me I should have stuck with it. Oh well.
Utter garbage, a lame excuse to see soft porn.
Not one likable character and the most overrated series in TV history.
TWD
First season was literally bloody fantastic. Since then it's utter garbage, a daily soap with the occasional zombie popping up.
Two of my favourite TV series ever (along with Breaking Bad). Sopranos is a thematically rich series. I've watched it in its entirety three times. The imagery, performances, dialogue and symbolism. The preoccupation with death is haunting. The first two series are more straight forward arcs to do with Tony and his mother, while the third series bridges nicely between this traditional storytelling and the more enigmatic symbolism that hangs over the fourth season until its final episode. These episodes bring the existential crisis to the fore. And it is funny as hell. The family dynamics are wonderful - and Gandolfini and Edie Falco are masterful on screen. Just writing this makes me want to watch it all over again.
The Wire is outstanding. Every series peels away further layers of the American system as represented by Baltimore. Never has a city ever had a more singular, sustained and in depth representation of its infrastructure. David Simon is a fiercely intellectual, passionate and most importantly insightful creator. The concept of how every human belongs to an institution whether they are a drug dealer, a police officer, a dock worker, a teacher or a politician - it is inescapable and that institution will sacrifice its own members, ethics and even its own rules in order to survive. It's a powerful and sometimes exhausting series with an authentic feel and low on the dramatics or predictability.
Breaking Bad
Friends
Top Gear (2002-)*
*When it was given a makeover as a light entertainment show.
When was that?
When it was brought back in 2002. I remember the show back when it was more nuts 'n bolts. I watched the 2002 show for a few years/series, but once the jokes (Clarkson "accidentally" crashing into May) started wearing thin, I backed away from the show. It's been a few years since I watched TG, even the departure of Clarkson wasn't enough to tempt my interest. Sounds like it is more of the same, just with a new team. And messrs Clarkson, May & Hammond on Amazon of all places, is a match made in heaven.
You got all my favourites there...
My brother keeps begging me to watch it, but I just never see the hype. Exact same thing with The Wire.
So you like the Amazon show? It's basically Top Gear.
@Major_Boothroyd you give a good rundown of The Wire (along with Six Feet Under as one of two or three best shows ever produced) I must admit I did not care for the 3rd series. It just seemed to be trudging along and then season 4. I was blown away. I think a lot of season 3 was setting up several pieces and characters for the brilliant 4th Season. Damned good programming.
It took me years to sit down and watch GoT ( I rented the first season from the local library and I was hooked) I have never cared for the medieval/fantasy shows and that was why I resisted it for so long but it is addicting. Someone called it a grown up Lord of the Rings while someone else said it was an excuse for soft porn, whatever you call it the political intrigue and jockeying is what got me hooked. As for the many Emmys, hell they spend 5 million per episode! for that kinda money it'd better run away with all the awards. :))
Yes regardless of the settings and action, the characters are compelling enough to invest into
Nooooo no no no. I wouldn't give Amazon a penny. From what I have seen of the so called "Grand Tour", it looks like Top Gear (2002-) in all but name, but with apparently more money behind it.
So are advertisements. That fits.
It has classy production qualities, excellent acting, and the characterizations are very impressive, in depth and real. I always get lost in it.
I got thru about three seasons of Breaking Bad and just could't take any more of it.
Mad Men: I watched season 1 then dropped it. Years later I went back and got caught up via DVD rental and Netflix and I have to agree with @bondjames. the show is well written, acted and a delight to watch. Basically covers the 1960's and how the country was changing. I liked the relationships between the characters and said a nice goodbye when it ended.
There are many series that are undoubtedly that are great but I just do not have the time to keep following so it has to be really special. And then I buy the bd box-set of dvd to watch it in my own time-frame.
And some like the Walking dead, remakes series generally I walk away from because I am not really interested to begin with. I stick mostly with stuff I like the promise of which keeps me occupied enough.
Some shows interest me more and other less, I prefer to spend time with the more aspect, like books when I do not enjoy them I move on to the next book. So much choice and not enough time in a lifetime.
Beauty and The Beast. After more then 3 years there start with second season on there 3th mother channel of lead channel whyle first season be on the 2th mother channel. Iam not so sjure or going to watch it. 3 years is long, inspecialy with a litle bit simalar tv series that i follow who is more intresting.
Other series who are given up, not by me but the channel or/and the studio:
Burn Notice. First it take already whyle before there contuned with 3th season. Also only first three seasons are silenced released on dvd.
Levarage. After second season. Only first season is released and re-released on dvd.
In the mean time Dutch studio A Film (Lord of The Rings, Mad Men) is gone since 2014 and previously there be new owner of Levarage (CSI go back Universal, i wish Leverage too.) On this moment we also wait on the final season of Mad Men. Between the 5th and 6th season there was 2 years too, NPO (Dutch Public Channel) must save money. With the 7th season the series is taken over by another Dutch studio but who making a mess from BD release. Shame, because i was considering to buy complete collection.
Arrow. After Season 3. There make a bit mistake with vergot to screen a episode or two.
The channel confirmd no Season 4.
Boardwalk Empire. After Season 2. In mean time there spoiling Season 3 and even Season 4 too in tv guide with showing two chacters who mabey/mabey not die in second season. This, the not very goodnumbers and possible Warner reject the series like there did later with Arrow. I am afraid same thing with happen with The Last Ship.
Gotham. This R-rated series quite after a couple of episodes then there try it again and totaly faild after 7 episodes. I not even try to watch it and mabey should happy with that.
Overall it be dificult to get in to tv series with to much series, the over hype of some channel where be on, no contuned or/and Warner who only think about money. It created less intrest or even hate out of shame.
