Firstly, if the mods object to this being its own thread, please feel free to close it.

So, an idea came to mind yesterday. As most of us will know, Michael Apted stated that he originally intended for the Bilbao bank sequence to be the original pre-title sequence of the film. However, after previewing the film and receiving lackluster audience reactions, he eventually pulled the plug on the idea and went on to combine both the Bilbao scenes and the MI6 explosion/boat chase into one long (maybe overlong) pre-title sequence. In knowing this, I had decided to experiment with reshaping the first few scenes of the film to match Apted's initial plan. The result was a first act that flowed undeniably better than the final cut. Here it is:

P.S. Sorry for the fact that it's on Dailymotion. YouTube wouldn't allow it.

Good job! Lacklustre audience reaction my butt. That version seems better.

Looks good. I wouldn't mind a short and effective PTS in the future.

Bloody good job! Excellent transitions! This is how I've always wanted the film to go. I salute you for this, @jake24. You've made a TWINE sceptic very happy.

Great work, @job24. Very nice editing.

It's an interesting edit. On one hand, I find the PTS a tad too short. It feels like something's missing. But maybe I'm just used to the actual PTS of the film. On the other hand, the scene at MI6 HQ and the boat chase do seem more appropriately placed after the titles.

The maintitle is used as bridge between boat chase and funeral scene.
After that great but exited action scene you need a break.

Are you suggesting, @M_Balje, that Casino Royale should have been cut differently too then?
  • Thanks for editing that together, @jake24. Certainly interesting to see what might have been, but ultimately they made the right choice with the final edit. The existing PTS feels much more satisfying and sets up the stakes for the film much better than the brief segment in Bilbao. One of the things I love most about TWINE is how well the film both adheres to the Bond formula while still finding ample opportunity to break free in new and interesting ways. One of those is the PTS, where the audience's appetite is wet in Spain, then we move on to Mi6 HQ with Moneypenny and M and all that usual jazz but sans main titles, and before you know it an explosion rocks the building and we realize the PTS has only just begun. Perfect. Furthermore, I don't like the idea of following the main titles with a lengthy action sequence. That should be the part of the film where we're settling comfortably into our seats and discovering where the story is going to take us IMO. I'm not a fan, for instance, of how the parkour chase butts right up against the main titles in Casino Royale. It feels like we're getting a second PTS all over again when we should be getting into the story proper. I have similar feelings about the Sienna foot-chase in QoS.

It's also interesting to note that had the Thames chase followed the main titles, it would have been longer. They edited it down to bring the PTS to an appropriate length.

@Some_Kind_Of_Hero I think the original, unedited cut lasted for something like 18 minutes.
  • That would have made for quite the bloated PTS. I think the chase plays at a fine length as it is anyway.

If you ask me, yes. After the explosion. Cut Dryden complete and starting with Gunbarrel and Madagascar. In another topic somebody made alternate cut of Madagascar scene with some less action. http://www.mi6community.com/index.php?p=/discussion/16016/casino-royale-the-big-picture-fanedit-of-cr

Back in time i was and stil not happy with Casino Royale. Then i wil cut possible more then now.

Interesting and well done alternate edit for TWINE; however, I prefer the final edit. The PTS for TWINE in my opinion works as a fine as a prologue for the film.

The PTS for CR works perfectly for that film. Changing it would compromise the storytelling for the sake of a run of the mill opening. Sorry the filmmakers knew and understood the story they were telling with that edit. My opinion of course

One thing I will add for Arnold fans is I had forgotten how nice it was to watch a Bond film with an actual Bond score.

I prefer the final edit of TWINE. Also the PTS of CR makes thematic sense - the whole film is about Bond going from that moment to 'Bond, James Bond' at the end with White. Although I did always think that in a parallel universe where they weren't rebooting and still didn't have the rights to CR, the parkour chase would have been the PTS.

I will concede to preferring @jake24's cut.
