Damn you Arrow Video and your Festive Sale! Been very restrained and only got Caligula - The Ultimate Edition (1979) and Kinji Fukasaku's Cops vs Thugs (1974). Could have bought so much more…

I've been itching to see Caligula for years now, but it seems so incredibly divisive.

I've not seen it since it first came out on VHS, and pretty sure it was heavily cut, so looking forward to seeing it again.

I saw Caligula in the cinema, a few years later. It has a lot of great scenes. McDowell is perfect in the part.

I saw it in the theatre in the early 80's- the "R" rated cut. Not bad.

Got all save for Frontios. The Gunfighters is a bit of an odd one. Some great watching there though.

I'm not a fan of Westerns, so I don't know what i'll make of The Gunfighters.

I'm raiding HMV's stock. :D Now is a good time to snap up Classic Who on DVD. Single stories are around £6.99, two packs between £11.99 to £14.99 and triple packs around £17.99.

Got Dunkirk as a Christmas gift, which was awesome. I plan on ordering a copy of The Room; immediately became a guilty pleasure of mine.

In addition to a few others, I got the new 4K Arrow presentation of Ronin for Christmas. It’s been years since I’ve seen this film. So many years. I can’t wait to rewatch it. And Arrow is looking like they’re ready to give Criterion a run for their money in terms of presentation!

Not bought, but had as a Christmas present, two additions to my ever-growing collection of Arrow Video releases. Coffy (1973) dir. Jack Hill, Pam Grier as a badass vigilante; and Manic Cop (1988) dir. William Lustig, 80's slasher! Not seen either of these films, so should be some interesting viewing.

@Lancaster007, caught Coffy alongside some other blaxploitation stuff super young while surfing some more adult oriented film channels. I partially count Ms. Grier as being just as responsible as certain Bond women for making me into a man. Foxy movies.

Proper? Is it not true 4K?

I don't actually mind if it's really 2K or somewhere in between. I actually don't own anything on 4K and don't have a 4K screen, so I'm happy with Blu-ray for now. I feel like I've upgraded a large enough portion of my collection to Blu-ray over the past couple years anyway.

It's merely scanned in 4K, whereas the resolution is still 1080p and not native 4K. Several other blu-ray releases have received the same treatment, such as The Thing. Either way, 1080p or not, that version of Ronin is likely the best one out there.

For anyone that's a blu-ray purchaser and expecting to make the jump to 4K eventually, why not begin now? Release day 4K's are typically only $5 more than the blu-ray version, so you're pretty much proofing your collection for the future when you do make the plunge.

Many blu-rays can be had for under $10 where 4K tend to run in the $20-$35 range. So there is still a fair difference there. But I see your point. I'm now building my Criterion collection strictly on blu-rays, but I can recall back in the day debating between DVD and blu-ray on one title that's now out of print and going for the DVD because I could play it on my laptop. Fortunately however I don't mind too much having it on DVD instead of blu-ray, as Criterion DVDs are still pretty high quality. Sometimes you just need to take these things on a case by case basis.

Maybe I'll enjoy blu-ray until 4K drops to blu-ray prices (same as how blu-rays have now dropped to DVD prices) and then go in for 4K. ;)

Example: My DVD of Armageddon was good, my Criterion was a lot better, my bluray, while higher resolution, totally messed up on the colour (it looks all greenish like The Matrix)...
So yeah, all releases are not created equal.

That's why I said "release day 4K's", not 4K's in general. You're right if we're speaking about the latter category, but on release day (and a few weeks after), they're usually only $5 more.

Now, if we're talking some older titles when the format first began, then yes, we're talking $5-10 blu-rays versus $20-30 4K's.

Future proofing is only worth it with the aforementioned release day movies. For $5, why not? Still saves you more than waiting years and double dipping.
