  I had the toy car of the XJS with a Saint logo on the front (only a sticker,soon fell off) and i loved it....gone now,somewhere.....bloody divorce,everything goes missing or deliberately stolen.

  Like with Bond, The Saint managed to continue after the first actor.
  
  If less successful. Ian Ogilvy was The Saint in 1978 and 1979.
  
  The show has become sort of a cult show nonetheless I think.
  
  Luckily it got released years ago in Australia on DVD in 2004.
  
  
  
  Some years later there was another release on DVD, this time from the UK, in 2007 I think.

  I followed the show when it came out, but always thought it could not compare to the Roger Moore era.

  Ogilvy has effortless style. I'd have taken him over Dalton any day.
  
  It's been a long time since I've watched this show even though I have the box set. I must get to it sometime. The score is just superb (not just the title track, but more the incidental music). 70's UK shows have incredible scores.

  The main difference between the Moore and Ogilvy Saintly outings is that Roger Moore's series were very studiobound and on more than one occasion I find that jarring. Ogilvy's Saint however feels far more the globetrotter as a lot of episodes have been filmed on location in Europe and have a very international cast and you feel the locations.
  Too bad that "raise the Titanic" sank any chances of more Ogilvy saintly outings.
  
  Sadly Simon Duttons Saintly movies are mostly hurt by average to poor scripts, even if the movies all have their great moments. The Australia episode is actuallly quite fun while "The Blue Dulac" harks back to the older days of the bookish Saint.

  Didn't know that about "Raise The Titanic". I'd heard that the extensive location shooting made "Return" very costly which contributed to no series 2.

  I was locked into Moore's Saint, Ogilvys Saint played on TV when I was young though never got into it. All I remember was the white Jag...

  IIRC the Dutton Saint episodes were heavily subsidised by French TV,who havent a clue about Templar,hence it was just wrong all round.

  I'm not familiar with the books, so can't comment.
  
  I must also correct my previous remark about the ability of the Umbrella Australian version to play on UK players. The Amazon page says that it will, but I noticed on my dvd copy that it is region 4, which is Australia only. I can play it because I have a region free dvd player, but I'm not sure if it will work on a standard UK player.
  
  I'm not that big of a fan of them to be honest. They have that distinctly 80's chintzy made for tv miniseries flavour, and Dutton isn't as charismatic as Moore or Ogilvy.

  Was Ogilvy really a serious candidate for any other reason than he was Moore's successor as the Saint? Sure he was a natural to consider but I don't know how seriously Eon considered him at the time.
  
  As for the series, I enjoyed it. I discovered it back when I was becoming a big Bond and anything spy/action related fan. CBS TV in the U.S. would broadcast repeats of The Avengers, the original Saint as well as the New Avengers and Return of the Saint in their late night slots. Avengers and Return were actually shown back to back on Friday nights.
  
  Sadly, the series has never been released in Region 1. I'd definitely own it if it were.

  I wish it would be released in Region 1. I haven't seen an episode of ROTS since 1989. I loved it and always thought Ogilvy might have made a dashing Bond. More of a Pierce GE era physical type. Also I loved his work in Witchfinder General and And Now The Screaming Starts among others.

  I also enjoyed Ogilvy's guest stint on the final series of The Avengers. He was kind of a younger, more mod Steed and was a perfect complement to Tara King in that episode. Kind of a New Avengers before there was one.

  If anyone remembers the Brosnan Diet Coke Bond themed commercials from the late '80s, Ogilvy did one in the early '90s. Very similar and he was wearing if I can recall a white dinner jacket. Gave an indication what he might have looked like had he been cast as Bond instead of, say, Dalton. Wish I could find Ogilvy commercial that online.
