Any black friday deals for folio this year? They usually do 'free shipping' at this time.

I’m considering ordering some (or all?) of these but they’re obviously quite expensive especially when you throw in shipping to the US. Does the Folio Society ever do like 50% off sales the way Criterion Collection does, or some other promotion that makes sense waiting for?

Good question, ultimately I’d like to do the same thing; have three of them currently.

Maybe once they’re all out they may do some sort of collection?
  • I’m also looking to buy all of these editions, though not all at once because that would cost myself a kidney.

I’ve never seen 50% so I wouldn’t hope for that... I have seen down like $10 a piece, but it’s been a long time since they did that. They did occasionally use to do free shipping after so much spent, which ends up being a very good savings if you’re in the U.S.
  • Hmmm I guess I’ll hold off for a bit and see if they offer at least some sort of free shipping promotion.

They generally have free shipping on Black Friday or if you order 5 or more books.

I just checked and unfortunately it still only offers the paid shipping options no matter if I add 5 or even all 10 Bond books.

    It isn’t Black Friday.
But if anything does come up it would be a great opportunity to pick up the whole collection.
The best option I’ve found is to buy them one by one each month or so, then it gives you a chance to go through each new one, revisiting the story and looking at the art. If you buy the whole collection at once you run the risk of letting them just be a collection rather than a series of great books. ;)

Oops I thought they meant you get free shipping on BF *or* your order 5 or more. Oh yeah I’d totally prefer to buy them one at a time like that, but the $30 shipping is a total killer. I’d end up spending 50% more on an already pricey collection if I got them that way.

True, that’s a good point about the shipping. I’ve been lucky to get a few as gifts but yeah, I suppose you’re right, the all-at-once approach is probably correct.

I held off the first couple years these came out because of the price.... once I bit the bullet I’ve never regretted it. I love the books (Fleming) so much, to get them in nice hard back with beautiful illustrations, I figure it’s a once in lifetime thing... no publisher after the Fleming era ever did as nice reprints as the originals, so this is really something to collect. I think a lot of people may regret not getting them if/when they discontinue them.

It’s been smart (or happenstance with the illustrations) to have these come out 2 a year because it’s makes the cost easier to swallow (in spite of the shipping). And it’s also been a joy to look forward to each new release and wonder which one it will be. Also, VERY helpful to have these to look forward to in the long wait for NTTD.

We can probably start the speculation for the next one since I think it’s due late March?

That was my original thinking with regards to the cost of the books individually. Sure with shipping each individual one you're spending more, but are you more likely to spend a huge amount once to get them all? Or $100 every 6 months to collect them as you go? It's basically simple financing.

I received Thunderball as a Christmas present! OHMSS would’ve been more appreciated but that’s okay! XD

Early March more likely, first week usually. I hope the pandemic won't delay anything.

I think it will be YOLT, at least I hope it will be, just to complete the Blofeld trilogy.

Yes I assume YOLT too, though if they finally dropped in FYEO, I’d be just as happy.

@SomethingThatAteHim Have you purchased any books from them before?

All the emails and brochures that I receive from them advertise five or more free shipping. Plus you receive a free diary valued at $35 if you by something in Nov - Dec.

Nope, I’ve never purchased anything from them before.

Any part of the Blofeld Trilogy is great! ;) I have OHMSS but not Thunderball, so that's on my list of must-gets before the others, and then hopefully the crown jewel of the series, YOLT, comes next!

Me too. I’ve bought the few which haven’t been presents.

This, 100% this. I have regretted not buying some other things in the past, thinking “I’ll get that later” and then kicking myself when it’s unavailable. I’m not allowing that to happen to me over Fleming’s novels.
  • Yeah I certainly don’t want to miss out on these. I have a lot of the Fleming books in old signet paperbacks which I love the covers to, but they obviously aren’t particularly nice quality and definitely not sturdy so it would be good to get the complete collection in a more premium format. Might buy them in batches of 4 or 5 over a couple years to split the difference between spending a shitload all at once and having to pay shipping every time and taking too long to collect them that they go out of print.
  • Are they really THAT expensive just in shipping alone? Because I really want to get some of these too.

If you live in the US, the standard shipping is $30 which is almost half the cost of just one of these books, so unless you have a free shipping code or something, it makes more sense to me to buy several at once to minimize repeating that expense if you plan on collecting them all.

Personally I couldn’t justify spending nearly $100 per book no matter how nice they are. 65 is already pretty steep.
  • I received a $20 off voucher from them so I went ahead and ordered the first five (chronologically) books. Excited to get them!

Awesome! How did you get the voucher?
  • There’s a link to sign up for the digital catalogue that also gives you a welcome coupon (so maybe you can’t get it if you’ve bought books from them before?). The sign-up appears to be broken right now since I didn’t get either a digital catalogue or coupon from it, but a quick customer support email got one to me.

Nice... might have to try this.
  • My order arrived! They’re even more lovely in person, I’m happy to say. Of the first five I’ve actually never read Casino Royale or Diamonds are Forever, so I’m excited to come to those ones fresh.

Excited for you! Two great novels! Is it the first five that you bought all at once?
