  I think partly because they couldn’t just have a shot of his crotch. Had to make it more interesting. Adding the white cat seemed more mysterious. More eccentric. Very iconic!

  I think the thought was that it gave the camera (and the audience's eyes) something to stick to, as Blofeld couldn't be revealed right out of the gate.
