No, I would put that last, but I still like it. I prefer Temple of Doom.
When you say last are you including KOTCS above Last Crusade?
Yes, I would put that second.
That is indeed controversial
Just having your own opinion is usually controversial, about anything.
Very true indeed. One man's DaVinci is another man's tennis girl scratching her arse
;)
Hate 'E T.'!!
😁 Ah sorry mate. It wasnt popular at the time, or even now, to dislike E.T.! But i just didnt enjoy it. Annoying brat kids, Spielbergs direction (shooting low to express things from the kids point of view!) i found irritating, And E.T. himself, a giant turd with arms and legs, didnt find him endearing at all!!
I did like John Williams score, but he can do no wrong in my book!
Haha!
Anyone seen 'Duel' with Dennis Weaver? Havent seen it in years, but i do remember it been really good.
'Raiders of the Lost Ark" is marvellous entertainment! Holds up very well! Saw i tg in the cinema originally and saw a reissue in 70mm, which was one of the most enjoyable days in the cinema!
The sequels are very hit and miss! Mostly miss!
The most recent one was awful!
As a footnote, i remember a radio show reviewing 'Schindler's List' at the time of its release and having a relative of a Holocaust survivor on the panel describing it as "E.T. goes to Auschwitz"! Ouch!
Always interesting to hear other's thoughts on it, though. It's fascinating to me that even the most film illiterate can spot a Spielberg film within a few minutes no matter what the subject of the film is. He's a brand unto himself, and maybe the effect has been diluted over time.
That's my favorite later era Spielberg film as well. Even so I haven't had the desire to purchase a Blu-ray copy for my movie library. A lot of his mainstream movies like JAWS I've seen so many times I rarely have the urge to watch lately including RAIDERS.
I did recently discover an excellent Columbo episode he directed.
On another note, Jack Cassidy always played such a great villain in all three of the episodes he appeared in.
His TV work was great. DUEL is one of my favorites and as I recall was made for television in the States, but released theatrically in Europe.
Jack Cassidy was a great Columbo villain! I recently bought the complete series DVD set of COLUMBO and have been enjoying revisiting the show. I love it!
Funny thing, one of the least popular episodes, NO TIME TO DIE, I actually really enjoyed in spite of it departing from formula.
Yes, that opening shot is very memorable – and I agree, Jack Cassidy was perfect in all his appearances. I like his character in Murder By The Book the most out of the three.
I'm yet to watch Duel. Looks interesting though.
I haven't seen Munich actually. Will put it on my "to watch"-list.
Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, and E.T all masterpieces.
Temple of Doom is great! I saw it in the cinema on first release, I was gripped throughout.
Crystal Skull is a mess but it’s actually weirdly watchable. Every time it’s on TV I get sucked into it, and end up watching the whole thing.
I must try and get a copy of 'Duel'.
"Close Encounters of the Third Kind!" hasnt aged well, imho, recent viewing of it I found it hard going!
1. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
2. Empire of the Sun
—big space here—
3. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
4. Saving Private Ryan
5. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade
6. Raiders of the Lost Ark
7. Catch Me If You Can
8. Schindler’s List
9. Lincoln
10. Jurassic Park
(Guilty pleasure: Always. It’s absolute pablum, pure maple syrup, but I love Holly Hunter, and I love Audrey Hepburn in her tiny final role as a welcoming face to the afterlife. I don’t really believe in an afterlife, but if her beautiful smile is the first thing to greet me after I die, I’m totally cool with that.)
I also love Jaws, Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom and The Post. Call ‘em honorable mentions. I still need to see Munich so this may change.
Munich, in that sense, is much more multi-layered and perhaps that's why I enjoy that one more than his other work. To a lesser extent, that applies also for Jaws.
This is what i have (* BD ** VHS and DVD)
Jurassic Park 1&2 **
Minoty Report
Catch Me If You Can
The Terminal
War Of The Worlds ''2005''
Munich
Artificial Intelligence *
Jaws *
Empire Of The Sun *
Bridge of Spies *
Amistad * ( + DVD)
Indiana Jones 1-3 (3)
Indiana Jones 4 *
The number 3 with 10 movies are Ridley Scott and (actualy 7 movies/5 episodes over 3 Seasons of tv series) Martin Campbell.
Couple of weeks a go i watched Cowboys and Aliens (extented version) produced by Spielberg and like it more then War of The Worlds because you get to see the aliens. Disapointed but not dislike it, that can't be said about Super 8. That was very bad.
That he waited so long with sequel of Tin Tin and possible a 3th movie i don't understand. He and Peter Jackson and Sony should have agreed he direct the next two too because Peter Jackson has no time.
Thanks for not putting that stupid retro tag on it and called it "Indiana Jones and..." with that film. I also still consider Star Wars to be Star Wars and not episode IV and all that.
Nearly 40 years on, I still consider Raiders one of the greatest cinema rides of my life. Went in knowing it would be good and came out just blown away. When FYEO came out a few weeks later, it just couldn't compete as far as fun experiences. It also never loses anything on subsequent viewings throughout the years.
Temple of Doom seems to have risen for a lot of people over the years. My first viewing I thought it may have surpassed Raiders but over the years it has lost points. Great action, but Willie Scott is just too annoying and distracting. Between that character and Stacey Sutton from AVTAK, writers sure didn't have a good handle on female action film characters in the mid '80s.
That's why I like Last Crusade so much more. Willie is just a tag-along character while Henry is family, upping the stakes with his part of the adventure. Plus, Indy and Nazis are the right combination.
But let me commend you for having EMPIRE OF THE SUN as your number two. A brilliant, brilliant film, in spite of the fact that the script heavily Americanises the original novel in order to cowtow to the American movie-going public. But if it hadn't caused me to read the novel afterwards, I wouldn't even know.
Couldn't agree more with this.
Films like The Vampire Lovers, the later Dracula's and Blood from the Mummy's Tomb are all amongst my favourite Hammer films.
