The controversial opinion I came in to post: I just watched The Two Jakes for the first time, and I think I prefer it to Chinatown...
Nice to see some love for THE TWO JAKES. I love both films. In some ways the sequel feels more traditional noir to me than CHINATOWN. I should watch them back to back sometime then gauge.
I find it boring.
Me too. Saw it at the cinema on it's release. I was distinctly underwhelmed.
Crimson Tide now that's an excellent Submarine movie.
Now that really is controversial (although it's of course up to you). It's the only Jack Ryan film we've watched about seven or maybe even ten times, and it's the greatest submarine movie this side of Das Boot, which is, however, of a somewhat different (realistic) category. But is Red October boring? Not a second for me.
Das Boot gets boring - deliberately - especially if you watch the TV miniseries version of over five hours instead of the much shorter cinematic versions, and I accept that as a tool to make the viewer feel the dragging ennui of the crew on their mission. So yes, in that case I think that intended boredom is indeed an asset to understand the protagonists.
But Red October? Not at all. Suspense all over, even on a repeated viewing when everyone in front of the screen knows how it's going to end. Great acting, great score. One of the best movies of its kind. And with Sean Connery in one of his best non-Bond roles.
Here's my Ryan ranking:
1) Red October
2) Patriot Games
3) Clear And Present Danger
4) Shadow Recruit
5) The Sum Of All Fears
I've never read any of the Clancy novels (zero interest in them) and I haven't seen the TV series either. Whatever Michael B. Jordan stumbled into with Without Remorse, I still haven't figured out, but that film is boring, to say the least--boring and terrifyingly outdated, despite Jordan's charisma.
I have played the first three Splinter Cell games, though. That's how far my affection for Clancy reaches.
And I don't dance.
I find the theory that Connery is actually playing Bond in THE ROCK baffling.
Losers whine that THE ROCK is an unofficial Bond film..........winners go home and watch THUNDERBALL instead.
It's just a fun, silly fan theory.
I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously.
Still not seen the Two Jakes. Anything with Nicholson is a must watch.
I was lucky enough to see The Two Jakes at a very limited cinema release. I like it quite a bit, but it's no Chinatown
I think some of the effects shots in PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE look pretty good.
I think I prefer low budget miniature work of the 1950s to bad CGI of the 1990s and 2000s.
Absolutely mate! 'Chinatown' is a classic! 'The Two Jakes' not so much ( but it soes have the lovely Madeleine Stowe in it...whatever happened to her?)
Reminds me of some critic saying the jump into hyperspace from John Carpenters low budget 'Dark Star' was more impressive than 'Star Wars'!
Plan 9 from Outer Space is enjoyable. As for the special effects: as poor as they are, there’s more heart and fun in them, compared to certain other movies and director’s egos made today. Cough James Cameron, cough, pushing computer technology “forward.” Also telling poor people how to live his rich lifestyle. Ed Wood could at least be fun, and not domain you worship his work.
Agreed.
After hearing about her going door to door telling people how to vote, I thought my opinions of Jennifer Lawrence couldn't sink lower. Even if I have similar political viewpoints. She's just telling people to vote for Kamala Harris because she's a woman. That and the Hollywood liberals told her too. She has clearly slept with men who are no different than Trump, just for her advantage. For awhile now, I won’t say that Jennifer Lawrence is as popular as she once was. Ten years ago, she was America’s sweetheart. Now as more about her personality has come out, people are getting sick of her. She’s mean, was a muse to both Harvey Weinstein and David O’Russell (two truly hated people in more ways than one). Now, she is telling people how to vote, and she doesn’t even have half of a high school education. She left school simply because she was bored. The material that she got was considered good, not really herself. And don’t give me the Oscars excuse. Harvey Weinstein and David O’Russell arguably rigged it for her. She is a lot of what is wrong with certain “big star” names that people would assume. After Weinstein got busted people felt that she wasn’t that great. I never got her hype. The way she brags about herself as a reliable, funny girl-next-door is her biggest lie. Just ask fans who have met her. She’ll blow them off. Even Adam Sandler told her to lighten up. Rubbing her butt on scared rocks and laughing about it should have gotten her cancelled, even from an atheists’ standpoint. Not many people generally want her butt around anymore. Next to Mitch McConnell, she is Kentucky’s biggest mistake. To quote David Spade about Eddie Murphy on SNL: “Look kids, a falling star. Make a wish.” Sums Jennifer Lawrence right now. Give me Emma Stone or Saorise Ronan any day of the week over the bully that is J-Law. It seems that the Hollywood LAW is laying down on her. Just like Harvey Weinstein did with her.
Also, cinema will turn around, everything goes through hard times. Hollywood needs to take lessons in a different way. I would love to see more experimental (technically at least), get their chance to shine. I believe we will see that again. As for long movies, I have a bit of hope. Certain movies that are 2 and a half hours can draw people in. Oppenheimer and Dune Part 2 are arguably proof of this recently. They just have to take a risk and as the late Roger Ebert said: “No bad movie is short enough and no good movie is long enough.” It’s all a creative risk from the story suppliers and their customers.
All the above. Plus, JL is a turn off for me. I see her as trailer park crash, honestly that got lucky for a bit.
As for the election, I’ll say this: no one can tell how to vote. I sadly had to do some write-ins in my state. Simply because someone has been in power too long, or has no clear plan, and offers the same criticism we see every time. But I won’t talk politics here. As we’re all here to stay away from that this site. I know, I’m a hypocrite.
As for cinema, I feel that it will turn around. Fads come and go. We’ll get a cinematic experience we can all enjoy again.
Stars have as much right as anyone to spout their opinions. I don't find a star offering up an opinion any less objectionable than a powerful politician or a billionaire weighing in.
Either case, this is America and everyone is entitled to freely express their views.
My mistake. Jennifer Lawrence still bugs me.
I am not the biggest JL fan either. She forgot to smile these past 15 years.
Ow I didn't know that. Thanks, @Mendes4Lyfe.
I wouldn’t say her stardom is down, but rather she’s basically at a point that she can do whatever she likes. Those paychecks for X-MEN and THE HUNGER GAMES no doubt have her set for life.
