Better at this point to start adapting continuation novels than a "original screenplay" by Purvis and Wade. Also, RichardtheBruce, your style of how you think it should be done, is exactly how I feel it should be done! Great minds think alike!
ICEBREAKER was one of my favorite Gardner books as well. I really liked FOR SPECIAL SERVICES.
Considering how long it takes for Eon to come up with a Bond plot these days, I am baffled as to why none of the other books haven't been considered. There is a TON of plot-lines, concepts, characters, and titles that could be used in this day and age.
Apparently Gardner wasn't responsible for many of the final titles chosen by the publishers for his novels. NO DEALS, MR BOND being one he never took credit for.
I remember an interview where he said it was the best out of a very bad batch offered him.
ICEBREAKER, is a great Bond title, IMO. Same with FOR SPECIAL SERVICES, ROLE OF HONOR, SCORPIUS, and BROKENCLAW.
I haven't read many of the newer books. Got thru CART BLANCHE and liked it alright, but still preferred to read Fleming.
It’s no stretch of the imagination to think that Mathis held some contempt for Bond following the events of CR. Mathis was obviously detained and interrogated and who knows what else over Bond’s suspicion of him. We saw him tasered unconscious at the very least. They play it fairly lightly during their reunion, but just look at the way Mathis greets him: “What do you want? Come to apologize?” Perhaps Mathis wants forgiveness for his contempt.
Mathis: Vesper! Forgive her... Forgive yourself.
Actually very selfless final moments. His time was not wasted there.
Pussy thinks you will find that the huge royalty Eon would have to pay to IFP answers your question.
As long as they stick with Fleming's titles or original works they commission, they don't have to pay a dime.
As to which non-Fleming Bond books should be adapted, the answer is either Higson's 'Young Bond' books and/or the fabulous 'Money Penny Diaries'. Both would bring something new different and refreshing to the franchise instead of adapting sub-standard (Amis & Horowitz excluded) continuation work.
And what a superb opportunity that would be to
Never thought of that sorry!
Love Fleming, like Horowitz, but always suspicious of Young Bond, know very little of Moneypenny Diaries... maybe I should check them out
