After that, they really should have just returned to the classic Binder design altogether. MK12's reinvention for QOS was a rather generic design that lacked style. I've loved Daniel Kleinman's contributions to the Bond series, but his own reinvention featured in SF wasn't really the great, and he must have known it was underwhelming since for SP he went right back to the Binder design, albeit a more streamlined version.
Would love to see fan edits of the QOS/SF gun barrels inserting footage of Craig into the classic Binder design. You just can't beat the classic Binder design. Ultimately, I'm glad both MK12 and Binder gave their own stab at reinventing it because it does bring out a lot of interesting discussions regarding this one small aspect of the Bond films. It's just 15 seconds, but it has a big impact.
Oh damn it, I knew it. Sorry, It was late here, my head was no good. Of course, the triangle. Loved it.
Cary was urged to shoot a new one, and gave that request thumb up.
The Binder design was fine for 27 long years. Brosnan’s CG gun barrel looks too slick IMO.
I recall Arnold mentioning that he was just looking to add his own style to the gun barrel and opted to use those final bars as a sense of uncertainty (musically speaking, since he doesn't resolve it to the final chord). I'm not sure why Newman went for it as well though. I'm all for a return of the classic guitar riff.
The Binder design never looks dated. Never. What I never truly liked about Daniel Kleinman's changes in the Brosnan-gunbarrels, was the fact that the white dot moves completely out of the screen to the right. Never liked it. And that 3D-effect is merely a nice visual treat, that probably would never happen if you look through this barrel.
No, for me the "SPECTRE"-gunbarrel was the best one, even outperforming the Brosnan-ones. It was simple, fully based on Binder's original template. So now only add some brighter dripping blood, and zoom it out like in all gunbarrel sequences from DN until LTK. Then I am completely happy. Perhaps even draw the gunbarrel design a bit sharper so that more details resurface again. Perhaps simply copy-pasting this one:
- very strong, loud "da da dum" bits
- impressive electric guitar riffs
- loud, big horns
- some 'sun shimmer' effects (first introduced in OHMSS)
- thick deep red dripping blood
In comparison the "SPECTRE"-gunbarrel:
All pre-Brosnan gun barrels are perfect too.
I do like the movement of the light inside the gun barrel. Always seems odd when it doesn't move. Even Binder had some light effects going on, specially on OHMSS. He had his resources back then, we now have others. Why can't they get a mini hd cam inside a real gun barrel and toy with it. I bet they'd get interesting results.
Why not use the good old gun barrel like we are used to :-). They did something like that with CR. I disliked it. Just do some fan service on this one and, well, like you suggested, some lights effects from OHMSS or DAF gunbarrel in it.
Would laughable to fans yes. I think the very notion that we discuss gunbarrel designs in here in essence shows how much of nerdy fan stuff this it. The average gun barrel sequence takes like 18 seconds. Most non-fans / ordinary cinema visitors don't even care. Look to "Skyfall" and "Casino Royale" that did not even open with a gunbarrel.
And use that version of the Bond theme too.
+1
That one was awesome. I Always digged Dalton's walk, turn and shoot a bit more than Brosnan's one. Brosnan looks like he's walking with a hernia on there.
Where is this clip of Craig in the fan edit from? It's much better than SP's. As many others have said, the way he swings the gun in SP bugs the hell out of me.
In fact, I think all of Craig's gun barrels have been pretty poor. QoS being the best, but I think he walks way too quickly. I'm not even a big fan of CR's. At least it's creative but it offends my desire for uniformity and consistency. Though I suppose between many gun barrels using different music and DAD's stupid CGI bullet, consistency has been long dead.
@Milovy ‘s fanedit of Spectre called The Dead Are Alive.

A little stiff-backed/pigeon-chested for my taste. I much prefer Craig's Spectre one actually: I think he does that perfectly (even with a swinging gun!).
To be honest Roger was the master. He knew how to strike a perfect pose :)
Plenty of triangle! I'm telling you it's essential :)
Spectre got that right too ;)
I'm pretty sure the Craig clip is identical in both. In the fan edit, they've just "erased" his swinging arm. If you look closely, there's one little hiccup where you can see Craig's swinging arm for a brief moment.
I'm not complaining about that. But we're in 2019. The GE gunbarrel was a respectful
I agree on the videos you posted. The Binder design doesn't look dated.... in 1971 (the DAF gunbarrel) and that the Binder design is also better than the SP gunbarrel. The problem is, I have already seen the Brosnan era gunbarrel, which to me, was a perfect modernisation of the 1962-89 gunbarrel.
Exactly. Audiences won't laugh, they'll cheer. They should especially cheer if the Bond theme that accompany's the image is in sync and bad ass.
Perhaps, instead of a CGI design this time, Kleinman can secure a pinhole camera and shoot it through the barrel of a real gun, like Binder did back in 1962?
Re create the image in the style Binder shot it, perhaps with a different barrel.
Exactly what Ive been saying for years.
It'd be nice to see it move in a 3D way, with the barrel actually pivoting to follow Bond, rather than it just being a 2D photo which slides along with him.
I think the Brosnan one is still a rather brilliant and subtle updating of the effect.
