Are they politically correct? No!
Is their homosexuality overdone or made fun of? No!
Are they good henchmen and a lot of fun? Yes!
Are their scenes the most memorable parts of the film? Yes!
I think films and TV series have so far been dealing with the subject in either a conservative or stereotypical fashion, missing opportunities. Exceptions exist, of course, such as Brokeback Mountain.
I keep meaning to watch that someday.

Ah! I'd forgotten about her but then her lesbianism is much more underplayed in the 1963 film version than it is in the 1957 novel. A necessary concession to the mores of the time I think it's safe to say.
True it was underplayed, though still obvious on screen certainly during her first meeting with Tatiana.
