Is it bad that I laughed a bit after reading that sentence? Just comes out of nowhere.
But that aside, ok, he's most likely a scumbag and in all likelihood won't be doing Bond 26.
@GadgetMan Why would this have anything to do with how much someone likes NTTD?
Nothing really surprises me when it comes to Hollywood directors and actors. It's a very particular industry that unfortunately attracts some very messed up people. Even great directors who make wonderful films can be rapists, scumbags, abusers etc.
Hell of a power move though.
You kidding? There’s NTTD haters all over social media that are absolutely LOVING this, and are perceiving it as some form of schadenfreude. It makes them feel vindicated in a strange way. The only thing that could top this is if news of Daniel Craig doing something even worse broke.
Ah ok, I get you now. I do tend to forget that how uppity some people can be about certain aspects of NTTD. Yeah, probably true.
Not a fan of Cary, I just want to play devil's advocate. That and the court of public opinion is a little too quick to decide the fate of the accused.
However, the behaviour that's been revealed sounds more like grounded, every day Hollywood. As I pointed out to a couple of our members today-- if this is true-- Cary didn't exactly "Weinstein" these women, but, like many a famous person before him, he used his stature to influence and take what he wants. It's very believable and not outlandish.
As far as the the unfortunate scriptwriter; this is also Hollywood on any given day. I myself had been threatened and bullied by a producer who actually said to me, "I'll make sure you never work in this town again." Yes, the most cliche threat was pitched at me. And, although it was largely an empty threat, he did destroy my relationship I had with his producing partner and the several projects we were working on came to an abrupt halt. I was given my last pay and was cut off.
Bullying and sexual advances of the kind depicted sounds like same old same old.
I was just hoping Cary was above this, but, unchecked and absolute power (over the little people), and many a human can become a monster... Cary wasn't the first (if true), and he won't be the last, unfortunately...

I’m not going to lie: what Kevin and Cary did are horrible, but Kevin is generally a good actor.
Sorry to hear you experienced that.
Unfortunately, some directors are notorious for taking credit (or trying to) for the screenplay after allegedly doing very little or even no work -- one example being Stanley Kubrick, who credited himself for writing THE KILLING, relegating Jim Thompson to "additional dialogue," and then, according to Kirk Douglas, tried to take credit for SPARTACUS when Dalton Trumbo was still blacklisted.
So I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Fukanaga didn't write a word of NTTD.
Come to think of it, I couldn't tell what sounded like him. I could definitely hear and feel PWB's dialogue and character and P & W's usual banter. I think he shaped the story more than dialogue.
When this happened to me, half of me was shocked— I had heard this expression before but thought it was one of those old timey cliches that no one said anymore.
The other half of me felt sudden dread that he could destroy me. That’s not a good feeling. And it was all because I wouldn’t fire a director on one of the projects we were working on. For the first time in my life I felt paralyzed with helplessness. When you’re a working writer and not an A-lister, this was terrifying.
It’s all a power play for ego and dominance. The industry is almost designed to breed this in certain people…
I think it’s a little different because with Depp it was one woman making an accusation. In this case it’s multiple people coming out but with different stories that have more variety, but they all sum it up as: “he’s a total jerk” and people are simply tired of dealing with Hollywood creatives like these. This is what Joss Whedon has been dealing with.
So sorry to hear this happen to you, @peter. I hope, despite the shock and disappointment, that bigger and better things come your way, with trustworthy decent creatives.
Yes I think what’s kind of interesting with this one is that he seems not to have done anything illegal or terrible on a global scale, but mostly seems to have been an exasperating dick at best, and people are just tired of putting up with that stuff anymore. It’s not a scandal (yet) which will make the six o’clock news, but if it dissuades bullies from doing what they do then all the better.
Thank you @Red_Snow … it was a few years ago now. This was an A-list producer who has gone on to other projects, but, I’m sure, if one of my new scripts passed his desk, he’d pee on it, 😂.
I am, and have worked with, some genuine and intelligent and creative people… people who blow my mind with their experiences and professionalism… but there are sharks in the industry who are openly hostile because they’ve never been policed before. They were free to throw coke cans at assistant’s heads, curse and demean and belittle; sexually assault; threaten and bully…
But there is a slow change afoot.
Other writers can tell you of similar experiences I’m sure. I just recently dropped out of another project where the producer and director optioned my script for production; gave my agent a contract with incorrect dates, failed to pay my fee, and, after their promises were never fulfilled, we bailed (which sucks because it was a good little project).
I suppose like anything, there are good and bad agents— except, up until recently, people were afraid to report the abuses that were happening in broad daylight.
I love NTTD and Maniac and True Detective, but it’s a shame that Cary Fukunaga— if this is all true (and, in my experiences, I wouldn’t doubt any of the victims as it sounds, as I said before, just like another day in some offices in Hollywood)— has been exposed as an A-1 scuzz-ball.
I don't know how true the women's accusations are, but their basic timeline does align to some of places / activities Cary has shared on his public instagram stories.
What I do find interesting is with profile boost NTTD has given him, the bigger trade publications - THR, Deadline, Variety, etc. - haven't reported on this yet. Is it too small a story, not serious enough accusations, or is something bigger coming?
Someone had a bone to pick, didn't he? I mean, seriously? This is the rant of a whiny little brat, who waited until there was some chink in Fukunaga's armor, to lay this crap out there. No b@llz. If he had a problem then, he should have spoken out. THEN.
I am not trying to defend Fukunaga. At the same time, if one looks at the accusations being brought against him, by all parties, there's not much more than "He was to mean to me."
The point is he’s a bully and people are sick of them.
I am sure there are at least a hundred people out there who would say the same about me.
At one point during his stay, they said, the three sat in a hot tub, where Fukunaga asked the pair if they were virgins and whether they’d ever participate in a threesome, suggesting that incest is fine.
Well, we’d have to hear from them.
That’s… not great.
