It's a betting term, horse racing mainly.
To win - you pick the winning horse
To place - is to pick a horse to finish in the top 4 (you have more of a chance of winning something but you win less money if you do this bet)
- Die is just cooler than saying lose I imagine.
It's relative to A View To A Kill, given the horse racing being part of the plot. That's how I've always seen it anyways
