I could see Cruise taking more of a Phelps angle in 10 11 and 12, in the field with the team, calling the shots, but not the exact center of the action all the time anymore somehow. He's always the guy waiting around the corner the team is chasing the bad guy into, etc. One move ahead, is how they need to start positioning him.
I think based on this, the biggest indicator for whether Cruise does more Mission movies is ironically what other projects he picks after 8 is released. If he does another Maverick movie, I think we'll get a MI:9. Basically, if he keeps doing action movies, he's going to keep making Mission movies, too.
Maybe if 7&8 don't already do this, he will get a young new director and writers for MI:9 to bring them up on the franchise and introduce or establish, perhaps a woman? or someone to take over (Ilsa?) like they almost tried to with Brandt, and they'll do 10 with maybe a new crew and Cruise in a producer/side-lead acting role for a couple movies after that.
It’s Tom Cruise’s mission should he choose to accept it.
I'm trying to think of a good career map comparison for Cruise to follow in his late career, and the best I can think of is John Wayne. And he kept making Westerns right up until the end!
Sounds spicy ! ...cuz...y'know..."seasoned actor"...I'll just be...moving along...
I know they were wanting to kill off a major character during the opening of Fallout so I'd be surprised if the entire M:I team survives both of these upcoming installments unscathed.
I don't want a Benji sacrifice scene and I'd guess that's what we're getting
That'd be my assumption too. I think they wanted to kill off Renner's Brandt in the opening of the last one but he wasn't available for filming, so I'd imagine they'll take that route with someone else this time around and my bet would be Benji, since he's a fan favorite.
To add, I'm very intrigued by Hayley Atwell and especially Pom Klementieff's roles. I hope one of them is an antagonist because with them and also Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby, I hope they're not all just gonna be helping Ethan. Would be nice to get some variety. Based on set photos, I think Pom is the most likely villain, but Atwell definitely has the potential to be a main villain if they wanted.
Hayley Atwell is a missed opportunity for Bond, but there is still hope.
That's the one that would impact me the most, no question. He's been with Ethan throughout the entire series almost and has always been the most fiercely loyal character.
I would too. People just now think of him as an action star but consider his earlier career decisions. He sought out interesting roles, worked with some of the best older actors - Paul Newman, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman, Jack Nicholson - and worked with some of the best directors - Kubrick, Coppola, Scorsese, Howard, Stone to name a few. I'd like that guy to return. I know he wants to do action and that feeling to want to stay young, but he's also a talented actor on top of that. Is there no desire to challenge himself as an actor and not just the physical side of it anymore? If so, it's a sad loss.
I think some point in his career he realized he was most bankable as an action blockbuster star. But I do believe he has always planned to go back to more drama work when he *has* to later in life, and I think his thinking rn is "not yet."
I think it would have to be contrived for Luther to be offed. He's far from the most physical on the team, and I just don't see him being in any position to sacrifice himself and have it matter. Benji is much more physical and in the action, so more likely imo. They could have done Luther at the opening of Fallout when he was being held hostage so I don't think they'd go back to that so soon.
Well, that budget-level movie is rare these days. He did used to go to medium projects with name directors, but all the name directors now are either stuck in festivals or jump straight to franchises. There aren't many "smaller" roles for him any more, unless he wants to start producing them himself.
I hope he learns how to take that love of excitement and channel it through future projects with new directors and actors, and maybe launch a few careers on his way out. That could be a way of continuing to deliver for audiences as a producer, even if he isn't at the center all the time anymore.
The Fatality Rate in MI (ie, "MI: 1") was through the roof !
I think he does genuinely love movies and making them, and I can see the thrill in making M:I films: not just from doing the big stunts for himself but from creating some of the more incredibly effective set-pieces in movies. He's an unusual chap certainly, but I tend to believe his love for movies is genuine.
