Denis V makes long, contemplative, sometimes somnambulant time-killers. Enjoyable in their own way, but not action thrillers

I have wanted Chris McQuarrie to direct a bond film since jack reacher and I wanted him to write a bond film since Usual Suspects

Honestly if they got him to reboot the franchise with someone like Jack Bannon as the New James Bond 007

I could easily see it being the best bond film to date for me and blowing my current favorite Casino Royals out of the water

Especially if we get a Spangled Mob trilogy from him

    But on to mission impossible

    The trailer looks good

Other than Jack Bannon, I agree 100%

Isn't Jack Bannon rather slight of build to portray Bond ? I didn't even bother to check his height. As for the Spangled Mob - really ? I've seen a few other folks in favor of it, too. Bond vs....gangsters ? We've already seen series lows with Bond as a drug cop. Not saying the entire world must be at risk each time, but, gangsters ?

Forget McQuarrie, I want Tom Cruise to direct a Bond film.

Thing about McQ is that he directs and writes for the audience. He has no agenda or personal style to push. He seems to love the idea and challenge of creating high quality, mainstream movies. How many directors/writers are there who do this. He seems to get the right balance between something new to entertain/engage whilst keeping a consistant tone. IMHO, he will stay with MI and want to charter the series through new waters.

There are definitely a handful of nods in there (the little yellow car being the most obvious) but nearly half of these comparisons are a bit of a reach. I mean, 'vehicle driving across landscape establishing shot' is hardly exclusive to Bond, is it?

I kind of like the GoldenEye title sequence one, though. That's kinda cool.

"Shot-for-shot parallels" but, as @CraigMooreOHMSS says, they're merely establishing shots. That's quite a reach of a post.

It's just a bit of fun! Some cool similarities even if not intended.

It’s fun, but I’ve seen a few people saying that MI is lifting from 007, and it’s not really true. Bond was hardly the first film to be set in Rome or have an action scene on top of a train :)

Funnily enough, with regards to the Fiat, the similarities to Bond aren’t really the important thing there: the issue is that there’s a bit of action in the new Indiana Jones film (due out next year) where our heroes make their getaway… in a Fiat 500 :)

There really are a ton of 007 callbacks just in that trailer alone.

I'm fine with it. Honestly. This just looks so good, I couldn't care less if it ended up in full crossover with the Bond universe.

Aside: could you imagine that as a twist? Purely dreaming here, but how ridiculous would it be if Hunt had to meet a British contact or something in Dead Reckoning Part 2 and it's Pierce Brosnan. (Playing an 'unnamed' character like when Lazenby showed up in that UNCLE movie, of course). But the film would heavily imply he's an aged Bond. Who, of course, would have been in his prime roughly when Ethan Hunt's franchise began in the mid-90s...

I'm absolutely loving this new MI trailer. It looks fun, exciting and the action looks intense and creative. There are certainly scenes reminiscent of the Bond films but I think it goes to show that going forward, the Bond films really needs to lean into its own catalogue and make the films gripping in a fun way again. I'll add that fun doesn't mean goofy or cheesy. For me, this trailer looks better than the trailers for the last 4 Bond films. I'm sure we're going to have a great time watching this when it's released.

    theory....
Ilsa in the desert looks to be on a mission to assasinate a specific target. (no sun burn) We see a possible rescue mission in the desert and then Ilsa (wearing same top) with sun burn or similar on her face, looking exhausted with a barred window in background parsing the "key" to Hunt. I think Ilsa gets captured on a specific mission and Hunt, possibly against orders and confirming her feelings for her, executes a rescure mission but it's connected to a wider plot as clearly, the "key" has a wider meaning

    must do some work :-)

Perhaps the desert sequence is what opens the film and that's how she loses her eye.

I don't think she's lost an eye: she's using a precision rifle so she's covering her eye to help her use the telescope- apparently that's something they do sometimes.

It's a really nice touch, shows she's a complete professional. These small things all add up. Little touches of reality within pure fantasy/adventure.

I think you're right, then, as that's the only scene where she seems to don it. I saw some non-desert BTS shots of her with one so I wasn't sure.

I enjoyed the trailer and then suddenly there was written "next year"?! Imagine you expected this movie would be in cinema this summer and then the trailer tells you that you have to wait another year. That was...shocking :((

Fun fact: both Rogue Nation and Fallout are out of Tom’s top 10 highest grossing films in the US adjusting for inflation, falling behind Interview with the Vampire. I bet Dead Reckoning will be able to at least best Ghost Protocol at #9.

Much as I'd love him to - I'm not sure anyone else around at the moment quite knows their way around a blockbuster like he does- I don't think he ever would. I think it's a bit of a loyalty thing, and he's a Mission guy. He is Mission.

    Um, Denis Villeneuve?

I don't know if I'd call his stuff blockbusters exactly, although I know he's done a couple of big budgeters now. But they're not really the Friday night, popcorn munchers like the M:I films.

If I had to pick a day, I'd say they're more suited to Sunday evenings. Can't quite put my finger on why.

Excited, but apart from the money shot cliffjump, nothing we haven't seen before.
    - Huge party or gathering involving a fistfight - check!
    - Car chase in a crowded big city - check!
    - Cruise running... a lot - check!
    - fight on top of a moving train - check!
    etc...
The setpiece involving the world war one plane for MI:8 sure looks promising, though.

Virtually anything seen in film today can be compared to something seen in previous films .

This. The same could be said about NTTD or any other big budget action film these days (or in any genre, really). Seems a weird complaint and takeaway from what I felt was an exciting and fantastic looking action trailer but everyone has their own tastes, I guess. Can't please everybody.

Yes indeed. I can't think of many films where a full-size steam engine plummets over a cliff or the star of the film does a skydive on a motorcycle, but folks will look for what they've seen before and complain about it I guess :D

The Mission Impossible trailer is really good. I think apart from the action scenes that are now better than Bond, it has better villains too. I think CR was the last Bond trailer and film that really had the energy of the recent Mission Impossible trailers and films. Hopefully, Amazon's wealth would speak for Bond 26 & Beyond visually and will return Bond back to the visually jaw-dropping days.
