Watching a movie in IMAX can be amazing, if said movie was at least partially shot in IMAX. Watching a completely non-IMAX movie in IMAX is just a waste of money.
I think that's an overreaction. Most of the experience comes from the insane large cinema screen. At least, that's what I think. Let's agree to disagree :-).
Doesn't it strike you that there isn't any official promotional news yet about "Mission: Impossible 5"?
I mean, "SPECTRE" already had its 3rd photo call, several footage from set via the official Twitter account anddd the first official videoblog.
"Kingsman: The Secret Service" was heavily promoted with help of director/salesman Matthew Vaughn. Teaser posters were heavily focusing on the wardrobe of the Kingsmen.
And now Guy Ritchie's "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." has already released its first teaser trailer, which was reviewed with much acclaim. And also from "U.N.C.L.E." we saw way more on-set pictures than from "M:I 5".
Then there's the release date of "M:I 5", only two weeks before "U.N.C.L.E.". And both films will need a lot of IMAX screens. So, when "U.N.C.L.E." premieres on August 14th, could "M:I 5" then suffer a dramatical decrease of IMAX-screens?
And then a tweet from director Christopher McQuarrie, stating that they haven't wrapped up yet:
So, will they manage? Off course they will manage. But as smoothly at the other three mentioned spy movies?
Just to lift up the spirits, here are some (older) on set pictures from "Mission: Impossible 5":
And, don't forget "Mission: Impossible 5" is/was also filming in London. With Hunt-girls Rebecca Ferguson and Stella Stocker off course:
just a guess but an educated one.
I myself don't think the current Bonds are missing anything - they are perfect for their time - but I bet I'd might feel differently if we didn't have these 'gadgety' MI movies (and Kingsman I guess, though I've not seen it yet) to tide us over.
In my opinion, I actually do see similarities between Bond and Hunt. On the M:I Forums they already talk about "Hunt-girl" as opposed to Bond-girls :-P. On top of that, look at some scenes from "Ghost Protocol". The entire party sequence in India, with the walking around and talking to each other by earphones, reminded me a lot of the "Skyfall" casino sequence.
Both franchises have this suaveness, are full of exotic locations and have action that could be interchange-able between Bond and Hunt. As a matter of fact...have you actually compared the locations of "SPECTRE" with "M:I 5"? And what about the possible inclusion of a syndicate in "M: I 5", called TAURUS ;-)?
Bond has a heritage of class/glamour. They must always retain that no matter what. It is a big part of what defines a Bond movie. It's essential to its brand.
From my personal standpoint, it is actually more important than the action. That's why, unlike some, I wasn't too bothered about only one or two major set-pieces in SF. It was glamorous and that made up for it.
MI needs to be heavy on the action. From my standpoint that is essential to its brand. The glamour is secondary.
I'm not saying MI is not classy, and I'm not saying that Bond doesn't have action. I'm just saying in terms of what defines them, class is a Bond must. So is witty dialogue.
I agree with you that both seem to be infringing on the other's turf more and more these days. As a fan, it gives us more to enjoy! :)
Women on the other hand are for Bond in most cases a tool for information as much as for recreation. Hunt on the other hand was a much more romantic guy all the time, not to mention he´s married in the meantime. So I must confess I find the comparison between Bond girls and Hunt girls hard to understand.
Oooowh, absolutely. Just look at the wardrobe of:
--> "SPECTRE"
--> "The Man From UNCLE"
--> "Mission: Impossible: TAURUS"
--> "Kingsman The Secret Service"
For me, as a mild fashion-victim, I'm drooling with my mouth open wide. This kind of stuff you won't see in Marvel movies. 2015 is definitely "The Year Of The Spy", like I've said quite a few times ;-). Love it!!!
.... :(
Hmmm, it seems the rescheduled premiere date is not entirely made due to smart marketing :-S. Moreover, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." is anxiously waiting to fully compete with "M:I 5"....

Anyway I'm really looking forward to this. I think the first was good, the second was fun, the third one was fantastic and GP was the best one yet so I have high hopes for this one. From the looks of things they seem to even have managed to top the epic building stunts from the last one (how do you beat scaling the tallest building in the world? Hang off a plane thousands of feet in the air of course) so this should be great.
Hmmm, quick rating:
1st film: 6.0/10
2nd film: 4.5/10
3rd film: 8.0/10
4th film: 7.5/10
1st film: 7.5/10
2nd film: 8.5/10
3rd film: 8.5/10
4th film: 8.0/10
1. 9/10
2. 7/10
3. 9/10
4. 8/10
1. 9/10 (genius - spy/Cruise/De Palma)
2. 6/10 (John Woo special - a little dated)
3. 4/10 (only redeemed by PSH. Hated the sap domestic wifey angle)
4. 7.5/10 (a return to form but still prefer 1)
2- 6/10 (big John Woo fan but not a fan of this, the plot is forgettable and it comes close to self parody at times, I do like Dougray Scott though and some of the action is great)
3- 8.5/10 (tense, action packed, great villain, great story which is personal but not soppy or melodramatic, I like how it developed Ethans character too; knocked it down a couple of points because we never actually find out what the fuck the rabbits foot is)
4- 9.5/10 (the only thing that lets it down is the lack of a strong villain, other than that it's great, a fun, epic, stunning, really well made blockbuster)
2- 9/10 (Just a great ride, stylishly served up & with an awesome score to boot. Hunt survives more impacts in this one...)
3- 9/10 (Best villain ever, JJ keeps it moving & REAL tense moments. Ethan hit that car pretty hard...)
4- 9/10 (Nice team work, nicely paced, the Spider-man moment was both vertigo-inducing & hilarious.)
Re-rated mostly higher than before since we're watching them now...
2. 9/10 - a 2 hour thrill ride, wall to wall action, tons of badass moments by Cruise, and I love the Australian settings.)
3. 9/10 - epic, great villain, very tense, great script, awesome soundtrack, badass Cruise and of course it has Simon Pegg.
4. 9.5/10 - simply mindblowing, Cruise is at his best, more Pegg, more humour, more awesomeness, addition of Jeremy Renner, one of my favorite action films of the last 5 years.
It sort of put him through an emotional wringer, much like it did me my first time... ;)
Spot on IMHO. De Palma is a class act
2. 4/10 - A near total disaster.
3. 6/10 - Very generic and the whole thing looks like it was made for TV. (Although Hoffman was great in it.)
4. 7.5/10 - Easily the best Mission Impossible movie yet, thanks to Brad Bird's brilliant directing.
