Using a Russian state organisation known as SMERSH would be a bit like using a German state organisation known as the Gestapo. Both existed in reality under long-defunct regimes. Fleming probably wouldn't have used SMERSH in the 1950s if he'd known at the time that it had been disbanded in 1946.
  • @JWESTBROOK fair enough, but we had the russians in the moore and dalton films too so there has been similar villians in the past. I don't think smersh would work very well but it could do I suppose
  • Even if spectre don't return there's no reason why blofeld can't return acting solo.
Just imagine the outrage SKYFALL had Blofeld as the villain, but no SPECTRE. In case you missed it, Blofeld is SPECTRE. One cannot exist without the other.

OHMSS is one of the most loved bond films and SPECTRE aren't really used. DAF also don't have spectre. And its a new timeline, having blofeld without spectre could help re-imagine him in the modern day so he's different from dr evil and other parodies

SPECTRE not in OHMSS? What about all those chaps in the orange ski suits?

They weren't outright called SPECTRE. The only real connection to SPECTRE in OHMSS was Blofeld himself. Same with DAF.

Bond to Draco: "Not quite, an organisation called SPECTRE operates worldwide..."

Y'see, I haven't watched the movie in over a year, I forgot. Sorry. I'm still certain SPECTRE isn't mentioned in DAF.

:) Well, I'm just obsessed enough to watch OHMSS about 3 times each year! I'm pretty sure you're right about DAF.

I believe an intervention must be staged. Oh, well, at least you didn't pick DAF or Octopussy to watch 3 times a year.

By the way, does anybody else get this weird thrill out of saying "DAF" as a word? There may be something wrong with me, schedule that intervention for the both of us.

I am baffled at the notion that because the WORD Spectre wasn't mentioned in a particular Bond film containing Blofeld? That he either went rogue from his own creation? Or he started working for someone else?

The first 3 out of 4 films built up to Blofeld being the creator and head of Spectre and the revealing of him obviously in YOLT. When you the name Bond? You think MI6! When you hear Leiter? Its CIA! Blofeld =Spectre!

Its just accepted as fact. He is the boss and everyone knows it!

a proper version of Slugger Moran would be nice.....

you SMERSH could be a Black Water (XE) type organization "private" but not really.
  • I saw a pic of a DBS in Australia with SMERSH as the nameplate :D :P

Spectre featured in 5 of the first 6 films, and that's it. Dr. No referenced it. We saw it first-hand, headed up by Blofeld in FRWL, TB and YOLT and it was very much alive as an organization headed by Blofeld in OHMSS.
There was however no mention of Spectre in DAF. Blofeld while ambitious as ever, seemed to have set aside the organizational structure of numbered subordinates, and was acting more as an independant criminal king-pin. You could say that Bond had at least temporarily helped to destroy the Spectre organization.

Bingo. I think Eon has kept them deliberately vague (especially in Casino Royale) in order to save their potential for future films.
  • im sure this has already been said but an non-existent organisation such as smersh will not feature in Skyfall. AS for Blofeld and Spectre, isnt that impossible now with all the legal fallout from the Thunderball/McClory settlement in the 90s?
