James Bond Continuation Author’s Other Books and Works

I’m curious as if anyone has read books that aren’t Bond books by the continuation novel authors. Did you enjoy their work outside of Bond? State the book and their author. Ian Fleming up to the most recent author, Bond or Spinoff Series are welcome!

    I've mentioned it on here before but I really enjoyed Whatever Gets You Through the Night by Charlie Higson. Like Double or Nothing there is a concerned effort to feel current that when you're first reading can feel gratuitous but once it gets going I felt it was a solid thriller that so satisfying dovetails all of its plot lines into the climax.

    Speaking of Sherwood, DoN has made me want to read her other works. A Wild and True Revelation sound right up my alley so I can't wait for that to come out next year and I'm interested to read Testament. I don't know that much about it except for the fact that it was critically acclaimed so I hope it lives up to that hype.

    And I suppose if I'm being thorough, The Feast of the Drowned by Steve Cole. It was one of the first Doctor Who New Series Adventure novels for Tennant's Tenth Doctor (so weird to have to caveat that now), but it was one of the first books I remember reading but also I had the free audiobook supplement read by Tennant and so purely on sentimental value I really liked it and from what I remember it does hold up as a decent Doctor Who story.

    And then I always bought the Alex Rider books, I remember very vividly the graphic novel for Stormbreaker and I did read the novel but all it's unfortunately overshadowed but the terrible movie adaptation for me.

    Honestly I’ve never read a non-Bond book by a continuation author. I’d be interested in giving Horowitz’ Moriarty stuff a go.

    I've read a few of Gardner's non-Bond Books : the first two Boysie Oakes novels, the frist Moriarty Diaries, and the Secret... trilogy. My favourite being The Secret Generations, which would make (I've said it before and will say it again) a great TV series.

    I’ve read Anthony Horowitz’s Sherlock Holmes novel The House of Silk (2011). Personally commissioned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s estate. A classic! Horowitz really understands both Holmes and Bond. That’s a rarity for a lot of people.

    I have of course read several of John Gardner's non-Bond novels including some from the Boysie Oakes and Herbie Kruger spy novel series. I could do with reading a lot more when I get the time. I do own them all though, some in various hardback and paperback editions and a few uncorrected proof copies to boot. Gardner wrote 55 books in all so there are plenty to choose from. I've not thus far read any of the non-Bond novels written by the other Bond continuation authors though I have read some of Kingsley Amis's non-fiction and own a fair few of his other novels too.

    Now that IFP and EON both have the legal rights, I hope IFP does for Blofeld what Doyle’s estate did for Moriarty. He is the Bond villain (other than maybe Goldfinger or Trevelyan from a marketing standpoint), who could headline a book or two. I think it’d be better if it was set in modern times, the character, Irma Bunt and Spectre do need a modern literary book comeback.

    Considering how many people are happy with Anthony Horowitz, here’s an idea. He made Sherlock Holmes and James Bond fans and their estates happy. I think he should be given a chance to bring another character back from literary sleep: Indiana Jones. I imagine that Disney and Lucasfilm want more merchandise with Indy, particularly if the new movie is a hit. It’s been over a decade since there’s been a new adult Indy novel. I would trust him to bring the characters back in a positive way. In particular Sallah. Lucasfilm will definitely bring the character back for the long term, particularly with Disney in charge. Anthony Horowitz should be the one to lead the next Indiana Jones book(s) for the time being.

    Yep Indy had a fair amount of books and comics in the 90s. They are hard to find and can be quite expensive. Lucasfilm should do with literary Indy what IFP does with Bond: a new author in charge of writing books. Indy always will have a adult audience akin to Bond, Jack Ryan or Jack Reacher. I also want to put Jeffery Deaver, Raymond Benson Sophie Hannah and Kim Sherwood in as possible names for the series.
