So Dan and SF didn't get the nominations, does it make SF any less good?
The best point made so far and one that everyone is overlooking. The person that matters most in the awards process is yourself.
How many awards did OHMSS win? Shit all. How many critics slagged it off? Loads. Does that stop me from loving it? No.
Its maybe a pleasant bonus to win some awards but how would you feel if DAD had blagged 10 Oscars? Would we all be saying its one of the greatest films ever made or would we still think it to be garbage? Theres only one critic that matters and thats YOU so by all means award it 15 Germanladies (do you fancy being scuplted in statuette from Germanlady?) if you want but dont be devasated and claim some sort of Watergate conspiracy when other people disagree with you.
    [/quote]

The thing is, you are not realistic at all now. Get your facts straight please. George Lazenby so far is the only Bond-actor who got awarded with a Golden Globe nomination for 'best Newcomer Actor'. If you ask me, that is something that has been overlooked all the time and at that time, in 1970, it was a great support for George Lazenby.

Then I say: OFF COURSE does it not make 'Skyfall' any less good if it didn't get the nomination. I have never overlooked that. But it is indeed a 'pleasant bonus'. Though I would call it 'worthy cinema recognition'. And that's how I always talked about this subject.

'DAD' nominated for 10 Oscars? That's just to make your arguments look more fierce, as this would never happen. Even the Oscars do not award such crap.

Is SF even a British film? It was produced by Americans and made with American money wasn't it?

It had lots of British actors and a British director, and it was about a British character, but I don't think it counts as a British film.

I feel bad for the people who made great British independant films this year that have now been overlooked because the Baftas obviously thought they'd better give SF at least something.

@TheWizardOfIce Fair point and I'm not a member of the "SF is the best Bond ever" brigade, but I do think it was better than lots of what got nominated.

I'm not that fussed now to be honest. I was just shocked this morning because I was expecting it to get nominated for more.

Wait, Bardem and Dench got nominated? Nobody f*cking told me. I assumed we didn't get any acting nods since when I was online this morning nobody mentioned this, just that SF wasn't nominated for best picture.

Well in that case I'm more than satisfied. I thought Bardem deserved to get nominated more than anything else anyway.

Eight nominations in good categories. I'm happy.

All I was saying is Skyfall being nominated for Best British Film is an honor, as it is prominently a British film. I am not saying whether it is more/less prestigious or 'powerful' than a stupid golden man or Best Film nominee, just saying it is nice that it was nominated.

I skimmed through the last two pages, and I surmise people are fighting again over what it did/didn't win? This is how the Box Office Total thread turned out, and in the end, who cares anymore? It received eight nominations. We should be happy it was recognized in such a way to win so many.

Some people are never satisfied, even when given some of the best. Skyfall finished off 2012 with a bang, receiving love from critics and fans alike in Bond's 50th year on screen. Skyfall has shown us that the future looks bright with great performances given all around, deep plot and drama, technical awes like Deakin's cinematography, jaw dropping locales and Mendes all at the helm. One of Bond's greatest years where even more fans have been drawn in by a film that has something for everyone. It is a super box office success, meaning word spread and people were willing to see it again and again, as well as that it is a film you want to keep seeing time after time. It is addictive, thrilling, and a behemoth of Bond cinema with a perfect mix of drama, laughs and action. Yes? What did you say?...Excuse me-

...What did you say? It got a few big snubs at the BAFTAS? Oh, well that just cancels all that stuff out then... 8-|

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7, yeah, I don't get it. Look at QoS: it received two BAFTA nominations, but it doesn't alter my opinion on it - I heavily enjoyed it. If it wins in every single category or gets zero nominations, my opinion will not change.

On a side note, it's great to see 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' on there. That was one of my favorite movies of last year - it was just so fun, and Dench, Nighy, and the rest of them made a really great pairing.

And 'Headhunters' for non-English film? Yes, please! That film was amazing, though I think 'Amour' may win.

I think Bardem deserves it more than Craig does anyway.

I think you're right. While Craig was excellent in the film, that feminine, yet incredibly destructive personality Bardem brought to the screen was wonderful.

Also, I've counted this list I'm looking at three times now, and I see only seven BAFTA nominations? Why am I not seeing the eighth?

Isn't Dench nominated not for Skyfall but for Exotic Marigold Hotel?
  • @Creasy47 I thought Craig was good but not as good as he was in CR.

The brutality he bought seems to have disappeared and although most of his one liners were good (I liked the waste of good scotch line and the last rat standing one), some of them (the Macau casino lines and the "health and safety" bit) felt a bit shoved in.

Bardem I thought was brilliant. The best performance of his I've seen and the best Bond villian since Sanchez imo. I reckon he deserves an award more.

Yup, some people are never happy. Sorry guys...but I am fine with being shut down. Its part of the game and that*s ok. Still, they got snubbed surprisingly for many :-?

Skyfall, the latest in the 50-year-old James Bond franchise, punched in with eight nominations. Surprisingly, not one of them was a best actor nomination for Daniel Craig, despite countless critics noting his performance as outstanding.

@thelivingroyale, I do agree that he had a lot of great quips in the film, but some of them felt forced, especially the "I always hated this place." line (or whatever it was - been a while since I've seen it) before he escapes to the tunnels and SF is destroyed. I love how proud of himself he seems when he says "I got into some deep water." to M towards the end.

Yes, Bardem definitely deserves the award.

"The American Society Of Cinematographers’ feature film nominees unveiled today include Roger Deakins for Skyfall, marking his 11th ASC Award nomination after he was given the group’s lifetime achievement honor in 2011."

    http://www.deadline.com/2013/01/asc-awards-nominations-2013-cinematographers-list/

The ASC nominations for Best Cineamtography are:
    Anna Karenina, Seamus McGarvey
    Les Miserables, Danny Cohen
    Life of Pi, Claudio Miranda
    Lincoln, Janusz Kaminski
    Skyfall, Roger Deakins
  • What time will the oscar noms hit in the UK? And is there any way to watch them live?
Deakins has 8 major nominations, and 3 major wins. :)

    **So far..
  • @Creasy47 I completely agree with you on the one liners.

I swear I remember somebody on here saying that Bardem made up the whole rats speech himself? If it's true then that's amazing. I think that's one of, if not the, best villian intros/reveals of the series.

It's up there with Blofeld spinning round to show his face and Trevelayn coming out of the darkness in the graveyard.

    http://www.indiewire.com/article/for-your-consideration-final-predictions-for-the-most-unpredictable-oscar-nominations-in-year?page=1#articleHeaderPanel

According to this website, 'Skyfall' will tomorrow earn SIX (!!) bloody Oscar nominations, including one acting nod, 'Best Supporting Actress'. And this prediction excludes a nomination for 'Best Supporting Actor' and 'Best Picture'. If these are included 'Skyfall' could have EIGHT nominations.

Allthough I find eight nom's a bit farfetched....be prepared for at least four or five Oscar nominations for 'Skyfall'. A record!

We all saw the film, we all have an opinion on his performance. No amount of bleating will make BAFTA change their mind. Just be thankful you have a performance you happen to love. When you watch SF in 20 years you won't be thinking about missed award opportunities you'll be thinking back to when you first saw the film in cinemas. It's really not a big deal.

I just think, you never answer to WHAT I actually mean to say. Maybe its me being German and not making myself clear - but I don't think so. YOU make me repeat myself - ALL I ever said was, that many people ( critics included) expected him to win and obviously thought he was worthy and were surprised by the snob. Now - what's not matter to factly about that?
I am looking foward to your explanation and denial of what is obvious.

Me neither mate. I think CR is still his stand out performance. Don't get me wrong, he was good but there is a lot a hyperbole flying around this site about his SF performance that isn't warranted.

But thing is - this quote is NOT about this side, but about general critics, which obviously didn't sit in the Baftas. What's so hard about accepting, that many thought his nod was a sure thing? You can go any way you want from there...
  • @RC7 Definetly. It'll die down once the film has left cinemas and the discussion moves to Bond 24.

I also think CR was his best performance for the reasons I mentioned in my post a bit above this one. I think Bardem was better in SF than he was and I'm glad he was nominated.

I'm happy that SF actually got nominated. And in the right departments too, it is 8 nominations.. Which means, 8 possible wins. Right? ;)

And as @thelivingroyale think about DCs best performance was in CR, i can only agree!

You are weird...you know :-). Be prepared for exactly the opposite then. 'Skyfall' will become as of tomorrow the Bond film with the most critically acclaimed recognition ever; true, deserved recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts. And be prepared that, whatever nomination 'Skyfall' will get, reality and, its logical result, positivity, will kick in on this topic. So your wishful thinking might be forgotten by then ;-).

Dont get me wrong Gustav I certainly wont mind if SF picks up the odd oscar but what do you seriously think is going to happen tomorrow? SF is going to sweep the board with best picture, best director and best actor nods? If it didnt happen at the BAFTAs I cant see why the yanks would do that. I'll happily admit I'm wrong tomorrow if it does but any nominations more than song, cinematography and a handful of technical categories will be a massive bonus.
