Casino Royale is not globally loved as you put it, in fact I was reading some reviews recently where people couldn't find a good word to say about it, and I can fully see where they're coming from. There are a great many people, a high percentage even, that think Craig made for an awful 007 and his debut release was an unmitigated disaster, and 'The Death' of James Bond some even went as far as saying
You'd be surprised
But it seems to me, that among Bond fans, CR is very popular atleast.
It's just that for one person who enjoys it, there will always be next in line someone who treats it with distaste, It's just the way some Bond films go
Die Another Day however, has a general consensus in that it is simply an abomination of a James Bond movie. Hard to argue
It follows the formula and is built the way a Bond movie should (apart from Bond being imprisoned, the worst thing about the movie).
I myself love that aspect of the films. Like in DN where Dr. No himself serves Bond some dinner while showing off his stolen painting. In FRWL Grant gives him a last cig, in GF Bond is flown on Goldfinger's private plane, and treated to some nice hospitality once there with drink and Pussy(Galore, not you know...). In TB Bond and Largo shoot clay pigeons, then play cards quite gentlemanly. I love that about the SPECTRE themed Bond films, and even GF has it. Gentlemen who just happen to have evil intentions, yet they treat even their enemies in a fair manner. Though some like Grant just want to see him suffer, they still allow him to live just a bit longer.
True, GoldenEye isn't all tat bad, the story is actually pretty good, the cast is very strong, too bad it wasn't actually made with the actor it was written for.
Still think Bean should have been Bond. The perfect buffer between Dalton and Craig, and far better actor.
Casino Royale gets an 81 here. Die Another Day gets a 56.

- I do enjoy the opening Hovercraft chase (even if a building blows up without being hit).. I disliked the slow-mo look of Bond jumping away from the flamethrower - but other than that, it was enjoyable.
- the opening credits, minus Madonna's halfassed attempt at a song, was pretty cool.. i liked the way they used it to progress Bond story - instead of just random girls dancing.
- the fencing/sword fight was also pretty cool.. always get a chuckle the way Graves just laughs at the end of it all.
- the Aston vs Jag sequence towards the end was also a highlight..
but - with all that said, it still doesn't prevent this movie from being a gigantic pile of (you know).. i'm talking jurassic park triceratops size.
i found QOS's more subtle humor, a lot funnier and more refreshing than the forced DAD humor... for myself, humor works better when it plays off scene and the moment - not when it tries to draw attention to itself and BE the moment..
true, DAD has a story... an obnoxiously lousy and audacious one..... give me QOS any day over DAD thank you.
Hmmm yes more humor in DAD than QOS, that's why DAD is completely a Joke film, laughable Bond, cartoonish Bond ...
Yes, the storytelling is bad, but not the story. Half the people here wanted a revenge story after Tracy's death. Thats what Quantum was intended to be, before the writers strike. Please make sure you shift the blame properly. The story, Bond after Mr. White and Quantum, while trying to cope with the loss of a loved one is a brilliant story. The way the story was told, however, was no good.
The same with Die Another Day. The story was good, but the writing, acting, and action elements hindered the film, in my opinion.
Well it should have been Tim, but Sean is a better choice than you know who.
Ideal:
Dalton- 1987 - 1998 (7 films)
Sean- 2000 - 2008 (5 films)
Craig- 2010 - present (4 films)
I want a younger actor after Craig, too >:/
Don't get me wrong, I love Craig. But I would have loved a long Sean period, and Craig looks/is kind of old to take on the role! I'll be happy with whatever we get from him, though :)
The thing is all formula and formula done badly at that.
You think the humour in DAD is good? You thinks Halle Berry should get commedienne of the year for "Yo mamma" and "I think I got the thrust of it?" Seriously? It was sub Carry-On humour. Humour that would embarass schoolboys. Tamahori even referenced Carry On with Bond which shows you how off kilter he was.
QoS, the humour is more subtle. But it is there and the story is more adult. But if you prefer the cartoon characterisations of DAD to the three dimensional characters of QoS...then that is your prerogative.
Don't even try it @actonsteve, it's a dead end ;)
Haha, good one.
Well, I never actually said I like the humor, but not that you ask me...The "especially when you´re bad" line always makes me laugh. The Fidel Castrato joke is good, just as the wheelchair bit, the Q-scene and the scene where Moneypenny dreams about a romantic situation with Bond. Other than that the best humor is the lack of seriousness and not trying to be realistic at all.
DAD makes me embarrassed I'm a Bond fan.
That's how I feel about CR and QOS... talk about destroying the original novel..... DAD on the other hand is pure entertainement, tons of fun and laughs... DAD is pure awesome ! And of course, Brosnan delivered a much more Flemingesque performance than Craig in either of his 2 films....
DAD is up there with Johnny English 1 and 2 as one of the best british spy films of the 21st century !! (yet) !!******
****** Yes, I do happen to love 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy aswell' so no need to blow a fuse.
At least it's properly acted. The only Fleming coming out of Brosnan is if he ate a book... Richard Simmons would deliver a Better Bond!
Yeah, I gotta give you that atleast. It certainly is.
Eh ? Brosnan delivered one of the most Fleming-esque performance in DAD !! A huge middle-finger directed at the appalling TWINE, and his awful melodramatic performance in the 1999 outing.
Well Brosnan was better in DAD but that's not saying much. The travesty was in DAD, more than Brosnan's performance. The middle finger was Tamawhore-i giving it to Babs, probably why you enjoy it so much DC!
