I also think they are the only two Bond films where we can see him literally crossing the Iron Curtain: West Germany - East Germany and the other way around in OP, Czechoslovakia - Austria twice in TLD. Now that I think if it, both are partly set in a former Eastern Bloc country that today doesn't exist anymore.

He crosses across the Balkans to Austria in FRWL. I’m not quite sure of the geopolitical situation of Yugoslavia at that time - i think they were communist but not aligned with the Eastern bloc, so maybe this doesn’t count as crossing the Iron Curtain?

Yugoslavia wasn't part of the Warsaw Pact, even though it was a communist country.

Always thought he crossed the border to Italy though, as he goes by sea.

You’re right, it’s the Adriatic. In my head I had it as a lake - possibly as it was filmed on a Scottish Loch (although it could have been a Sea Loch I guess, in which case I’m doubly wrong)

I'm sure this may not be controversial, but Licence To Kill is a really, bloody good film.

Its not, however, a good Bond film.

Please share more of your thoughts on this. I'm always interested in hearing different ideas and LTK is a really polarizing film.

@BT3366 apologies for the late reply.

LTK is a cracking film. Its well paced, plotted and acted. The gritty vibe is superb, too.

The reasons I don't find it quintessential Bond; Simply, it feels too American. A touch too dark, it has a decidedly 'made for TV' look about it, and was too in to the Miami Vice vibe.

My wife and I watched it a couple of weeks ago, the first time I have seen it for a few years. She is by no means a big Bond fan, but she remarked that it "feels like a Die Hard film with Timothy Dalton instead of Bruce Willis". I have to agree with that.

Its a better film than probably 10 of the other 007 movies at least, but it isn't quintessential Bond, for me.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. LTK looks and feels like an action movie where Bond was meant to make a cameo appearance and then gets center stage.

OP is better than TMWTGG, AVTAK and maybe MR. FYEO and TSWLM are far better. LALD is about the same.

I love all of Sir Roger’s Bond movies. Probably MR is my favourite but OP and FYEO are not far behind. If I had to pick a least favourite it would be AVTAK, but it’s still a movie I hugely enjoy

My least favourite of his is FYEO. I agree it's a welcome return to basics, but compared to his other efforts it's a bit vanilla.

I always go for Rog when I'm in the mood for unapologetic fun, when I'm more in a Flemingesque mood I tend to go for the early Connery's, Lazenby or Dalton.

Agree, as does GoldenGun above. Does that make it less controversial?

FYEO has been trading places back and forth with TSWLM for me as Roger's best. Either wins whenever I have to decide. I never liked OP, beyond accepting it as a popcorn-and-chewing gum fairy-tale adventure. I think I'm at the point where I'd see basically every Moore film as superior to OP, maybe barring AVTAK. But maybe not. Just like I keep appreciating MR more all the time in comparison with the by now terribly "dated" TSWLM,

I expect AVTAK to surpass OP in my rating pretty soon. The only Moore film that has a pretty-much fixed position for me is LALD. Not at the top, but as a very steady highlight that I'd like to re-watch endlessly, notwithstanding the fact that much of it is supernatural nonsense.

AVTAK will always be at the very bottom of my Moore rankings and hovering near the bottom overall, with only TWINE keeping it from rock bottom.

I'm glad I can agree withe the basic order regarding TWINE, although I'd definitely still put DAD as the absolute nadir of the franchise below it.

    That is a fair assessment.

We appreciate your predicament, Mr. Pepper. Mood depending of course, but both have been neck and neck for my top spot for the past few years.

It has been stated several times before that TLD had the last great poster art work campaign in the franchise. I'd even go further and argue that it has the best art work of them all. (TB and OP being a close second and third.)

Skyfall is just an inferior remake of TWINE.

:-w Assuming for a moment that I'll go with you on SF being essentially a remake of TWINE (and trust me when I say I'm not going with you on that one), then it'd be a FAR superior one. I know many have big criticisms with SF, and some are valid in my view, but let's not get ridiculous here. TWINE is a C+ at best. SF is in A-/B+ territory.

Yup. I do think Skyfall is overrated and it loses me once it gets back to the UK in the second half, but TWINE is probably in the bottom 5 Bond films. Skyfall is top 10..

How is SF a remake of TWINE exactly? Because the villain has a history with M? Is that it? :-? :-??

Mi6 gets bombed, there is a chase through London, and Bond has an injury?

    Also,
    - In both films there is someone very close to M, which turns the tables and becomes the villain;
    - New characters are introduced to the franchise while others say goodbye;
    - Bond's vehicles get destroyed...

But is that a remake anyways? These things could be a part of any other Bond film. Just coincidence, maybe.

I've never ever had the slightest notion that SF was a remake of TWINE (especially since TWINE is a lousy movie). Tonight is the first time I heard any different, and I find it clearly to be nonsense.

But then, I take @Bueno1694's posting to be tongue-in-cheek anyhow.

It's clear that Lewis Gilbert made basically the same film three times, and all three times it was at least decent. That's basically all that happened with plagiarism within thr franchise. And it's okay, by the way.

I'll just say that indeed it is a controversial opinion. I definitely don't see how sf is a remake of twine. Where's Dr christmas Jones when you need her?

I don't see your point here. I dont see it as a remake as well, I was just checking some other elements that could be considered for the so called "remake" of Twine. Things that we could see in any other Bond movie and are just taken out of context. It wasn't an ironic comment at all.
