Jose illustrated the pros and cons from his experience watching the Portugese League, ultimately VAR is going to slow the game down and as technology improves every finite decision will be contested.
The true test will be seeing VAR operating at the World Cup, big tournaments are historically littered with poor referee decisions, and England have been on the wrong side of those decisions a few times.
Yes, but if the technology works fine elsewhere (people following other leagues using VAR might know this), they should learn to use it properly before including it in games.
Really don't mind the game being slowed down if crucial decisions are helped by it. More often than not, you feel like being on the wrong side of decisions, as you mentioned. So be it if it adds a few minutes in total to a game.
True that awful graphic you posted is beyond amature they should have not shown that image.
Actually thought there was something wrong with the TV for a few seconds there!
YES!!
The graphic reminded me of a BBC computer from the 80's, the VAR program must be written in BASIC ;))
I don’t think Spurs got away with much of that against Juventus. Stronger refereeing.
Haha, yes! Looked odd compared to all the graphics you're used to seeing these days!
Didn't see the match, but I am not at all surprised if the refs were better. So many PL matches this season have had controversial refereeing…
The Spurs boss had claimed after his side's draw with Liverpool that football is about attempting to "trick your opponent", with numerous Spurs players - including Dele Alli and Harry Kane - drawing criticism for perceived simulation at Anfield.
That and the fact some of Dele's efforts are such dismal attempts at acting they'd be laughed off stage at a school nativity play.
Plus didn't Harold Kane say that if he "feels contact" then he is right to go down, after all this is football. Sounds rather more like diving than football.
That's slightly different. If an idiot defender has a hack you or a keeper throws himself at your feet you have no obligation not to go down once they touch you.
Diving is throwing yourself to the floor with no contact. If someone actually makes contact then it's up to you if you stay on your feet or go down depending on how best you think it will benefit your team. Lineker in the 1990 QF the perfect example of this of course.
If you don't want to concede a penalty then don't make challenges in the box without getting the ball.
He really likes to dive, doesn't he.
Kane loves diving as well.
This was a dive.
Spurs seem to be the worst team easily for diving.
Kane's quote was in relation to the Karius incident, that 001 has pictured above. I saw a gif of it, and when you see it looping over and over you can see that there was no contact. He starts to flip has legs and fall as soon as he sees the goalkeepers hand is available.
The fact of the matter is that basically all top teams have at least a handfull of players that happily try to make the most out of any foul or attempted foul they receive. And that is not Even mentioning all the attempts at either interupting, riveling up or injuring other players with fouls or hits, time vasting, putting pressure on the referee etc... Blaming others; teams, nations, cultures for being so incredibly much worse than others, is usually an attempt at self contentment. The English especially are masters at this. I guess finally realizing you have no claims to be considered the best in the game you created, has brought on the need to at least point out you understand the values of the game much better!
- 'In England we at least value fair play! We kick and beat each other to death like real men and are not patzies like those foreigners who drivel around with their fancy "technique" and "skill", while rolling around at every physical contact! We wouldn't try to trick the referee in England! Except all the times we do... repeatedly...'
The real heroes are those who get consistently kicked, yet always try their best to stay up. These players should be championed, instead of vasting time on blaming others for 'dark arts' every team uses!
I'd love to be able to send these cheats back in time to face Norman Hunter or Ron "Chopper" Harris for 90 minutes. They wouldn't be able to roll around after one of those tackles.
Also, are some players just prone to dive, or is it a thing some managers encourage?
That one was really annoying - running across someone who is about to kick the ball.
I'm not going to defend Harry flinging himself to the floor (I think Karius gets a nick on his trailing leg but that is no reason for his leading leg to collapse form under him) but that doesn't alter the fact that his statement is true and if you feel contact then you are entitled to go down and the defender will be sweating on what happens next.
Wigan v City quite a decent ding dong and City down to 10 men evens it up a bit. The ref gets a yellow out at first and then changes it to red did the VAR guy overrule him?
Nonetheless seeing Pep losing his shit quite amusing.
On top of that, the referee appears to have had a yellow card in his hand, but then takes out the red. Guardiola and Cook are seen furious on the sidelines, with heated exchanges going between them.
In England where we 'kick and beat each other to death like real men' it's a yellow but his studs were up a bit and I've seen them given. Don't really see why Pep is going mental. Perhaps it might be because he now might have to actually earn his money for the next 45?
Is there VAR in this game at all? The commentator on TV here said there wasn't.
Shame they went to commercial just as the tunnel cam was on, as things went crazy there! Read somewhere that Ederson appeared to push Cook!
Perhaps! Makes this Monday game a lot more exciting, that's for sure!
I thought all these FA Cup games have VAR? But there again no one has really mentioned it so you might be right.
We got the tunnel footage here and it looked like Pep was basically shouting 'Do you want some? I'm handy' at the Wigan manager. Alas he was held back as I would've liked to see how the urbane, metrosexual tactician with a nice line in designer jumpers would've done in a ruck with a bloke who looks like he eats tripe for breakfast, lunch and dinner and whose idea of speaking a foreign language is to shout 'Oi Gunga Din' to a waiter in an Indian restaurant.
A bit strange to not include VAR in all games, don't you think? The commentator here hasn't talked any more about VAR either.
As a neutral, that would be quite a fight to see. More entertaining than what's going on out on the pitch! Such a clash of style between the two, as you mentioned, haha! :))
I agree it's ludicrous that some matches can have it and some can't. Surely the rules of a competition has to be the same for all teams doesn't it? So one team gets knocked out because the linesman lets an offside goal stand an one goes through because the VAR denies the same offside goal?
Hello!!! Will Grigg's on fire etc....
Let's see what Pep has in his locker now!
Great minds Sir!!!
