Check this website: http://www.007james.com/articles/box_office.php. This website is using the methodology from the website http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/James-Bond, using the most recent Consumer Price Index (Inflation Adjusted) from the US Department of Labor. I especially like this graph ;-):

Nice chart.........just goes to make the argument more confusing.....shame the list uses CPI from 2011 though!

Well i can ensure you that when the admission figures are published in the not to distant future, they should clear up any ambiguity!

Don't really know too much about the Chinese market? Other than i yhink it is now the 2nd biggest in the world for multiplex cinemas i think? So i guess if that's correct? There is alot of potential!

At least $75 million. The market has expanded a lot in the last four years.

Hopefully closer to $90 million, I'd love Skyfall to be in fifth place.

Chinese Censors Clamp Down on 'Skyfall'
Partly set in Shanghai and Macau, the latest James Bond film is released in the country with a scene removed and several lines given alternate translations in the Chinese subtitles.

The changes for China don't seem to drastically alter the film, which is good. Hopefully it will play well there

I think they are drastical, very drastical. 'Skyfall's political theme is all about espionage and the dirtyness of it. I thought the scenes were Ola Rapace shoots the guard was quite strong and effective. It shows you how utterly crazy this henchman was.

Then the scene about Severine being part of sex trade. This scene was SO powerful, how Bond literally explained the truth about her and her past. Frightening, and reminiscent of Vesper's double agenda. Also, Severine didn't seem the type to be part of the mob.

Silva's background story is what makes his revenge so much more valid. The handover story sounded credible, and IMO it was Silva's own stupid fault to hack the Chinese in 1997. Why didn't the Chinese censors pick on that?

I actually think that 'Skyfall' could have premiered earlier if the Chinese censors were not re-editing the movie to quite an extend. Largest censorship changes ever for a Bond film if you ask me....

You have got to be kidding me:

They are censoring moments absolutely crucial to the plot, including Silva's entire motivation for wanting to kill M. [-(

We're getting close to the 7 millions mark in France. 47 910 viewers more for a total of 6 954 203 tickets sold in 12 weeks.

Thanks to censors the Chinese might as well not see the bloody film, considering the entire motivation for the plot is taken out.

I always said, don't expect too much from China. I see it in the 40 mill range.

But i assume, they will have given them some sort of motivation to back up the plot.

I at least expect an amount close to $100 Million. I can't seem to understand why for China the expectations are so low. It doesn't necessarily mean that whole families in China are watching the illegal DVD's of 'Skyfall' in favour of the theatrical release upcoming Monday.

Just like in other countries, a cinema visit is still considered a nice night out, with our without family and friends. And especially the biggest cinema's in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai are absolutely enormous, mostly brand-new and even way more comfortable then some cinemas in the west. Also IMAX is very popular there. So does anyone have some figures what percentage of cinemas will showing 'Skyfall' in IMAX?

One last thing, 'Skyfall' has almost no competition until 'The Hobbit' will be released on February 21st. In between only 'Cloud Atlas' (January 31st) and 'Jack reacher' (February 16th) will premiere.

And most importantly, 'Skyfall' will see a nice bump from the Chinese New Years holidays. It's celebrated on February 10th, but also the days, weekends before and after. It is as big as our Christmas/Thanksgiving holidays. Kids are usually off for almost the entire month of February including some days end of January depending on the regions in China. And then there are the official Bank Holidays which last from February 9th till February 15th.

So a perfect moment to visit a James Bond film if you ask me. I expect at leastttt more than $90 Million and an amount of $120 Million looks like an even nicer prediction. 'Skyfall' will do something similar that 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' did when it premiered, also close to the Chinese New Year's celebrations if I'm not mistaken..

No, 'Skyfall' will most certainly beat 'The Dark Knight Rises' and it's exciting to see if 'The Hobbit' eventually will beat 'Skyfall' or not on the World Wide Box Office Chart of 2012 :-). I say $ 1.15 Billion ($1,150,000,000) is quite a reasonable prediction for 'Skyfall's final box office figures....

I still think that's way too optimistic. For the many reasons outlined above, combined with the bizarre and drastic censorship that will render the film meaningless, I too expect it not to gross more than about $50m.

Skyfall earning 1 billion dollars worldwide just goes to show you that world audiences don't know a well-crafted film from a hole in the wall.
After Casino Royale being such a masterfully done film, and QoS maintaining the seriousness of Craig's portrayal of Bond, I expected skyfall to be a serious, gritty drama. Especially after hearing Sam Mendes would be directing. American Beauty being one of my favorite films, I expected Mendes to deliver a more eerie suspenseful feel to Skyfall. Sadly what I got was a film Mendes aimed for the audiences of 12 year olds. I do not wish to start a forum war with my opinions, but as being a lifelong Bond fan my whole life, I walked out of skyfall greatly disappointed and wishing I could get my money back. I have lost great respect for Daniel Craig for even accepting such a lousy script of pure laziness and stupidity.

I think, it is so wunderful to see that 'Skyfall' even attracts trolls like you ;-)? It simply shows how big 'Skyfall' is. I don't mind opinions underlined with truthful arguments. Let's see if I can find you more often on this great James Bond forums ;-).

    'Drastical, very drastical' (sic)?

    Hardly.

How does not seeing Patrice shoot the guard affect the plot? Theres a second guard he shoots upstairs that we just see already dead but does that render the story incomprehensible?

Ultimately Severine is a meaningless character; no more important than Patrice who never even speaks. She is just a vehicle for Bond to get another step closer to Silva. We dont need to know Patrice's backstory or the casino chip's so why do we need to know her's? Doesnt affect the plot in the slightest.

Silva's motivation is important in that we like to have a reason why hes doing it but it doesnt affect being able to follow the film if they just make up some up other reason why he hates M that takes out reference to the Chinese. Any reason would do as long as you could deem it sufficient motivation. Of course if they just cut the scene then it would be stupid but it says they just alter the subtitles a bit so we can assume that a reason is given just that China are not blamed for it.

I'm more than happy with these cuts as I expected a lot worse. Thought we would lose the scene with M saying about the handover entirely but if thats just been tweaked then theres not really much been lost at all. The Patrice and Severine stuff is not fundamental to the plot. I would argue Mendes cutting the scene with Severine and Patrice at the airport is far more detrimental in terms of being able to follow what is going on.

I think it's also a personal issue I have with censorship. It is slowly entering today's society. Not only in China, but even among western companies like Google, internet providers, CNN, Heineken and Mercedes. Doing business with the Chinese always means you have to sign extensive contracts with so many clausules that basically give the Chinese a better advantage. One of these clausules is always censorship. For a company like Mercedes and/or Heineken that's not that big an issue, but for other companies in which freedom -free press- is an important factor of success, like Google, Facebook, CNN, telecom- and internet companies, the freedom actually becomes an issue of business ethics.

Slowly the United Nations, under support of Russia and China, are adopting stronger internet censorship plans. And allthough Europe and the USA can still vetoe such a thing, the power of such a vetoe will actually become less of an influence on the long-term. Even in Europe the European Union Secretary of Internet Affairs, Dutch woman Neelie Kroes, is going slowly ahead with legal plans that say that internet providers can limit the actual subscriptions during the subscription period, including blockades of certain sites.

That's not directly censorship, but it shows that even in the western world control over internet is slowly being favoured over 'cable neutrality' in which the internet is an area of complete freedom. Bad, if you ask me :-).

It means that money becomes an more important factor than democratic values like freedom. It means that in the long term certain directors will think twice to not put too much politics in movies, let alone producing blockbusters with critical aspects.

Anyway, that's why I so strongly oppose censorship. But yeah, many people are right if they say the actual censorship at first sight isn't that big. True.

On the short-term I actually think this 'minor' censorship will have no implications on the moneymaking-machine-status of 'Skyfall' in China. On the contrary. We'll see how 'Skyfall' opens this Monday ;-).

It does make it look like Skyfall will gross $75 million plus at least. Also let's not forget it's done better than expected all over the world, why should China be any different?

A final worldwide gross over $1.125 million would make my day.

If we are right @Samuel001...let's say an end result of between $1.125 and $1.150 Billion worldwide....then 'Skyfall' would be the 5th most succesful movie of all time! And when the China figures come in, 'Skyfall' will start rising on this list again. Currently, the worldwide all time gross list looks like this:

    01) $2,782.3 -- 'Avatar' (2009)
    02) $2,185.4 -- 'Titanic' (1998)
    03) $1,511.8 -- 'Marvel's The Avengers' (2012)
    04) $1,328.1 -- 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2' (2011)
    05) $1,123.7 -- 'Transformers: Dark Of The Moon' (2011)
    07) $1,081.0 -- 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012)
    11) $1,033.6 -- 'James Bond - Skyfall' (2012)

By the way, Friday estimates for the US market are in. 'Skyfall' is now at $300,147,000! Congratulations Bond ;-).
  • The 21 Jan midnight screenings in the Wanda IMAX theaters in Beijing are almost sold out, and the one 20:30 screening (in only one cinema) is sold out. The other movies have more screenings (6 per days), they're making it an event for the day of release clearly...

Very happy to see Skyfall inching across that $300 million mark in the United States. James Bond is again a VERY MAJOR player in the US box office. (Don't get me wrong, CR and QOS did well, but they were getting beat by the likes of Bourne, Mission: Impossible and many other similar films.)

And now Bourne and Batman are over. Finished. Period. It becomes a bit easier to keep Bond big :-).
