Gut feeling, instinct? Plus, remember that the Connery Bond of DAF instinctively did exactly the same thing before he was gassed by Blofeld.
That's a great moment. Bond looks so confused as to why Blofeld doesn't just shoot him, then thinks, "Oh, it's the elevator that's killing me, then?" After that, the gas.
Yes, I also really like how they re-use that bit in TSWLM. Perhaps a trace of the hand of Tom Mankiewicz left over in the Maibaum/Wood script? Could be!

He's possibly suspicious why Mathis wouldn't meet with them in person, thinking it may be a trap, and that Mathis could be the person who told Le Chiffre that he knew the tell.
That makes me realise that Craig is the only Bond (besides Lazenby) to have the last spoken line in all of his films.
Thank you for the answer. I seem to recall that's the way it went in the book, however in the film it seems like such a huge dramatic leap seeing as how Mathis wasn't under any suspicion beforehand from Bond.
Bond is just sitting casually at the restaurant relaxing when suddenly intense 'danger' music kicks in and Bond darts out of the hotel to find Vesper being kidnapped. A poorly executed scene in an otherwise flawless film.
@TR007, I think it was just a case of Bond finally thinking things over after Vesper's mention of Mathis sparked something in him. He knew Le Chiffre found out about the tell somehow, but was likely thinking of other ways it would've slipped following his win. His mind goes instantly to Mathis because his heart is blinding him from ever seeing Vesper as the traitor at that moment, and the way the kidnapping is staged, Vesper looks like an innocent victim and not a Quantum operative, meaning Bond will believe the lie that she's being threatened and give over the password.
I can't find anything about Aturif online, and he's not mentioned in any of the Bond film reference books. I'm wondering if that name is a pseudonym for another writer.
Losing him would be too bad: he would be quite an interesting capture for the CIA or the MI6 if they manage to convince him to work for their governments.
If my memory serves me Bond tosses him off the yacht with a flotation device, so as long as he stayed away from shark infested areas I think he could've made it back to shore without trouble.
In my, er, "headcanon" (I don't know if we use this expression here), he actually manages to survive, defects to the West (more for personal gain than political issues) and gives some important intel about SPECTRE. And after several years he gets his coveted (and ironic, of course) Nobel Prize for his studies on thermonuclear energy.
I dig it.
