After a recent viewing of The Living Daylights, I'm still a little confused about the escape plan during the Koskov defection scene. Saunders was in charge of the operation and had every detail planned out but Bond had another escape route set up ahead of time. Did M know about Bond's plan? It would seem so since Q was also involved. If M did not know about it then how could he have been so dumb to go along with Saunders' idea of hiding him in the trunk? The movie seems to insinuate that everyone knew what was going on except Saunders. Why keep him in the dark?

Perhaps they did not fully trust saunders or his associations.

In reality I think it was just a sudden twist meant for us, the audience.
  • Since we're on the subject of TLD, the scene when Bond checks into his hotel in Vienna and tell Kara that they're going to buy that obscenely expensive dress she asks him who will pay and he responds "Georgi" always confused me a bit. Did Bond have Koskov's credit card information or something? Did he charge it to MI6? That couldn't have made M very happy. I doubt Bond payed for it out of his own pocket. Can someone elaborate?

MGM paid for it, but he could not say that onscreen.

We all know that but let's keep that between us.

But seriously, does anyone have any ideas?

During mos of the movie, Bond told Kara that he was there on behalf of Georgi. That was just part of his cover story, to convince her that Georgi was the man who sent him to her. At least, that's how I interpret this.

I know that much. My question was how did Bond pay for the dress. If memory serves me correctly it's price tag was well into the thousands. I know Bond wanted to bed Kara but not that much. Haha

The over-burdened British taxpayers footed the bill for that dress.

Expensed to MI6. I assume that M begrudgingly accepts that Bond likely spends tons, if he feels he has to, to accomplish missions. Telling Kara that Georgi will pay for it solidifies the cover that he's there on behalf of him, as @Gerard said.
Expensive food, however, I feel he probably pays for himself while on missions.

Haha jeez I guess Bond constantly saving the world comes with a steep price for the "over-burdened British taxpayer". It's not enough Bond set himself up in a 5 star hotel but he also buys a 5 figure dress (in 1987 currency mind you) and tags that onto the bill despite the fact that it really wasn't necessary to begin with at all. No wonder M is always so grumpy with Bond. He blows more government money than Barack Obama.

No kidding! The way I see it, what Bond spends during his missions falls into two categories; money spent to complete the mission (expensed to MI6), and money spent to satisfy Bond's personal desires (personal funds, which he doesn't mind spending essentially all of, because he feels as though he could die any day). Things like the 5 star hotel, with regards to what I've mentioned here, could sort of go either way.
Of course I could be totally wrong, and anything/everything on firm time is expensed to MI6 and the aforementioned heavily-burdened taxpayer.

I'm assuming it's all MI6, as 5 star hotels and four figure bottles of champagne are a tough nut to crack on a civil servant's salary.

Bond certainly does make the best of it. And it's not like being portrayed as wealthy was at all essential to his cover in TLD. He could've just as easily checked into a Days Motel and Kara would've never been the wiser. Especially considering how she's dumb enough to not question Bond's car firing rockets from its headlights.

The double o section is not official. The budget for their operations are probably taken from the income MI6 has from drug smuggling, arms dealing, illegal gambling, prostitution etc.

Also in the novel Moonraker, Bond gets to keep his winnings from Drax at Blades, which would set him up for several lifetimes, I have to imagine? Either way Bond is definitely not just working off his employment income.

Is it true all Bond actors (potential or otherwise) go through the same screen test, meeting Tatiana Romanova? Does this mean there's footage of Daniel Craig performing this scene out there somewhere?

Most have done the scene from FRWL, but I read somewhere that Daniel did a scene from OHMSS (in the barn, if I remember correctly).

Oh man, would love to see it.
  • What was the first Bond movie to be shown in Russia?
I just read that it was banned in the USSR and you could even go to jail if you smuggled Bond movies in...
Many went to jail for their crime, which was deemed to be “the propagation of pornography”

Goldeneye was the first to be shown publicly, but the leaders watched them from the beginning.
  • Thanks @Thunderfinger ! Any sources for that? I believe you, but I need it for my dissertation...

I have no source other than my memory. It was reported in the papers in 1995. Have you searched the internet?

I think it might've actually been TMWTGG. I'm just going off of memory from what I heard in the dvd special features and even that was a while ago.

  • Yes, same here @Thunderfinger :)
@DoubleOhhSeven: I think I've heard something similar, but if I remember correctly it was only shown in the Kremlin...? (Someone said something like that) But I really don't know

I think you are right, @mirandafrost. I have seen that dvdspecial too but it has been a while.
  • Hi guys,
some time ago I had a question:
[...]are there any interviews or statements from the earlier movies/Cold War movies why they changed the storyline or the origin of the villains? [...] Was there an intention of the producers/directors/screenwriters?
    [...]
I'd be interested as to who took the decision though. Was it Cubby and Harry on there own? Did the studio bring pressure to bear? Or one day did a guy from MI6/the CIA show up at their offices and say 'we'd really rather you didn't have the Russians as the baddies in this'? [...]
I just wanted to inform you (because we didn't find a real answer) that I found it after a lot of research! :)
“The attempt to relocate James Bond politically or, indeed, in some crucial ways to 'depoliticise' him altogether had been a concern to Broccoli and Saltzman from the outset. Cubby Broccoli has said that the Bond films are 'not political' but 'good old fashioned entertainment'. What Broccoli appears to mean by this is that, during periods of détente, he has made efforts to tone down and, in some cases, to eradicate Bond's overt anti-Soviet views. The Spy represents the most extreme version of this strategy.” ()
Cubby saw the movies as entertainment and didn't want them to be too political... He also said:
They [the audience] “flock into the theaters to see him because they don't have to stop and think.”
    Greetings, Miranda :)

@DarthDimi Will you please delete the Lotus thread for me then, as well as another thread in my discussions marked "deleted"?

    Thank you!
